Why is this forum’s text editor so plain?

Recommended Posts

Ever since it got updated, the text editor of the forum is rather plain and hard to use.

Why isn’t it possible to embed pictures anymore? Why can’t I check the code to see, if there’re unnecessary formatting in my text? Why can’t I remove all text formatting, if an inserted text is all messed up?

I miss the previous version, where you could also use Markdown commands (**, ~~, etc.) to format a text. They were much easier to use than BBCode of the old forum. The threads about update notes use things like headings and titles, but I don’t know how to add/use them myself. I beg you to update and expand the commands of the text editor.

I don't know what sort of answer you are looking for but it basically all comes down to "because ANet didn't want them enabled". Details below.

When you paste in formatted text there should be a bar that pops up in the bottom of editor that lets you strip the formatting.

https://ckeditor.com/docs/ckeditor5/latest/features/autoformat.html Markdown is still supported so the devs might be using the editor with those enabled but it is more likely that they are simply writing those post in something else and pasting it in to post. Although that might differ from dev to dev. Evidence for the external editor use comes from the times when their post has a static white background, even for and to the annoyance of people using the dark theme.

The new editor is super great if you're on the dark theme. Whenever someone copies and pastes text from somewhere else and it comes out with white backgrounds, and forced formatting for some reason.

There's so many posts that turn into an unreadable mess.

Anyway, ArenaNet doesn't have anything to do with the forum software and can't control it. Its developed and hosted by Invision and the previous forum was made by some other company, I think?

and sometimes people decide to make the text extra small ...

forum and editor are by different people and this is the third forum software already

As much as the first in-house forum software had 'search' issues, I liked it the best.  Then, I guess Vanilla software, and least Invision.

The first one was from Fangamer which is strange because that doesn't seem to be a product or service that was ever offered by them.

Thanks for the information, @Khisanth.2948. My understanding is that there could be more features, but ANet decided to leave us with the demo version. Currently, I have the impression that our options are more limited than ever and we were able to create better threads/posts with the old forum’s software.

None of the things you described are part of the premium set https://ckeditor.com/pricing so it's not a matter of paying for the features.

I don't see any relation between quality of posts and discussion with the editor. Except maybe image embedding. Some things could be better explained with images or at least easier to explain.
