100 Gold For Reading 10 Chapters Of A Novel?

Recommended Posts

"1 slots. If any  of you enjoy reading as a hobby and can articulate. I'm giving away 100g to each person who will read 10 chapters of my novel. Whisper me."

Lately I've been seeing this message show up in map chat a lot when I'm in Divinity's Reach and it's making me curious. The first time I saw it I whispered the sender asking if this was real and if so, whether the novel involved was porn or not. I never did get an answer. Has anyone actually responded to this and, if so, what happened?

$3.65 for a review and maybe generate some traffic for your novel? Sounds like a pretty good deal for the author.

Ah, that makes sense. The idea had never occurred to me but yeah, trying to garner reviews on a site like Amazon or Goodreads sounds like a real possibility.

RMT, report and move on.

I didn't report them because I had no idea what they were doing and I was genuinely curious what this was all about. If they are indeed trying to generate positive reviews on some website though, then yeah, I guess that could be a RMT. So far it doesn't seem like anyone has actually taken them up on the offer so we don't know for sure what's going on.

I once asked them why they needed to pay anyone to read their work. I said people would be happy to review for free if they would tell us a little bit about it.
They told me they wouldn't be answering the first question because they've received it hundreds of times. They also said they hated gamers because gamers "assumed everything".
It was extremely offputting considering I had been genuinely curious and just wanted to help. That was in the Grove.
A day or two later I saw them advertising in Divinity's Reach.

I put a confused emjoi on your post not because I dislike or am trying to downvote what you said, but because that person's response really does confuse me. If they don't want to answer questions about what they are doing and if they hate gamers, why the heck are they trying recruit any of us to read their novel? Thanks for posting this. It definitely adds to the ongoing mystery...

The answer they gave is so strange. If they feel gamers "assume everything" and hate them (assuming they are not a gamer themselves. Hey, look they were right 👀), why did they go to the length of downloading the game, creating a character and log in to communicate with these gamers they hate. Offering them to pay if they read their novels. So weird.

This actually sounded like an enticing offer to me the first couple times I saw it floating around in map chat (Mistlock and a few other places), but the more days passed and I kept seeing it, often with the disclaimer that they were 'only taking one slot' attached, I started to figure that if it was really was as good or real a deal as it sounded it would've been filled up by now. Or in the very least they wouldn't still be needing to advertise so aggressively. I assumed there'd be a ton of prospective takers.

Hmm.  What they want, and what they claim to want are not the same.  You folks have noted the incongruencies.   I doubt that a manuscript exists.  A reason to hate gamers because they "assume things" is because the experienced gamers regularly solve puzzles and can spot a scam.
If you want to peddle a swords and sorcery book, I suppose GW2 would have an overlapping audience.  However they are being rude to the prospective reviewers they claim to want.  One must assume that they actually want something else.  The novel and the gold are specific lures.  I just don't quite grasp how they determine that the people whispering them aren't the proper victims for their scam.  I would think that it would take a longer exchange.
I wonder what the actual scam is?

Well, at least this is preferable to what they were saying they'd do to children of color.  I'm glad they've reformed.

If you're talking about the person I think you're talking about, I would stay very very far away from anything they have to say, either in game or in a "novel".

Hmm... at the time I'm posting this, there have been 695 views of this thread. And so far, not one person has said anything about actually reading this person's novel and getting 100 gold for it. Curiouser and curiouser. I really am wondering just what the heck is going on with this person.  🧐

A friend and guildmate of mine actually was able to contact this person and get his paws on the 'novel'. The author wanted someone to read it and give some constructive criticism. Oops, i mean they freaked out when my friend read the thing and tried to mention a few things such as plot holes and character development, etc. Looks more like the author wants an echo chamber, not advice.

Ah, thank you. This is the first indication that there really is a novel. Sounds like the strangeness surrounding all this may have more to do  with the author's fragile ego than any kind of scam. Did your friend actually receive the 100 gold?

Report  and move on.

It's not clear what there is to report and I really have been curious about what's going on here.
