How to farm gold to unlock LW2 w/o getting bored? Help, please

Recommended Posts

Title says it all. I am a level 15 norn with PoF and HoT. What should I do to have as much gold as I can while I get to 80 so I don't have to farm that much to buy LW2? I have been told that with the gold obtained in HoT I won't have issues buying LW3, so that's not an issue. So yes, what do I have to do? I don't want to spend 25h farming and have NO WAY of spending money in-game.

This question is interesting, because a point i read a lot, when people ask about the lw-model Was, that you have mostly enough Gold to buy the next Story when you get there. Of course you can not buy anything else, but no one Was talking about farming, just normal leveling and story play.

I also really want to know how this would work :).

I'm guessing that maybe you want to do your storyline in a step by step manner? If yes, things can get very tricky. If no, I'd say you focus on getting to level 80 first, then start the PoF story to unlock your mounts. You only need to complete the story instance that gives you a raptor mount and leave it at there until your story catch up. Do that and then run around the desert collecting mastery points, then unlock your springer. You are not farming when you do this, but it will, ultimately, boost your efficiency farming gold in the future.

To keep you from getting bored, you have to either repeat something you like many times, or do all kind of things. But to do many different content you first have to unlock it. So, repeating something many times is kind of, inevitable.

If you have a real life job, things can be much more easier. You farm money in real life, and spend it to buy some gems. This costs much less time than farming gold in game.

At lower levels the best things you can do to make gold are:
1) Avoid spending money on things you don't need, which is most things. Salvage kits and the occasional waypoint are probably the only things you need to buy regularly.
2) Don't sell spare equipment to NPC merchants. Sell it on the Trading Post (where you'll get a better price) and if you can't do that salvage it and put the materials into storage (use the deposit button at the top of the inventory window). You'll either find a use for the materials and having them already will save you buying them or you'll be able to sell them later on when you need the money.

You could also do the daily meta-achievement (for completing 3 other daily achievements) which gives 2g per day, but I recommend only doing that if it's not too much trouble or you have a lot of time to play because some are more time consuming than others and it can be easy to get into the habit of doing them every day and then find you don't have much time for anything else.

If you're following the story you won't need Season 2 as soon as you get to level 80 because the personal story continues past that point, so you'll have time to save up gold while more effective methods are available to you.

Also if you're going to be converting gold to gems I recommend keeping an eye on the exchange rate. It changes regularly based on how many people are converting gold into gems and gems into gold so you can get a lot more gems for the same amount of gold if you time it right. I recommend watching the price over time and converting whatever amount you can afford when the price is lower.

To give you the honest truth, what you want to do is technically possible but you will have to dedicate many, MANY hours of farming to it.

The easiest and most accessible farm upon hitting 80 would be checking the group finder for Silverwastes and joining groups advertised as RIBA. You don't need to know anything or have optimized gear. Just unlock the basic raptor mount so you can keep up with people then follow the swarm and get in hits as they mow down enemies.

Once the final event concludes in Silverwastes (you will kill three bosses at the western edge of the map) you will likely see people talking about chests and shovels in the map chat. You can buy buy keys for these chests from the vendor located at the base camp who sells them for bandit crests, the map's special currency. You get the currency (as well as sometimes shovels) from running around with the swarm and completing events.

Once the boss of the map dies you will see players starting to run around in a different pattern and hitting the ground. They are digging for chests. Just follow them along and use your keys to open these chests. Common courtesy is that everyone pitches in and uses their shovels at the spots marked by the group leader but as a new player you won't have many shovels yet so don't worry about it for the time being. By the time you get used to the routine you'll have a lot more and will know when and where to use them.

The Silverwastes farm is an old and reliable gold maker as it always draws a decent crowd (since free to play players can access it) and requires little to no preparation or organisation on behalf of anyone but the raid leader and a few helpers who can explain boss mechanics and the farming route in map chat. Certain farms pay somewhat better but they need you to progress through the expansions and get a good set of gear as well as a good build with preferably multiple crowd control skills.

