What worked for me was renaming: 
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Guild Wars 2

and 

C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Temp\gw2cache-

 

basicly it removes and rebuilds old cache and settings.

I'm having the same issue.  After the update, loading the game locks my computer.  I can't even close the client using Task window.  Only thing that gets me back up is shutting down the computer and restarting.

I tried turning off Game mode and still get the stuck only reboot or log off gets my PC back. Does anyone know a way to edit a file or change settings to get out of full window mode?

One more to submit their name to the roll of the damned. I managed to log in just after the update, then logged off to deal with something and when I tried to return, I was having the same issues as those mentioned above.

This worked for me on the second try.

Meaning: Turn game mode off, start the game (it will freeze again), Ctrl+Shift+Esc, use keyboard to close game from task manager, open the game again. Sucess! (at least for me)

Patch completely froze the charscreen and crashed the game twice already, very good change.

Yeah, I can't log in at all, the .exe crashed each time I enter the character select screen.

Same issue, I hear the music, but game is invisible.

Deactivating Windows 10 Game Mode worked for me, thanks for the tip. Though I would prefer to keep it on.

Same issue: Logged in fine, got into a map. Then realized I have dx11 and arcdps on.
Turned off dx11, exit game, deleted the 2 arcdps files.

Now starting gw2: Music plays and nothing else happens. The game monitor is also "frozen" - as in Gw2 is blocking the use of mouse on my main monitor.

The game loads and the windows 10 home screen freezes. alt + ctrl + delete to access task manager to force close the application does not work. The game client is stuck at loading enternally. Forcing to force restart the computer.

3 restarts and 4 attempts later, game just works. Did nothing different.

same issue but if you press ctrl shift escape use arrows to go down to guild wars 2 then click delete on keyboard that seems to work so don't have to keep restarting pc

This happens to me periodically (every few months) -- the solution I've used (including today) is to create a shortcut to the GW2 launcher, and append "/clientport 80" under the shortcut's target directory.

 

To do that, you can right-click the GW2 launcher icon --> select "Create Shortcut".  (I typically rename that to GW2 Port 80 and drag that to my desktop)

 

Right-click the shortcut and select --> Properties.  Under the Shortcut tab Target field, you'll see your local directory path.  Append /clientport 80 (note the forward slash) so it reads:

"[Directory]\Gw2.64.exe" /clientport 80

I couldn't tell you exactly why it works, what issue it solves, or even where I originally came across the solution!  But hopefully it might help someone get back in.
