Key Bindings : Alt +2 for Utility doesn't work

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I tried to do some new key bindings and while experimenting, i came upon a rather strange bug.

I have my movement keys on : zqsd ( or wasd )

My weapon spells are on 12345

My utility skills are on Alt + 1 2 3 4 5

However, when I press Alt + 2 alone, my utility work, but when I press Forward + Alt + 2, it doesn't work anymore. ( Z + Alt + 2 )
I have to stop pressing "Z" (my forward key) in order to cast my second utility and it doesn't happen with other ones that seems to work properly.

I checked every key binding possible, I even did most unbinding on keys within the settings panel (Nearly empty everywhere) and there's not a single key binding using that one or even "Alt" (Primary or Secondary)

Any idea please ?

(EDIT : I'm on Windows 10)

I have an AMD Radeon, I'll check for other programs in the meantime, if there's another solution, would be cool please. (I'll update if it's that)

EDIT : Not AMD software neither, it would also conflit with Z + Alt + 1 or Z + Alt + 3 but it doesn't. It's really weird

Some keys share the same circuit. Old and cheap keyboards for example can't press wasd at the same time, whereas gaming keyboards specifically have wasd on their own. Verify your keyboard is capable of pressing z and 2:

However, if something has those key combinations reserved, it'll have the same problem, so you'd need a clean OS to be 100% sure.

Are you using any app that can run in background or/and can place an overlay while you are playing GW2 like Steam or Discord? Check those if you have set up any key binding that might also use ALT key for controlling those apps and overlay.

EDIT: Also never use ALT+ F4 as that will close any running app in MS Windows. ALT key should be used with care as that is part of some MS Windows shot cuts (google to make sure which combination you can use that isn't related to MS Windows).

If you are using a gaming mouse or gaming key board, then you must also check what limitation those apps for controlling key bindings have.

Logitech as an example changed (to prevent) that user could lock them self out of controlling left click, so you can not set LMB to anything else then default usage.

Thanks for the tip, I searched through discord and found nothing, but I think my problem is my keyboard. Thanks for the help tho

Thanks for the link, it's funny, i tried some combinations and I can't press W and S at the same time with a third combination (most letters next to it such as E, R, etc) I can simultaneously press AWD, but not add S, or ASD, but not W, I also tried Alt + W + 2 and it doesn't recognize the "2", but it does work with the "1" and "3" next to it, might be my keyboard I guess that sucks.

Sorry for using the monster reborn card on this topic but i`m having a similar issue. I use an m15 r6 alienware and suddenly the 3rd keybind works randomly but weirdly it never fails on other applications or in chat.  Any good ideas ?

You are talking about a gaming laptop with integrated key board (M15 R6 Alienware).

(A) Rule out software or hardware issue - connect an external USB keyboard

Try to connect an USB keyboard to see if it related to software or hardware when you press that key bind or key combination.

Guild Wars 2 can accept up to three key as combination in in game command for sending commands for actions in game. It means you can combine two modification keys like SHIFT+ALT as both work as modifiers and need a alphanumeric key to work.

The main issue here is that MS Windows make use of some shortcut keys as default and most apps that run in background including web browser also have their own shortcuts (which is the same as GW2 commands that you set up in Options>Controls) that can be active depending if that app is running to interpret your input as an action that are going to that app (or MS OS) or if it going to be for input into GW2 when that is the front app (if you use GW2 in Windowed mode - GW2 in Fullscreen will mean that it is the only app and you can only change between apps with ALT+TAB, if it is true Fullscreen in Graphic settings for GW2).

As I explained in my post above ALT key where the second key modifier that have been added on computer keyboard after SHIFT and CAPS LOCK. Those modifiers can easy get into trouble if you by accident make use of F4 (which is used to control commands for Professional skills in GW2 by default).

You need to look at what combination that you have set up for 3rd keybind in GW2 Controls and make sure that no other apps like Discord (in case you use Discord and have it running in background or use its overlay), the same for Steam (as it also have an overlay that you can control with keybinds, meaning it will "listen" to your keyboard input while in another app like games) and the same for any other app that are running at the same time as GW2.

(B) Try to clarify which in game command you talk about and what key you are pressing

Also, please, explain what is your 3rd keybind as it doesn't tell us any ting about which key you are trying to press to send an in game command as 3rd keybind.  All I can guess it that you mean by the "3rd keybind" that it is "strafe left" that can be seen in this image on wiki.

https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Options#Control_Options

In that case it will also depend if you are using Action Camera or Tab target for controlling your camera and character. Strafe work different depending on which camera mode you make use of and it might be better to use "turn" instead for movement to move left or right.

(C) Hardware failure on laptop keyboards

If it is related to your hardware, then it can be that your physical keys have collected dust or it is something that are preventing you from sending a signal (electronically - as keyboards are literally switches where you create a circuit when you press a key).

From images it looks like Alienware make use of very flat key caps, which could mean that those keys have a very low distance to register a key press. The aren't true mechanical keyboards, but often a kind of hybrid where you have some kind of haptical feedback (more then rubber based keyboards).

My own Lenova (gaming laptop with key board that looks very much like this) had also some issues which seem to be fixed by cleaning with vacuum cleaning and some cloths that have been drenched in antistatic spray to remove possible particles that can be accumulated in between gaps between key caps and that part that let you see background light from below of each key.

Be careful to not use to much humidity on cloth as you don't want to have your keyboard to short circuit and use your vacuum cleaner with a  soft brush and some careful adjustment for how hard it will suck air while cleaning to not have too much pressure on each key.

Leave your key board and laptop off for a while to let it dry properly before you use it!
