Returning player after a few years. I'm not a hard core player but enjoy the different aspects of the game. I was surprised to see so many people still playing but I'm still undecided if I should upgrade simply for the mounts. Don't get me wrong; I play Asura and my little legs can't keep up with the mounts and they look amazing, but should I be spending my limited budget on the game?! I have a few friends that still play off and on but not as hardcore as we did back in the day.

What are your thoughts about the current state of the nation in Guildwars 2?

The Doomsayers are upon us!

Actually, for a game that age, it still offers a lot to explore and enjoy, despite the negativity of a portion of the player base. It is the Internet after all.

HoT comes as a freebie for buying the second expansion, PoF. It is PoF that offers the mounts. HoT offers gliding and an (un)healthy dose of wall to the unsuspecting newbie--or long-gone veteran. Once you get over that hump, HoT has aged well and still provides some of the most interesting and rewarding open world meta events.

Yes, mounts are totally worth it. I found PoF a nicer expansion than HoT for a first playthrough and a more relaxed time on the maps. Its open world meta events unfortunately do not have the same replay value as those of HoT. It is also required for Seasons 4 and 5. Season 4 is imho the pinacle of GW2 in terms of story, fun and reward.

I misread 'from HoT' as 'to HoT'.

Never ever ask any MMO player of the "current state" of any MMO they are playing as you only ask for a massive fight between those who think that their game are "dead" or going to die soon and those who just don't see any of those problems. 😄

Anyway use GW2 wiki to look up what you will get when you add Path of Fire and/or End of Dragons expansion to your account. You might also have to buy Living World Seasons if you have been gone so long and not logged to get those episodes for free.

There where just a sale for LW season 2 and season 3 in Gem Store which have ended, so those are possible to get for reduced price if you wait long enough.

We aren't too far from Black Friday and last time I bought my second account (PoF which at that time included HoT), so it can be a good idea to keep an eye out for good deals both on ANets Twitter account (see right side of this forum or join Twitter to have messages sent to you when this happens), what news that are in GW2 Launcher (easy to miss if you use autolog in and press "enter" to get into game fast) and on GW2 main news page.

You can also just buy the Collection (see table for more information about different version of Collection) if you buy it on Steam which then contain everything up to todays last episodes for LW (on Steam this is replacing the 4000 Gems you would instead get for Ultimate version), but you will have to start all over as ANet based account wont transfer anything of what you have unlocked or bought to Steam or vice verse. Steam and ANet based account play in the same game world, so from that point you wouldn't see any difference.

Just be aware that you can not buy Collection (on Steam this is labeled as an DLC - all expansion work this way on Steam + LW package) which contain all LW from Steam's web shop (and Collection bought from Steam - Ultimate version contains instead 4000 Gems which you have to wait a couple days before you can access as to prevent credit card abuse), so you have to decide what you will do before you make pruchase on Steam Web shop or purchase in game (Gem Store) for what you need. Read sticky and comments on Steam before you do any action to know what limitation there couold be.

Read link below as to what each expansion will contain outside of just mounts for PoF.

How far did you get in HoT before you left this game? It would tell us more of how much time you have invested and if that is any idea to use more money to buy PoF or EoD  (or all published expansion and LW in one go).

You don't need to worry about the game itself, as you've seen there's still plenty of people online regularly, we've got the finale of Season 1 returning next week, a new season planned for after that (probably starting in January) as well as other regular updates and Anet have already confirmed they're working on the next expansion. So there's no reason to think it's going to shut down or go inactive any time soon.

But if you've just come back and you're not sure you're going to stick around it's probably best not to buy the new expansions right away, especially if the only thing which interests you is the mounts. (I assume you're aware there's a lot more included than just mounts, like HoT the newer expansions add new maps, stories, masteries, elite specs, and a bunch of achievements and items to collect.)

See how you get on with what you've already got and if you think you're going to play enough that it's worth paying for more of the game you can buy it then. It's very likely there will be a sale before the end of the year, so you might be able to get it at a discount too.

you guys all rock. Thank you! Didn't occur to me to keep an eye out for Black Friday sales. If I'm able to catch it, that would greatly help.

I feel like the only kid in the class without the cool car. 😂 I'm so glad the community is still going strong. ❤️ Hopefully, next sale day, I'll be joining the mounts! ONWARD NOBLE STEEDS!
