First, OP I am sorry for you. I am sure it sucks.

That said, there is a point where we have to acknowledge that we cant bubblewrap the world to prevent people from making mistakes. We already have layers of protection to reduce the chance of making mistakes with character and equipment deletion. What would be next, multipart phone verification if you decide to unlock a character? Then a dna test to submit for the phone verification? Then a court submitted legal document, to be approved by a judge, to be able to submit the dna test to be able to access phone authentication to unlock the account to be able to type in the character's full name, to click on yes? It would suck to have to take a week off work in order to delete an unwanted account bound minipet.

Disagree. This isn't about bubble wrap, it's about interface design. You can't prevent all mistakes, but you can help someone help themself avoid mistakes, which is what the OP is suggesting; a way for them to essentially mark a character as protected, so they won't get confused later.

That said, another deterrent might be to show more identifying information about the character either in general or when deleting, since even with a "lock" you could place the lock on a different character than you intended. If I understand correctly, OP had named the characters similarly and had similar look, and so this particular mechanism (making you type in the name) did not help.

So it's not about needing another layer, so much as it is needing an additional different kind of mechanism that covers a situation where naming is not distinct enough for someone to notice. Like if it had shown character inventory or equipped gear, for example, in this case OP prob would have stopped hard in their tracks, since they had emptied things from one to the other.

Even though I do agree about having a locking option that is still a terrible argument. The solution to making a mistake is not to make more mistakes. The general solution to stupid prompts is to get rid of them not add more prompts for the sake of consistency.

Adding lock option wouldn't make it worse, as it would be optional, some would find it useful, for others no change.

Consistency is important, if trivial things have confirmations, then important ones should have some fool-proof.

Though, nothing stopping them from removing unnecessary confirmations, or they can add don't ask again checkboxes which are available basically in every other software. But they actively refuse to follow good UI practices.

Deleting a character is already a multistep, layer, process. Adding more steps or layers solves nothing that one cannot already solve for oneself.

You already have to type in the full character's name. If you can do that and still somehow not notice which character you're deleting, then some "click to lock/unlock" button won't change that either as it's done easier/faster than the currently needed typed out character name. Strip the character you set up for deletion, so it's clearly standing out without armor/outfit and type the correct name of the character you're deleting, not sure why you'd need more than that.

Or, don't name characters with very similar names to avoid confusion?
