Do WvW dies slowly? Would it be empty like Edge of the Mists game mode in the end?

Vanilla was before HoT.  WvW wasn’t dead.

It tanked heavily after HoT release and for the 6-9 months following.

what? Yes it was dead before HoT. Its why Server Links had to happen. the population was so low on most servers Elite Specs somewhat saved WvW because people came back to play the new stuff.

No…. EoTM was released because of overflow maps being needed.  (Feb 2014.)

HoT came out with the new map and forced players into PvE to ramp back up for guilds and claiming.

Then the new specs created multiple issues, people started leaving, and starting April 22 2016, the linking ‘beta’ started.

HoT released:  Oct 2015.

only few servers overflowed. The servers that everybody was leaving their server to join. EoTM at one point was more popular than WvW maps because it had cross server gameplay instead of being limited to the dying server worlds and also had lots of rewards.  WvW was dead.

We remember EoTM very differently…. EoTM was frequented by people leveling alts, and several guilds who did everything in their power to coordinate running in a circle and leaving each other alone.

EoTM was in response to overflow queues.  It was stated in their info at the time.

It was far from dead, apart from the Bronze lower tier servers in the EU before HoT, even in terms of EoTM.

It's only after the borders changed to all Desert, did the activity on most servers drop apart from EBG, especially a couple of months after HoT Launched, but then it recovered once again until it is the way it is now, because there was no other decent competition, in terms of RvR Game modes in other games/MMOs.

Although there were many guilds who came back for HoT and then quit, cause of several reasons, like the change to stability into stacks, which made large scale very pirate shippy.

EU lost over the last two years so many active openfield Wvw guilds, it has by now only the casual ones left, with like 2-3 exceptions. really feels like "slow dying"

the damage nerfs just been too much. we have not literally 1 peak dps with dragonhunter/core guard , maybe + vindicator eventually (vindi hasnt a full performance metabuild yet tho)

the nerfs to warri bubbles been bad, losing offense pressure completely at support classes & the removing of retaliation was horribly bad (as it rewarded mobile gankers and freecasters against groups) - to give just a few examples

its a slug to kill guards, siege, downed players with so few damage sources

so yeah, game gets worse since years, and many main Wvw players therefore lose interest and quit. EoD may been a sale success, but i kinda expected much more from it. it gave pretty much nothing to Wvw and the classes aren't that good.

i dislike them overall and wouldn't really miss any, if anet would remove all of them. they have a far too mobile playstyle with random smallscale oneshot trybuilds and tons of condistuff, exactly what gw2 - or at least Wvw -  did NOT need

therefore also 0% hyped for this next expansion. i pre ordered two copies of EoD, was a  mistake. i won't even get one of the next expansion, unless anet makes some useful things then.
