I used to play Eve Online where something similar happened to me.

The menu list used to be colour tinted, so I easily located the icon I needed by navigating to the colour, rather than the symbol. The Eve developers read a psyche report somewhere that said monotone icons are more easily interpreted so they changed all the icons to white on black. After that I found it really hard to locate the menu function I wanted because all the icons were, more or less to my eyes, pretty much the same. I found it much easier to locate a colour than a B&W icon.

So in summary, I understand the OPs issue. I also have trouble with discerning the 27 different espec icons in GW2.

Bear in mind that I am sight impaired so blurry icons are hard to read if they are all the same colour. Different colours (or tints) would make it so much easier.
