Not sure if it (still) works, but gw2 has a command line  argument to force the game in 32-bit mode (-32):

-32 prevents the 32-bit client from automatically switching to the 64-bit client on a 64-bit system. It still works, but there's no point - the 32-bit client is no longer functional and will tell you to upgrade.

Ok, it is still mentioned on wiki, but i already was afraid that it "stopped" working (a.k.a. became useless)... ty for your explanation.

What are the specs of the system? Does it have a 64bit cpu but a 32 bit install of windows? If it truly is a old 32 bit system then odds are even if the 32 but launcher still works the frame rate would probably make the gaming experience awful at best.

Your friend could check if his/her/x laptop actually has a x64 capable CPU. 32-bit only CPUs have not been sold for ages and if the CPU supports x64 instructions it is possible to install a 64-bit OS on it and run the modern Guild Wars 2 client.

In addition, you require a 64-bit operating system for that. You can't run 64-bit programs on a 32-bit OS.

However,  after a very quick Google search, I discovered that emulators exist:

Edit: What's the confused reactions for? I was perfectly clear on the facts.

Err, what are the actual system specs? There hasn't been a pure 32-bit Intel CPU since like 2010, and even that was just some runty Atoms. Most chips were x86-64 by like 2005 or so.

Seems far more likely they've just got a 32-bit OS for some reason.
