TheQuickFox.3826
https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Orb_of_Power I never knew this one existed. While I played the beta and early game, I only did some story and PvE exploration. By the time I entered WvW, the mechanic was long gone.

People QQ'd about PvE elements in their competitive game mode and got it removed. I disagree with it, as it is a War mode, not a structured PvP mode, but eh. If it interferes with the fight guilds being able to fight on open ground then it gets deleted. 1

I always liked hybrid PvE/PvP game types. My favourite mission of Guild Wars 1 was Fort Aspenwood. Where you're as valuable to your team when mining amber and repairing gates as killing Siege Turtle NPCs as killing incoming players. (Or vice versa if you play the offending Luxon side) My favourite sPvP game type in GW2 is stronghold for the same reason. One of my best memories of WvW was defending StoneMist Castle through the night with just a few players of the night crew against outnumbered forces. Making good use of the defensive sieges and keeping the supplies coming in for repairs.

Actually, the QQ was the fly hacks that were utilized to effectively control this. It has been said that Anet didn’t have an effective way to combat it, so they removed the element. 2

What exactly was the pve elements? It was removed because of fly hacking, it was later returned as bloodlust in the ruins.

Dawdler.8521
Anet said they where going to bring orbs back and left the stairs at NC for a long time. Then after a few years... they secretly remade the map to remove the evidence. It aint ever coming back. Replaced by bloodlust.

It reminds me of the same fun i had as a kid on games like Medal of Honour and the movie-game LOTR tie ins, where you could go out of your way to save all the little NPC allies, and then they'd sort-of "join" you on the final push. It's not really a thing i've found much in games. I think WoW had a bit of a PvE/PvP cross map -- Arathi Basin i think? -- and Conquest and WvW are alright, but it's an itch that's hard to scratch. I never get the complaints about WvW's PvE. That mixture is what makes it interesting. Desert BL suffers a bit from the complex HoT map design, but once you get your head around it it's a well set up map. The shrines on that map are pretty niche in terms of what they offer, and they're so easy to lose, but when it comes into play it's so much fun. Air keep's Warrior-like "death from a above", and the x3 shrine relatively quick map crossing. Fighting a lord that doesn't just stand still (like pre-HoT enemies), but can actually tie up or down someone, with stuff you actually have to dodge. Shrines flip so much it's bothersome to look every time if you have whatever buffs from them, rather just take the usual ways unless the flip portals are up. Air lord can be cheesed by pulling to one side of the platform. Earth lord is an idiot locking out their allies from their inner ring, and while you might say but yes it locks the enemies in too! you actually have to be ready to range bomb that area to have that advantage otherwise it's a disadvantage. Fire lord can be annoying fearing into lava, so don't fight on that side of the platform. Not exactly intense game play there. WoW pve/pvp maps were Alterac valley and Isle of conquest, where you had to fight to the enemy lords to kill to win the match, which eventually turned into a joke in which it was a speed run if either side ignored each other, and could win in 7mins. But that was just one winning condition, the other is to just kill players till they run out of reinforcement count, which could turn the match into a 45 min chokehold slugfest. First version of AV actually had matches lasting for days at a time, where you could summon various npcs to help fight. Still my favorite battleground in any game to this day.... wvw still better though...
