guild wars 2 keeps crashing, any suggestions i haven't tried?

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

So here is my situation, after getting myself a new pc gw2 keeps crashing multiple times per day, even to the point that it crashes my whole pc.

It happens most of the times when i am launching some of my alts with launchbuddy to get their daily login, but also sometimes when im just on my main.

does anyone have suggestions of potential troubleshooting i could concider?

My pc specs are:

-amd ryzen 5 7600x

-amd rx6750xt

-32gb kingston 6000mhz ddr5 ram (turned the speed down to 5200 in the bios, because officially the 7600x can go up to 5200)

The OS that i am on is windows 11.

Usually i try to fix things like crashes myself, but im a bit out of things that could be potential fixes.

The things i tried are:

-running memtest86 to check my ram, 4 passes 0 errors

-reinstalling my gpu and chipset drivers

-rerolling to a older version of my gpu driver

-making an exception on firewall on gw2

-reinstalling gw2, and cleaning the appdata files of gw2

I will add the crash dump as well here, so you guys can take a look at it.

Is that recommended for your mobo and BIOS version?  You might want to review/verify those settings.  Is this using XMP or EXPO profiles?

@Chaba.5410 @Linken.6345Hey, thanks for your input on my issue:)

The info at the bottom of the post i provided was the crashdump in the gw2 folder, i did open it with windbg to read out the info in the crashdump, and copy and pasted the info.

I was running expo indeed, today i did disable expo in bios, and i did put everything on auto,  however it crashed again today despite leaving everything on default. The ram i have in on the QVL list on the motherboard, and the motherboard does support up to 6400mhz in expo.

Today i also did leave speedfan running, to also make sure that the temps were fine when it crashed, and at the time of crashing my cpu reached 84 degrees celcius, wich is not too hot for my cpu (it may get up to 95 degrees according to amd)

I did copy the crash log this time, instead of reading it out in windbg.

Update to my post, i did just run a scan on corrupted windows files, turned out there were corrupted windows files, this might have caused it but i have to wait and see if its stable now that i repaired the corrupted files.

Any further troubleshooting i could perform if it still keeps crashing?

I was gonna suggest try using "auto" for EXPO.

What are your graphics settings for the game, by chance?  Some people have found using the frame rate limiter helps and to use "auto-detect" first.

The only other thing is Windows 11 has a mysterious bug currently with AMD TPMs.  You might want to try turning off Windows security features that may be automatically turned on like Memory Core Isolation.

The bottom line is this error you're getting is a generic permission error that could be caused by any number of things not necessarily directly related to RAM.  The amdxx64.dll driver is unable to complete what is being requested of it.  That's the AMD DirectX graphics driver.

Your crash log also has: "Failed to write user-preferences."

On top of all that, GW2 has been converting over to DX11 from DX9 from Feb. to this month and it's been buggy.  So backing off on your in-game graphics settings might help.

@Chaba.5410 The settings are on high / ultra, for exception of shadows that is low, render sampling native, char model limit / quality medium and reflections none. On the checkboxes everything is checked for exception of depth blur (im not a too big fan of depth blur in games)

I did try the security feature as well after your suggestion, sadly without luck, however after that i did some research and i did find a post that all the 2023 drivers of amd are unstable atm for the rx6000 series and 7000 series so eventually i did try  the amd adrenaline 22.11.1 driver of November 2022, and it seems like this driver runs stable, i am running gw2 now for 3,5 hours straight without any crashes, so i think its kind of safe to say that its fixed🙂

Should have tried that driver before, but instead of that i reverted 1 version back, but at least im glad that it seems fixed now.

Thank all for thinking with me here to fix the issue 🙂

Nice.  Glad to hear you found a solution.

It's really unfortunate there's this bad timing going on between recent Windows updates, hardware drivers, and GW2 migrating to DX11 at the same time.  Makes it difficult to isolate the real culprit.

@Chaba.5410 Yeah it is, but its also kind a weird that on my old  gtx 760 it ran perfect after dx11 was out of beta, and on the rx6750xt it has issues, so yeah its really amd driver related i guess, at least im glad i have a stable version now, i will also make a system recovery backup today to make sure that if things break again i can revert back xD

Even the newer Nvidia stuff seems to be having issues too so not too weird.  xD
