Malus.2184
I just had a random shower thought to day. Asura tech is fueled by crystals. Jade tech is fueled by the ambient magic in Dragon Jade Charr tech is fueled by? How does the Charr fuel their tech? By grit and determination? Because there are no oil extrators anywhere, which rules out typical organic fuel.
Narcemus.1348
My guess would be burning something. Their technology is not magically fueled because they somewhat hate magic. And since it is steam powered either wood or tar or some other element found in the region.

SoftFootpaws.9134
They burn wood and oil to boil water and thus run steam-based engines. This is shown many times through the game, and tar elementals and oozes always pop out when something goes wrong. They don't seem to have internal combustion engines, as we've never seen oil being directly used as a fuel source, I think? Maybe they have combustion-based engines by the time of Icebrood Saga. This method of power generation is used in other areas of the world, by the Dredge, and by the poorer districts in Cantha, as well as for the Steam Machines and (presumably) the Watchknights based upon them. Steam and arcane energy seem to be the two main methods of creating energy in Tyria. Jade Tech seems to be a kind of hybrid between the two, where arcane energy is used to run eletricity-based technology by using it for power generation instead of directly as a power source. The mechanisms behind this are never really explained, but its been hinted at since the core game that steamtech and magitech were always meant to be combined as each has their own advantages and weakness and is inefficient on its own. (The Molten Alliance was the first example we saw of this occuring.) Edited September 15, 2022 by Mariyuuna.6508

Coal isn't used as a fuel source, its just used to drive steam turbines, so its still steam power. It serves as an alternative to wood, oil or any other combustable substance to boil water. In the real world nuclear power is also used to drive turbines, but its still all steam based. Edited October 10, 2022 by Mariyuuna.6508
