Give it to me straight, should I buy EoD or skip? [Merged]

Recommended Posts

Well, depends on your situation and preferences. To me the price I paid is not that much money, especially considering the amount of content the expansion (and future LW seasons will) add. At least for me it'll bring many hundreds of hours worth of entertainment.

It's honestly debatable right now. Some people are having a great time. Others not so much. I'd say it would be worth it for sure if it went on sale, but maybe a little iffy at full price depending on what content you like.

I'm assuming PvP is unchanged, meta is probably some form of Necro/Rev still just like the past 3 years and WvW is probably on maintenance mode as usual.

I kinda liked the S4/PoF story, does this story even come close to that?

I saw the bots/turtle mount too but Skyscale is still gonna be top prio so idk if any of the EoD mechanics seem useful to me outside of a one time run through.

I rarely do PvP, so I can't speak on that,  but most of the new elite specs are lackluster so probably not much changed. I've heard Machinst heal spec is really good for raids/strikes.

The bot is mostly situational utility.

The story is not as good as PoF, but it has some good moments. It felt a little shorter than I expected though.

The turtle mount is fun,  but not really useful outside a couple maps where seige damage specifically is needed. It's also a pain to get.

The biggest gripe you will see in any of these posts is about a mount that can only be obtained by beating the final series of Events in Dragon's End. This event as per ANET is considered to be epic and hence the difficulty is a tad higher than others and hence requires a bit of preparation for most groups to get through. Ironically in my humble opinion the mount is subpar. Other than it looking a bit interesting I really don't see the huge commotion over it.

I enjoyed the storyline however you will find mixed opinions on that given the scripts used by the characters. Some may enjoy it others might not. The environment is much better than the earlier expansions. Although Kaifeng City looks like it was made big just for the sake of it. You might find traversing maps like Echovald and Kaifeng a bit hard to traverse. Especially if you don't have earlier mounts. I would highly advise not starting the game from his expansion using the booster.

You get access to the news class specialisations obviously and other mechanics like Fishing and the Skiff and the Jade Bot. The new Strike Missions I did all four of them and thought they were much better than the previous ones.

There are things I would like to see improved and would definitely like to see a lot of the bugs cleared out .

My opinion is if you have done the content that was available earlier then sure get it . But if you are just starting out Id work my way up and then get it.

This is just my opinion of course.

Skip

EoD is the expansion which if you don't buy it you won't miss any QoL things, like mounts or gliders.

RN EoD fishing, skiffs, are both just for achievement and mats, jade bot is glorified revive orb, seige turtle is meh. Story not great. Maps are ok. Music is great.

Maybe in future If they say some great drops in metas, you can buy it for that.

Oh and forget about leg 3, worst time gated thing. Gen 3 is for whales (players who put a lot of money in game), every mats can be bought easily from TP.

Anyone who says it's the best expansion is either a blind fan or never really played the other expans.

Buying or skipping is very much a personal preference kind of thing, but I'm telling my friends to wait for EoD to go on sale if they don't see anything that looks interesting to them in the promo material. As it stands right now, you don't really miss out on anything significant by not buying, and while there are a number of promising foundations in EoD's new systems, I feel they all need more development time as a good deal of them are significantly broken and in need of repairs/improvements.

If you play for the story: Don't bother. It's rushed as hell. Character development basically either nonexistant, or the game basically tells you how to feel without putting in the work to achieve a payoff by preparing a proper setup. This issue extends from character development of singe character to the whole plot itself.

Gameplay wise, it's kinda fun, but feel a little lacking in terms of content. But thats highly subjective, since I find the map highly hit or miss.

And the final meta... well you probably heard about the controvers by now. It sucks. And the one thing I always praised Anet for, being good encounter design, has gone down the drain imho.

I'd say skip/wait. I did regret the time I spend playing this expac. Would have been time I could have invested in playing even more Elden Ring.

