Error code 80010 - Can't redeem gem code purchase from Best Buy

Recommended Posts

I am trying to redeem a gem card digital purchase from Best Buy and getting this error code. I've been trying to buy gems now for about a week. I've read through the 80808 thread but was not able to find a topic on this code. I hope this is just a fixable error. I've already spent the money. Please help.

For what it's worth I am having a similar problem.  I cannot buy any gems online at Amazon since Christmas.  I suspect that GW2 management hasn't addressed the whole problem of buying Gems they Gem cards just yet.  For now the best we can do is make as much noise as we can until GW2 management responds.

That's very unfortunate. Sorry to hear others are having this issue. I would think this kind of issue would be resolved quickly as it means loss of revenue.

If this fails, open a support ticket. If that fails, contact the point of purchase.

Thanks for the link, but I've been buying gems and playing this game since launch and never had this issue. I see I'm not the only one. I hope it gets fixed but in the meantime, I guess I'm out $25.

Buying Gems in-game, buying physical Gem Cards from Best Buy, or buying digital Gem Cards from Best Buy?  They each have a separate way of redeeming.  I had no issue redeeming a digital Best Buy Gem Card.

Do contact the CS Team via the 'Support' link above/below.

Also, the other poster that responded referred to a different issue, entirely.

Thanks to all who commented and those of you who offered assistance. I didn't contact support as I wanted to try and give it some time to see if the matter would clear up. I tried the code again and it worked this time. It just took a while. The only reason why I bought a card is because I'm a victim of the dreaded 80808 error. I contacted support about that, but I'm still waiting for a response. I guess for now, I'll buy way less gems and stick to cards.

Just Recieved this error for the first time and, considering how much I value the smallest amount of money i get to spend, this was heartbreaking 😞
I've contacted the support for the site I got the key from and will file a ticket here as well.

Did you put the code in the 'Redeem Item Code' field, and not the 'Redeem Code' field?

I just went round and round with both Amazon and GW support and if you are a Steam player, their answer was, "we can't do anything, thanks for the money."
Theft and Fraud.
Neither their gem listings on Amazon nor their game cards indicate that Steam users are inelligible.

Until this gets sorted, this is technically fraud, followed by theft.

CS was unwilling to take my code to burn it and credit me with gems for my Steam version.
Amazon was incapable of giving me a refund and told me to contact the developer.
GW CS told me to contact Amazon.
Shameful. They stole my money.

It's listed in the Q/A section that the cards don't work with Steam on Amazon.  It should be more prominent, but it always helps to read all the fine print.

And:  This product is non-returnable and non-refundable.

Also, since launch (or even before) the Steam FAQ states that Gem Cards do not work with Steam Accounts:

Can I add gem codes to my Guild Wars 2 Steam account?

No, gem card codes cannot be redeemed in-game (or on the site) for Guild Wars 2 accounts that were created on Steam. If this changes, the information will be updated here.

Again, researching new features that involve cash expenditures is always prudent.  (Save the card for when/if the Steam Gem Card practice changes.)

As a new player who has not been inundated by FAQs and leveraging that pretty much every game that sells in game currency ubiquitously, no, the fact that this information appears zero places in the purchase flow nor at game outlets needs fixed.

It's a backend limitation and the burden of knowing this is not on the consumer.  Unless a differentiation between "Guild Wars 2" and "Guild wars 2 Steam edition" surfaces as part of any purchase flow, this is confusing and unintentionally illegal as it perpetrates false advertising.
A single sentence in the product listing on Amazon would alleviate this.

It's there in the normal purchase flow when you try to purchase gems in-game.  It shows it uses the Steam Wallet as the only purchase option and they also don't let you redeem codes at all in-game.  Instead you have to go to the website where it links to the help information.

Maybe you could find someone with a normal GW2 account who could trade you the code on your card for Steam Funds.
