Give it to me straight, should I buy EoD or skip? [Merged]

Recommended Posts

I've been really enjoying it and I know it's going to keep me occupied for a long time. I've found the story very interesting and I'm looking forward to seeing how it ends (and what comes next), I've been really enjoying some of the character interactions too, especially Marjory, Rama and Gorrik.

I love the new maps as well. I've been focusing on following the story so I haven't 100% completed any of them but I've found enough interesting places and events, hidden secrets and collections and other achievements that I'm looking forward to going back and finding/completing all the rest of it. Yesterday I found an item in my inventory (I assume I got it from an enemy) which pointed me to a POI. I had to go all around it to find a way to reach it which lead me though a series of hidden entrances into caves (one of which is also a story location and in another I helped fight a champion which I think is the end of an event chain) and eventually into a mini dungeon. Completing that gave me an item which is pointing me to another NPC, so it sounds like I'm not done with this yet. I love things like this. I had no idea any of this was here, I wasn't expecting to do it and I've got no idea where it's leading but I've had a lot of fun finding out and I'm looking forward to doing more. Things like that make it worthwhile to buy more of GW2 even without the extra features.

I'm also enjoying the untamed spec on my ranger and I'm going to set my warrior up as a bladesworn at the weekend. I've always found warrior a bit dull but I think this is going to make it more interesting for me.

It made me revisit the mostly content dry GW2 for a re-spin.

I would say it's worth about 2 weeks of entertainment and then it's non-sub so you can always come back again when you feel like it or new content comes out.

It's not bad, but as everything these days, it might have been a tad bit overhyped, so people are dissapointed.

It could use and probably will receive some polish overtime and there is plenty of stuff to do, although it feels somewhat toned down when compared to HoT for example.

New specs are fun and couple bring special gimmics which are entertaining for a while.

I saw the bots/turtle mount too but Skyscale is still gonna be top prio so idk if any of the EoD mechanics seem useful to me outside of a one time run through.

I like the drone of the bot, but it is not useful (and usable) ATM outside of some EoD maps and a few EoD story steps. The personal waypoint (only one use) of the bot is nearly the same function as a "Prototype Position Rewinder" (that you can buy) and the revive of the bot is nearly the same as a "Revive Orb". The rest of the bot is mostly for buffs and for some mats farming.

Skimmer is more useful than Skiff in most situations. Skiff is only better if you like fishing (alone or together with other players) and fishing is mostly about getting/farming some mats/fish (for selling them or for building things with them or for collections). If you don't like fishing then Skiff is less useful.

The turtle mount is nice, but is a two player mount. The owner is the driver and the passenger is the gunner. The driver can not use the gunner AOE-skill if he has no passenger. And it lacks communication abiliy between driver and gunner. Example: The driver can not see if the gunner is out of ammo (then driver has to run around with the turtle to build ammo). It does good structural damage (required in final EoD map meta event chain) like the bombs from the mobile waystation (from Ice Brood Saga). I tried it in several locations/metas/event in the EoD maps. For me as the driver it feels a little bit boring and clunky during a fight. As a result I used it mostly only in that special event in the EoD map meta event chain.

Maybe Anet will use them more in the next Living World (if there will be a regular Living World after this expansion) but we don't know yet.

Fishing is dope. Skiffs are dope. The turtle is dope. Echovald is gorgeous. Dunno what else you need.

Fishing and skiffs are just useless gimmicks, horribly implemented like the jade bots. Echovald and other maps are filled with lazy designs with nothing but old assets. Hardly anyone in the maps, events and metas failing regularly because of low population and low interest.

Idk man seems silly not to play the new expansion of an MMO.

Idk man, you sound kinda new. If the new "expansion" is nothing but a sub-par dlc pack sold at full price, it's silly not to skip.

OP I will give it to you straight.
You should only buy EoD if you want the specs. Or you are bored of PoF and HoT content. You are not missing much, treat EoD like a badly written fanfiction expansion. If you care about the story of this game, my condolences. Skiff is somewhat faster than Skimmer, but it is a bit scuffed in terms of how good it handles, but its a fun trip with friends.
If you haven't done IBS, do that first.
If you haven't done Roller Beetle, Griffon or Skyscale, DEFINITELY, do them first. You will need that skyscale for EoD anyways. Buy the LS4 packs if you have to, rather than having to rush to EoD.
All other gear stats that is gated by EoD, is not that important for PvE. Vipers are still good. Plaguedoctor still claps. No specs runes.
Despite the nerf of PoF specs, EoD specs is not that much of a powercreep, and people would still rely on PoF specs for most activities. I can't say much about PvP, but WvW, Scrappers for example are still the bread and butter.
Strikes are not that amazing presentation wise (I wished they had more of a FFXIV presentation value, considering this expac really reflects that style of content), but we're waiting on CM if it turns out good, or poop.
Fishing is leisure activity, if you really care about it. I find it relaxing, some find it worthless. The value proposition may vary.

