Why are tier 3 and 4 trophies so expensive?

Something I noticed while trying to level up my crafting. Looking at the trading post, it seems that tier 1,2 and 5 trophies (and to a lesser extent, other materials) are cheap, but tier 3, 4, and 6 are an order of magnitude higher. I get tier 6, but why tier 3 and 4? I assume there's something that requires massive amounts of them that a lot of people want, but I'm not seeing what that is.

Honestly curious. Thanks!

Gen 2 legendary items use them in mystic tribute , which includes both rings and both accessories. There's also every legendary armor , rune, and sigil that requires condensed might and magic which also use those materials.

It might also be because a lot of higher level crafting needs some mid-tier materials, but they generally only drop at the appropriate level, so players have a relatively short period when the majority of their trophy drops are tier 3 and 4 and a long period when they need to use them. (There are ways to get them later on, but it's not as frequent.)

One work-around is to use laurels to buy them. Laurel merchants sell bags of trophies at each tier and they all cost 1 laurel each (and give 3-5 trophies of that tier) so it's the same price to buy whichever tier of materials you need.

It can also be a good way to get extra gold since you'll get laurels regularly just for logging in and they have a limited number of uses, buying materials to sell is an easy way to convert laurels into some 'free' gold.

Nearly everyone has one or more level-80 characters and, understandably, spend the bulk of their time in level-80 zones getting level-80 loot. Even when they happen to play in lower-level area, part of the loot they get is still level 80.

For the reasons expounded above, that causes a disparity between supply and demand, driving the prices up.