Fractals, which are end-game dungeons, can be a good money maker but it doesn't net you those big 20-30 gold per day profits until you have been running them over and over enough times to get enough agony infusion to withstand the fractal damage from higher difficulties where the real money making happens. Without sufficient infusion those higher difficulties will kill you very quickly with no counter-play as the increasing fractal damage is an unavoidable mechanic only countered by resistance.

To make use of agony infusions you also need special "ascended" quality gear that you can slot the infusions into. You can get ascended necklace, rings, earrings, and accessories with laurels but they come mostly as login rewards so you will have to wait for a while to get enough of those together. You also can get them from living story maps but you don't have those yet. You also need the right build and a minimum of exotic armour so you'll need to shell out some gold there. A consistent group to do fractal with is also highly recommended to get a good income because otherwise a lot of your time will be spent trying to join random groups and sometimes wiping with them repeatedly due to lack of organization.

In conclusion, for a new player who doesn't want to rush through expansions but wants to farm gold I would stick to Silverwastes as the most consistent and readily available farm. Be warned however that you do have to put in a lot of hours to farm enough gold to buy all the living story episodes. When you look at how much real life value your gold converts to (through gold to gem conversion) you'll realize that farming money in this game, and most games for that matter, equates to working for significantly less than minimum wage even if we account for nations with weaker currencies.

I can't believe I forgot to mention this before but you can also sell some of your login rewards for some easy gold.

Mystic Coins can be sold directly on the Trading Post. They're used to make legendary weapons and some items with unique skins, and for a few other things but it's all optional high-end stuff and if you're focusing on completing the story you won't be doing any of that yet, so you won't need the coins.

The crafting materials from the Bags of Crafting materials can also be sold, but as with materials salvaged from equipment it's probably better to keep them for now and only sell them when you know what you'll need (and won't need) for crafting yourself.

Laurels can be used to buy bags of crafting materials which can then be sold for gold. However laurels are also the easiest way to get ascended (top tier) rings, accessories and amulets (especially if you don't yet have access to living world season 3 and 4 maps) as well as some other useful stuff and some fun cosmetics so you might want to prioritise getting those first, or at least don't sell all your laurels.

Login rewards are on a 28 day cycle (the rewards are the same every month) so if you can it's worth logging in quickly even on days you're not going to actually play just to pick them up. But don't worry if you miss a day, the next time you log in you'll continue from where you left off, it won't reset until you've got all 28 items.

At the current prices you can get approximately 24g a month from Mystic Coins and 17.5g from Laurels, so if you're able to log in every day you could get 97.5g every 28 days from login rewards and daily achievements and it would take approximately 4 months to afford the Season 2 complete pack. However you'll also get gold from other sources in that time and the prices are all subject to change over time (especially since an expansion has just come out so everything is in flux right now).

Something that came to my mind is that I would suggest using the gold for LW3 instead of LW2. The reason for that is that LW2 is mostly cutscenes, dialogues, exposition, and general lore dump in preparation for the story of HoT. Its gameplay value isn't very high (you'll get no replay out of it if you don't want to gun for the grindier or more finicky achievements) and it barely has any rewards. You honestly wouldn't miss a single thing if you just watched a video of it. If you have any friends in the game who own LW2 they can invite you to their living story instances so you get to experience it first-hand but don't unlock achievements and whatever minimal rewards there are.

LW3 however is more than worth it because it gives not only story but fantastic rewards (such as easily grindable ascended trinkets and stat combinations unavailable elsewhere) and a lot of replay value as the maps are fun to run around in even now and you can even use some of them to farm gold (such as the Lake Doric leather farm) when you get bored of Silverwastes and want to switch to something else for a change. LW3 is also needed to unlock the beetle and dragon mounts which are both incredibly useful and fun to play with.

I'm not saying LW2 is bad because I enjoyed the lore dump but if you're someone on a tight budget and in a position of needing to use only gold to purchase living story then LW3 gives far, far more for your heard-earned currency than LW2 does, as well as unlocks the option for additional farms and two new mounts.