And as this person have said, if in doubt:

Would I have bought this shitshow of an expansion had I known beforehand it would turn out like this? No, I would not have bought it.

Did you miss the memo with 4 beta tests and lots of livestreams revealing the disappointing maps and features? It doesn't take an experienced player more than 10 minutes to recognize low quality. We've tried to warn everybody months ago but those comments were buried/deleted by other comments like "They still have 6 months to develop, they still have 3 months, they still have 2 weeks, everything will be different you'll see!" In hindsight, all this without even knowing about the day one boon and survivability nerf and the empty maps, failing metas etc. made all of this that much funnier :)

Buy or Skip?

Most people are having a great time. The rest are posting in the forums about their dislike. So not listen to what people here are saying otherwise you will get a really wrapped version of reality. Everywhere else, guilds, in game , discord communities, even the sub reddit are enjoying themselves. The only issue is indeed some balancing in the last meta which they are actually fixing as expected. It is easily the best expansion to date if you like HoT style of content.

Got proof for that? I noticed especially in game squad and map chats that people don't like EoD. Most groups in LFG fail to fill because of low population. Don't know where you got that "everywhere else people are happy" from.

GW2 subreddit is notorious for being a safe heaven for fanboys, mods there delete and ban everything that is even slightly not pro GW2 so not surprising it looks like people are enjoying the game over there.

I mean by all means go ahead and preach "don't listen to negative feedback, they are minority" argument, it didn't work out so well for other communities like Rift, Terra, BDO, Neverwinter, SWTOR, LOTRO but I'm sure it will work wonders for GW2's population. Defending bad decisions never worked out well, I'm yet to be proven otherwise.

Bestie it sounds like you want to play literally any other game. If you hate it, leave. Honestly.

I don't play EoD. I'm just informing potential players what they're getting into. Don't listen to apologists, enough said.

"If you don't like it, leave" is another copium argument that made so many mmos fail, it's funny you don't even realize the damage you're causing to your already struggling game.

I’ve enjoyed it, but to a lesser extent than PoF or HoT. There’s a lot less to do than previous expacs and I don’t feel a desire to replay any maps apart from to admire the sheer beauty and absorb the atmosphere.

I’m on Act 3 and the story is well told, but lacking in gameplay. Fishing is great, boats are fantastic. Jade bots are ok, although zip lines are sooo much fun.

The maps are gorgeous, but not necessarily as well designed from a gameplay point of view compared to maps prior to icebrood saga. They lack a certain something. Plus most of the events are fairly uninspiring - in Kaineng more than anywhere. It’s almost like Shing Jea has height just because they could add height, because the various levels really don’t add anything apart from breaking up natural pathing and exploration routes. A weird design.

Its def more fun in coop with the boats and since maps are largely empty of players, it makes it easier to have a friend to run around with.

Cant comment on elites except bladesworn, which seems a cool idea, but feels off somehow.

Overall it is fun, but not their strongest expansion. Which I am a bit surprised about given the development time and the lessons to be learned from previous ones.

Really the sub reddit? When was the last time you read the subreddit? 2012?

Not sure what proof you want...People are playing and are happy with a lot the expansion has to offer. not everything but with a lot. Go into any other forum that the game is discussed and you will see that is completely different than anything said in this forum.

That is completely false. If anything people have been complaining about not having a map queue since it is really annoying to try and find non full maps during the metas.

https://old.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/t8wxik/can_we_get_a_damned_map_queue/

Have you even played EoD?

Skip -

Rewards vs time input are pitiful. New specialisations are meh. Turtle - who needs it? Gen 3 Legendary Weapons are really ugly. Oh and unless you like strike missions this is not the expansion for you.

Hot and PoF are far superior in terms of events and meta; and reward rate is far better.

Today. Yes, really. Every day topics like "omg anet EOD is the best thing evah" pop up, completely oblivious to how horribly this dlc pack has been received.

Proof that "everywhere else other than these forums are enjoying this game" which is straight up false. There were even LFG listings in game with titles such as "DE sucks" boycotting the game. Were you asleep?

Wrong. Because the map capacity is very limited, it gets full way faster than non EoD maps. Which makes the already badly designed meta even harder to complete because of all the randoms in the map not even contributing to events. That is literally the opposite of "oh gawd, maps are so full this game is insanely popular" you're trying to preach. Not even close.

Low population and deserted maps for a newly released expansion are "completely false" too? I'm sure they're just figments of people's imagination.
