does focused magic only work with gliding in a certain area or will it work everywhere once you get it?

It will only work in Bloodstone Fen. The same is true of all the gliding skills unlocked in that map, it's only the ones in the gliding mastery track which work everywhere.

They really do need to let some of these masteries work in other zones. SO many masteries are limited to 1 or 2 maps when it takes a lot of exp to even get them.

It has trained me to eye every new mastery and gauge whether it will be obsolete in future content. I don't expect this is an intended result on the part of the developers.

The answer, it seems to me, is to make sure there are ways to use past masteries in future zones that are unnecessary but profitable. No player should feel they have to go back and get previous masteries in order to participate in the story or the meta for a zone, but they should feel like it'd be rewarding if they did.

If ANet could find that delicate balance, the game would be stronger for it.

I did go back for Oakheart's Reach when I started Dragonfall.  Granted, I was most of the way toward that mastery already.
