Why? Is it even viable to not use any elite spec?

So I've return to the game after a long time. I jump back in on my Guardian after a bit of refresher on an alt, and I'm very confused. How are these elite specs in any way thematic to Guardians (effectively Paladins)? I didn't make a Guardian to be a bow user with traps. I didn't make a Guardian to be a full caster that can't use my Greatsword whenever I use a Virtue. I haven't even tried Willbender yet, but from what I've read it's nothing to celebrate, and a dual wielder at that? Huh? I just don't understand how any of these fit into the class, and it seems like you must pick one elite spec in the end. I hope the other classes don't have such cognitive dissonance with their elite specs.
