So Catalyst gets only nerfs due to static golem/large boss dps, but nothing to address its numerous issues

There is a reason Catalyst is the least used and most disliked new spec.  Hammer is horrible to use due to Hammer 3 kitten spam, bad range attacks, no survivability, no mobility, poor break-bar attacks, and rubbish condition damage.  Augments are also extremely weak outside of raids, yet they just get damage nerfs only, while the elite remains useless with its 90 second cooldown.  The survivanility traits were even NERFED, even though the Catalyst is the most fragile spec in the game.

But of course the biggest issue here is the Jade Sphere cooldown nerf.  While it makes the horrible frantic rotation less spammy, it also means you are sitting there not using the new profession mechanic for 15 seconds.  It is also means mobility kills the Catalyst extra hard, as do short battles.  Anet has clearly only thought of static raid bosses, and not considered at all smaller battles, or how it feels to have such a poor Elite defining ability.  I mean, what is the point now in even having energy on this stupid orb, and the energy trait, if you can only cast it every 15 seconds?  What even is the IDENTITY of this elite spec?  Because right now it is 'a field every 15 seconds'.  IS that what Anet was going for?

Please, actually LISTEN to the feedback from the players, instead of just looking at someone beating up a golem.

  • Avatara.1042 changed the title to So Catalyst gets only nerfs due to static golem/large boss dps, but nothing to address its numerous issues

The spec is boring, the mechanics are bland and uninspired, it has no mobility, no hp,  no sustain (sylvari heal is better than cat), no boons, no special and strong traits, most of the weapon skills are dogwater, utility skills are bland shouts, the ultimate skill is less of an ultimate and more of a normal utility skill and the only thing the spec had going for is when snowcrow was able to do massive dps on the golem dps check with macro and 100% uptime on all boons and buffs.

Now it doesnt even have that.

Well ya that what anet dose. Mindlessly adds and nerfs hit box base dps for ele. Even in there own internal testing they should of known this was going to happen. Even the old staff MS skill was nerfed hard because of this yet anet keeps adding them into the game.

I think we can start thinking of anet as being sadistic when it comes to the ele class and the ele player base.

Your Elite spec has a mech!

Your Elite spec has a gunsaber and a super-hard hitting charging Iai slash!

Your Elite spec can place a field every 15 seconds!

Nice one, Anet.

Thanks arenanet for such amazing spec design, i love "casting" some circles on the ground that does absolutely nothing, woho.

When one specialization (or build) ticks too many boxes in a way where it stifles what is seen as broadly viable (or worse, creates an environment of peer pressure to play a profession you don't enjoy, just because it's seen as more optimal for the content), we have to get at the root of the problem causing that pressure, and make changes to keep it from constricting the overall metagame. Catalyst had a problem that needed quick tuning to address—it was both dealing chart-topping DPS and providing 100% quickness uptime for a party simultaneously, and thus was at risk of displacing all other hybrid quickness DPS builds. Our last patch firmed up Catalyst's support build but left the DPS build underperforming our own desires for the specialization, and so it's getting an array of positive changes in the next patch that will shore up its damage-dealing ability, make it perform consistently regardless of target hitbox size, and make the play pattern for optimal skill usage much more accessible and forgiving."

The first major profession update will go live on June 28, although an earlier update targeting PvP and WvW balance will launch on March 29.

Well especially this part: "Our last patch firmed up Catalyst's support build but left the DPS build underperforming our own desires for the specialization, and so it's getting an array of positive changes in the next patch that will shore up its damage-dealing ability, make it perform consistently regardless of target hitbox size, and make the play pattern for optimal skill usage much more accessible and forgiving."

This part feels good. I hope they will also do what they promise.

But if they do, its rly rly nice.

Thanks for the link! I didnt see it yet.

However, as I said, I hope they also will hold their promise.

Tho...June 28?...I hope it wont stay in this state until then....At least I would like to get some dmg increase before...

Well I don't agree their last change to catalyst "firmed up the support build", just relaying information I found that isn't in the blogpost.

If anything the quickness catalyst build feels worse to play after 15s jade sphere cooldown. If for example quickness was applied instantly on spectacular sphere instead of fury it would immediately be playable in PVE so long as the hammer orbs are maintainable. This would also inherently balance any quickness build by slashing upwards of 10% damage from trait damage mods. Every other quickness build has a fire and forget usage right now whether it is CQB (easy recovery due to mantra of potence being 12s cooldown before alac or Weighty Terms), StM chrono (with Improved Alacrity / "IA" the shatter is 8s cooldown under alac), quickness harbinger (you just stay in shroud afk and it will apply quickness) or quickness scrapper (just use the gyros , function gyro is a backup to fill gaps). I play all of these builds by the way so I have decent reference for comparison.

Quickness catalyst has no boon uptime recovery potential anymore so long as you need multiple pulses (i.e. 1s x5 = 5s duration before boon duration and traits) : a longer +100% boon duration is significantly worse than halving base cooldown to 7.5s when traited with Sphere Specialist (even 9 or 10s would be better than 15 base cooldown) as even under alacrity and arcane you have 10.5s cooldown right now (12s without arcane). If QoL were the main focus of the sphere specialist change it wouldn't have been +100% boon duration and simply pulsed 5 seconds of the attunement linked boon on use. Realistically you are swapping attunements such that  your hammer orbs stay up, having a 10+ second recharge jade sphere runs counter to that. If you have 3 pulses hit similar to a chrono well then you're looking at 12s total quickness even with Sphere Specialist which means you need 100% boon duration to maintain it with alacrity. If you're optimistic and 4 of 5 pulses trigger you're looking at 8 out of 12s under alac without boon duration which means for 100% uptime the boon duration requirement is 30-50% depending on if you run arcane. I would even rather have 60% of the jade sphere cooldown as making it 3 pulses with 9s base cooldown is more inline with chrono/firebrand.

Before catalyst nerf patch despite people complaining I was able to attain 75% quickness in an actual fight scenario with 10% or so boon duration and I wasn't full berserker I had some dragon pieces. This means double catalyst would easily cover 100% uptime if jade sphere weren't so finnicky. They designed themselves into a corner similar to Righteous Rebel on renegade where unless the alternative trait is extremely strong people are going to be able to run two of a class for a specific boon with just a trait change. With catalyst it's inherently worse because unlike renegade's Heroic Command, deploy jade sphere (air) is only available on air attunement so running 2 DPS catalyst with a trait swap is liable to be an option superior to a DPS of any type with a quickness catalyst provided DPS catalyst does enough damage (see chrono Time Warp stack, 2 CFB with Mantra of Potence, or guardian stacking FMW).
