On my YouTube channel (travel, not gaming), I apparently said the "f" word (not 'fun' or 'fabulous', the other one).  I got one complaint. He said he was shocked that I would speak that way and would not watch my videos if it continued.  I told him I was really going to miss him ha ha   I also got 5 compliments, so he was outvoted - as if I cared.  😎

Hehe I had a similar experience on a friends stream once many years ago.

He was playing Gw2 and I was running around with him in game and we were just joking around and having fun like normal and the chat was joining in as usual and having fun.
At some point my friend decided to use a very colourful 4 letter profanity that did not start with an F and directed it at me because I was messing around in game like I always did.
I obviously knew it was a joke but a number of his Twitch chat (who were mostly Americans at the time I think) didn't and they got very offended over it and jumped to my defence and starting scorning my friend for attacking one of his viewers.

We both had to explain how normal this kind of language was for us and I had to reassure them that it was not intended to be a hostile or insulting remark, it was just a joke, a bit of playful banter that accurately reflects the closeness of a long real life friendship that we have built over most of our lives at that point.

A couple of other viewers whom were also from our country also chimed in as well to affirm how normal such language was in our culture especially among close friends.
It was enough to diffuse the situation in the end and my friend escaped any kind of unwarranted punishment thankfully.

It's a pretty funny story we look back on and laugh at now.

This made me laugh 😊. Some words or expressions definitely do not cross over to other countries or cultures well..once they are explained they're usually quite amusing. Even within some large countries there are regional differences that can be taken as offensive or be off putting.  Some things do need a level of familiarity frequently, which may be missed online since you're not face to face and don't know.  Be kind, take a moment to ask for clarification, and take a moment to explain hey it's friendly banter...nicely done Teratus.

 Of course, always take into consideration there might be kids or people who it would be sensitive for, know you audience...hence why some guilds say +18 only, etc.  In the past I've had parents ask the guild to keep chat family friendly while there kids played for a bit, and people were happy to help out and make sure no one started any mischievous conversation.  

There's no harm in having a possible language filter for the game itself and throw kittens.  It's quite minimal though and the rating system really does cover language, alcohol, violence, and the possibility of other players being colorful.

There's definitely a level of risk you agree to when you join any kind of online community.. people do need to be more aware of that in general I think.

But being able to tailor your experience to your preferences in games and stuff should be a possibility.
Language filters do serve as one tool for that, as does block functions.
Sadly there are some players who don't use those though and feel like they shouldn't have too.

You only have your self to blame though if you dislike profanities but still turn your filter off.. I mean that's just common sense lol
But I do ultimately agree with the OP about the NPC dialogue, if you are someone who prefers to avoid profanity by keeping their filter on, then it should apply also to NPC's as well imo.

I mean, it's been established at this point that the game has a rating, and if someone isn't happy with the rating, they don't have to purchase the game.  

Otherwise, there is no limit to what a person can take offense to.  I've been around people in my life that just the dragon's speaking would be considered 'demonic', and even stricter yet that view any talking animal as pagan or occult.  Then you have the 'relationship themes' that some consider offensive, as well as the closet xenophobes that don't like Cantha at all.

I personally don't understand it, because if someone's household is 'above' swearing, why not be 'above' murder? As I don't know how many countless people, animals, and otherworldly creatures the commander has murdered at this point.

I never said anything like that--but if you want to compare 'pre-teen edgelord' speak you might want to surf some fortnite discords or something.  

If Rama's dialouge is changed to call Minister Li an incel or something then we may be on the same page here.

Nice False equivalence Goldclaw is basically ignorable no where do you ever have to interact with him to progress the story. the objectionable words used mentioned here are part of the main story line and as a result there is no way to just avoid them

Being honest I was not that annoyed by the cursing except that the word "God****" was coming out of my Asura they don't believe in gods . there is a lot of dialog choices in EoD that simply do not do not fit the world i turned my sound off hald way thrugh the story and walked starburst to starburst half way through because so much of the dialog was that annoying

 

prime example the mission "Your Kind of people" has some terrible example of Valey-girl speak

This is the character that is bored with living where she is and wants to go to the big city. A bored teenanger-young adult. Her speach was made this way on purpose, exaggerated a bit, but on purpose. For me it felt natural honetly. Like "I want to sound cool but it doesn't work out" typ of way.

I took her as being extremely sarcastic. Maybe that's the kiwi culture and how a bunch of us interpret that type of talk.

It should be up to the PARENTS if their kids are exposed to content like swearing and sex. Profanity filter should be in place.

I noticed the dialog picked up a little more mature attitude in Icebrood Saga (Rytlock) and to be honest I like it. Keeping it within GW age rating, it added a bit of realism.

It is up to the parents to police what games their kids play. This game is rated for age 13 and up. I have seen nothing in this game that is age inappropriate. 😎

I think it is an "American thing" - they love rifles and violence but are pretty strict when it comes to sexuality or bad words that contain "god". While in Europe sexuality is a normal thing and rifles are not not that normal as in America (stricter gun control lawes here and less laws about restricting pornography).

So I partly can understand requests for censorship since the company is based in the US and the game has a lot of players from the US.

On the other hand: I think I remember certain dialogues where the stuff already was censored in a way that it did not feel like censorship. (Static sound and bad connection with the communicator when someon wanted to say a f-word or something like that.)

Wouldn't it for the strict people also be a problem that there is homosexuality? They might consider then to not play their kids the game at all. Not everything can be censored and with this the game and the company want to include such people. Even though the "stricter" religious families might not like this.

But well ... as long as it was optional ... they can bring whatever filter they want. I do not care. I'm sure they have marketing people as well that take this into account. (And that such stuff might - even if it was optional - discourage other more liberal people even at the US.) But I don't want to too too much into politics.

If this game has an  official US age rating the OP might also consider talking to institutions (if there are any - I do not have much knowledge about this) that monitor such ratings and stuff. To make sure it is appropriate and in line with the content in the game. If they think it was wrong and should have a rating targeted at older people because of certain words. (Therefore forcing the company to apply the other age rating or changing the content or making filters.)

Ah there is it again, the double standards, instead just let your children learn these words, it's really no that bitter and ultimately they will know the manyways. Just be more chill like Europe, we show nudity and profanity and still have a high standard of living.

These complaints seem very American: they don’t have a problem with guns in schools but freak out when their children see nudity or hear bad words.
