Can't complete progress bar for Battle for Lion's Arch.

I absolutely hate that I cant finish the progress bar for this story mission by myself. I want to skip this part and just move on to finish the last episode of season 1 but I'm forced to complete events for a bar that doesn't save progress in a map with maybe 10 people. I know there are solutions like making your own squad, checking lfg, or trying peak times. I shouldn't have to do that for story content. Am I just missing something?

The progress bar for the overall event is not the same as the one for your personal story.

 

It is absolutely possible to progress the personal story by finishing some events, then enter the story mission in the center of the map, alone.

 

Think of this instance as a mini open world map design around many event chains and it might make more sense.

I went in the public instance, soloed some easier events until started noticing more players around and then joined them on boss fights. Ten people should be plenty for most of them since we did many with only five or so. Still, as you said, it's best to try this at peak hours.

I did the same thing until we captured the map and beat the boss, then the event just stalled out and nothing happened, progress bar not full and no way to advance.  Still have not been able to complete the story since I came back to the game

Well then you joined the map late or did not do to many events around the map, go into another one and continue completing events untill the green bar fills and you have a star on the map.
