imo it is a bit of a tragedy with so many potential build combinations that there is only a relative handful of builds that people gravitate towards in spvp.  devs need to up their game and find some solutions to increase the viability of a much broader spectrum of build/gear/trait combos.    we all want to play a broader variety of builds, but all too often the trade offs are too much and end up costing a build too much to compete.  and most potential builds, for all their merits, get tossed to the wayside, in favor of demonstrably better builds.

absolutely. there is practically no build variety in this game cuz 3/4 of utility skills are utterly useless, 1 or 2 traitlines aren't good enough for what we have to give up, and for some professions there are a couple of weapons that haven't been updated since pre HoT nerfs. its an utter disgrace and if all of this was fixed the entire game would be in such a better state. people want to play their own builds, but don't want to play the game if they can't cuz there is only so long a person can willingly force themselves to play a meta build to feel useful before they give up and choose to play another game instead.

Traits were always the problem.  You're never going to have a high level of variety and viability if so many interactions are completely dominated by how certain passives boost a small pool of actives.  Instead of elite specs being the way players "customize" their builds, GW2 really should have turned the elite slot into a 4th utility slot, dropped a weapon skill slot for a 5th utility, and then culled utility options down to maybe 10-15 per class while incorporating the strongest elements of the elite spec options into them.  Then you could have had actual "elite skills" in the utility pool (i.e. Holo-Mode as an Elite Skill on your 5-slot utility bar, but you could still run hammer with some gyros because nothing would be trait-locked).

The fact that this situation even occurs is very frustrating.   Why the hell are only a few builds effective?  Also, why did I have to find out which ones where complete crap by trial and error?  If certain abilities are crap, they don't belong in the game.  What is the point of any ability that relies on the target NPC standing still?  The entire combat system is designed around movement.  If the ability counts on the target remaining in the same place, wandering into something, or lining up in a nice queue, then it doesn't belong in this combat system.  While were at it, why have abilities that need to be aimed?  Just hit what I'm locked onto.  That stupid skyscale attack is one of the prime examples.  It's difficult to aim.  At least the raptor tail sweep is easy to use in combat.

Meta is always conditioned by where the strong mechanics/exploits are. For instance one can play any healer but they will never succeed as much as they would on core guardian because core guardian has lots of instant casts , so much broader access to instant cast stability/cleanses etc.  It is just better no matter what. It could be solved by adding cast times to guardian but Anet would never do it
