Stupid question about requirements for elite specializations

Hi i'm a bit confused but even more unsure, so i wanted to ask here and see if someone could give me some clarification.

I've been leveling some other chars and went into regions i've never been before. One of those was Iron Marches. While running around i saw more than one necromancer who apparently used sand shades, from the scourge elite specialization.

The thing is that he had the symbol, aka the green arrow down to lv57 at the moment, that he got scaled down for the area.

From my understanding you need to be LV80 and must have trained all other skills and specializations before you can even start to trains those elite ones no? Even if you avoid all masteries by using a instant lv80 boost, don't all 80's get the mastery symbol with a 0 besides their name  right away? Or do you get the mastery symbol + 0 besides your name only once you hit 80 and active select a mastery to start training?

Hope it makes kinda sense what i'm trying to understand here. In short: Can you have a elite spec without running around with mastery symbol at all?

Thanks in advance

Prob boosted to 80, unlocked basic unmastered scourge and has zero mastery points.  Going to say prob afk farming being 80 with no mastery is very weird to see as most get raptor at least asap or basic glider.  Necros are the worst for piling up and afk killing and hope they get banned.

Exactly. You need to learn all skills and trait-lines (= specializations) of the core-profession. If you are level 80 and this is the case, you can learn the Elite Specializations. Only if one of your characters walked into the related expansion maps. Heart of Thorns for the Reaper (greatsword) and Path of Fire for the Scourge (sand shades).

As far as I remember, there is no yellow/golden 0. At least I have never seen one yet. As long as you have not leveled at least one mastery, you will still see the level + the donwscale-arrow if the character is in a low-level area.

Even if the mastery-exp bar is full, nothing will change until you put mastery-points in to activate it. Some new players make this mistake more frequently. They pick a mastery, level it, but forget to slot Mastery Points in it to activate it. They keep falling to death, wondering why the glider does not open :S.

That is the greatest difficulty with the Mastery system. Understanding that you have to accept points getting used, once the exp-bar is full.

If your account has a mastery-level, even if it is 1, this no longer works. Every other character that hits level 80 instantly, get the golden mastery numbers. Level only shows 1-79.

Alright fair enough.

I have a 2nd account with a boosted character plus raptor, and he has the mastery symbol with a 0. I just asked somebody if he sees a green arrow + number or golden symbol with number to make sure it is not just my display (wich it seems to be the case). Apparently he didn't even saw a green arrow., than again i asked in a starter area. Maybe he didn't knew what i asked for since i should at least have the downscale arror besides my name.

Whatever. First i was just curios if it is possible to get elite spec and avoiding any master point. Than i thought you get at least the display+0 as soon as you hit 80 and got the expansions, since that becomes your "new" exp bar after reaching cap. But from what i gathered now it really doesn't display any mastery rating if you haven't spend at least 1 point.

Thanks again for getting things straight.

You only need 30 HPs to unlock the basic subclass, which is easily doable in Central Tyria. Boosting to lv80 automatically gives you all the HPs you need for the Core specialisations.

Also, players who only ever played WvW won't have PvE Masteries and can instantly buy the full subclass with the Proof/Testinmony of Heroics. This is because WvW Masteries are a completely separate thing. You see this alot on alt accounts that were F2P for WvW but became paid accounts later.
