Dragonhunters should receive a rework and name change

Now have all of the bad dragons have been defeated, there are no dragons left to be hunted, which leaves Dragonhunters in a weird place balance-wise. I suggest that the profession be reworked to better reflect the career changes that many Dragonhunters have had to undertake as a result of the game's story progression. For example, with their expertise in hunting large, powerful, mythical animals, Dragonhunters have found good employment as cryptobotanists, hunting other mythical animals (like horses). Others have taken up work as information security specialists given the proliferation of jade tech. I find that thematically it doesn't really make sense to have Dragonhunters as an elite spec, as the profession has been largely obsoleted in the game lore.

Dragon hunters are not the same as elder dragon hunters and no one says there are no dragons left, only no elder dragons. Saltspray dragons are still dragons. So are Skyscales for that matter. I don't think Dragon Hunter was ever really meant to mean elder dragons in the first place.

If someone is a dragon hunter and manages to kill off all the dragons, does it make him lose his title?

Do deadeyes should only have one eye coz one is dead? Mirage is only a clone or doesn't exist? Mesmer is this irl illusionist name, why every illusionist in Tyria names their profession after irl human? Why Virtuoso is using dagger and in battlefield no less instead of performing and playing music on the scene? Am I a ghost if I play Specter? I should be, it is in the name. Does charr Renegade still serve the Legions, or should he be hunted down and killed?

It's only a name in some game. Braham is named Dragonhunter and yet he haven't killed any in my playthrou. There are way more interesting matters fir anet to take care of imo.

According to the wiki

The Dragonhunter name was inspired by medieval witch hunters. Guardians consider themselves protectors of the innocent, and the dragonhunter faction believes justice is the eradication of dragons and their minions.

So does that make them similar to the Spanish Inquisition? I certainly wasn’t expecting the Tyrian Inquisition…

Etymologically the definition of hunt is to pursue or track down. What you do next: kill, capture or whatever is a different action not necessarily related to the first.
For example Tornado Hunters don't go around killing Tornadoes (it's actually quite the opposite), but go there to film them.
Also, as someone else has already pointed out, dragons are not extinct.

Pretty sure that there is a reason behind the guild name "Dragon Watch", since our hobby is dragonwatching (something similar to birdwatching I supposse) a dragonhunter is very useful there.

I think it's fine. At least it has a kind of hunter feel, and I suppose if anything is qualified to hunt dragons it would be some sort of angel-Guardian-thing.

The EoD specs have far worse names. Harbinger harbinges nothing. Untamed clearly tamed something. Willbender doesn't bend anything and is more physical than willful. Virtuoso is as skillful and subtle as throwing a knife block at someone, not a musician-mindmage thing. Catalyst barely catalyzes anything.

For real! EOD has some of the worst, oddly obtuse class names I've seen in any game.

What does a vindicator have to prove anyway? Should we be looking into their pasts and keeping a closer eye on their extracurricular activities? Oh wait, they jump really high; that must mean they're absolved. Somehow.

Oh yes, how could I forget Vindicator. I guess it implies "Validation in the face of adversity...and also revenge". I would maybe grant the name if it had more of a "Relic Knight" vibe and used the spear and urn more. But it doesn't, it just has pretty generic skills: Shiro dashes, Glint AoE plops, perhaps the most generic stunbreak in the game. Such a boring, low-effort design.

Anyone else remember when a main complaint about DH at release was its name? Guys, it's not changing. There are bigger fish to fry here.

Wasn't the situation where i think it was Karl from Anet that even stated that DH were based on witch hunters and made players more confused???

it's just a shame that a Dragon Hunter only has one longbow skill with range 1500 where the ranger has like 4 of them. That alone would make Rangers better dragon hunters.

Haha! I bet that would go over well.

Me: *falls off skyscale after it gets skewered by an arrow* "Hey! What did you do that for?"

DH: "It's in the name, dude. Live with it. I have to."

I don't know, Dragonhunter traps are a lot cooler looking and more fun than ranger traps though. It's not mainly a bow that makes a dragon hunter.