Tbh, there are things I DO really like here and there, but overall, I’m entirely disappointed.
I wish I hadn’t preordered, I wish I hadn’t bought the deluxe pack.
This experience has made me decide I’ll never preorder again.

(I don’t even mean the meta from hell that the neckbeards are all ‘it needs to stay hardu!’ whilst they never return to it.)

It’s actually to the point for me that I am literally reconsidering gaming anymore full stop, and I played Archeage and was on leaderboards kitten. (I mention this because of the absolute horror gear grind used to be, and I stuck with it anyway)

Buy:
Especs are fantastic
Maps beautiful
Story great
Events are pretty challanging, but there are even a easy ones
Strikes are great

Fishing and skiffing is suprisingly fun!

Jade bots are nice addition and you can grind addons etc.

Lots of achievement points

Fantastic music
Lot of FUN

there is a lot of what you can do.

There is lot of people, who are used to log on meta event, tag boss and go to do other stuff and get reward, now you have to atleast do something, nothing crazy but break breakbar, dodge, and they dont like it and spam here and on reddit negative stuff...
Great for casuals and more hardcore players, give it a try.

I would say no.

While HoT added a new profession to the game and Elite specialisations, PoF added more Elite Specialisations and crucially, mounts, there's nothing of an equal draw with EoD.

Yes, it adds new Elite specs, but beyond that, it adds nothing crucial to the game.

The turtle mount doesn't occupy a niche like previous mounts, and is completely unnecessary.

The Skiff is only good as a platform for fishing, otherwise it's completely outclassed by the Skimmer.

And the much-hyped Jade Bot is almost completely pointless, especially outside of Cantha.

Fishing is fun enough, but not required.

If you're happy just having new maps to explore, go for it. Although even there, content is limited to three world maps and one map dedicated to a controversial meta.

The living world maps offer more value than EoD.

And they were free.

Buy or Skip?

Depends mostly on you.

If you really like some of the things Anet announced: Buy.
If GW2 is the game you like the most: Buy (because there is no other new GW2 content).
If you think after their game announcements "There is not much that interests me": Skip or Wait
If you are a GW1 player who wants to revisit Cantha: Buy
If you are playing together with a friend and you both want to have fun with the turtle: Buy (it's a two player mount that only works good if two players are using it)
If you have not bought/played HoT or PoF yet: Skip/Wait with EoD but buy Hot/PoF instead.
If none of the above matches and you still don't know: Wait and look at more reviews until you know better.

I had a blast with HoT and also PoF at their release. In comparison to both EoD feels a little bit lukewarm. I do have some fun and don't regret buying it. Sure it has bugs and Anet made some mistakes but overall it is not bad. For me it has the lowest "fun per Euro" ratio from all three expansions.

If you just want more elite specs to mess around with then yes. PvP is a whole lot of fun right now. It seems like EoD has revitalised some interest in PvP. But if you don't care about the new elite specs then I'd say no, don't buy it. The elite specs are the bulk of the game for me personally.

The zones look good at first. But I find them boring and forgetable in the long run. The meta events are either annoying, boring, or flat out not suited for open world content.

I never cared about the story in general, so I guess I'm biased on this matter. But I do not recommend buying EoD for the story.

The way they handled the new mount, and straight up lied about its aquisition in the pre-launch streams, put a huge damper on this entire expansion. Right now all the PvE try hards are literally gatekeeping the DE meta.

The grand ending of this entire storyline turned out to be a wet fart at best. Everyone's pants is soiled, the whole thing stinks. Increasingly more people have simply stopped caring about it, and went away to put on some clean underwear elsewhere..

Dead content in 3... 2... 1...

So yeah, for me it's elite specs and PvP. That's the entire expansion for me as it currently stands. Would I have bought this shitshow of an expansion had I known beforehand it would turn out like this? No, I would not have bought it. At the very least I'd have waited until the whole thing got fixed from the ground up.
