Thief Build Advice!

So I recently hit 80 and beat the main story with my thief mostly with ahem gun's blazing (Pistol/Pistol and Dagger/Dagger on enemies that reflect projectiles!) I think my trait's were critical strikes/Deadly Art's/And Acrobatic's (Mostly to help underwater!) Now I've since started living world season 1 I was wondering what some good utilities and trait's would be for a condition build I bought a full set of Dire Exotic Armor, Weapon's (Same as when leveling), Carrion Ring's, and I think something similar for accessories and amulet all exotic quality those were the most I could ahem afford.

are you looking only for a core build or elite specs (+weaponmaster) too?
do you want to play with specific weapon combinations?

one should keep in mind that overall for story / general Open World (not solo legendaries) usually power builds are better as conditions take a while to ramp up.

condition builds usually use:

  • Trickery: for expertise and up to +15% condition damage from lead attacks. optional boonrip, quick pockets, ini on steal  and boons on steal are also great, especially solo.
  • Deadly Arts: for poison on steal + stronger poison traits
  • (defensive option) Shadow Arts: cleanse on stealth, initative on stealth and leeching venoms for some minor poison damage + tons of heals

specific traits in trickery/deadly arts may depend on how you want to play it.
utilities are as the name implies for utility, i would advise to explore them all and switch them around depending on situation. when no utility is needed you can however go for damage utilities: spider venom , skale venom, devourer venom (with deadly arts).  these are better when in group but when running with shadow arts' leeching venom trait, these will help you with sustain too.  caltrops and prepare thousand needles are awesome for damage but only on stationary targets - unlike venoms these work against groups.

Well I was mostly planning on going specter just because I've always been partial to darkness/dark magic/shadow's/etc. From what I saw specter was better as condition yeah? I've been using mostly venom with the leeching venom trait I just wasn't sure as I mostly just winged it as I went. I've been using Dagger/Dagger and Pistol/Pistol and those are the weapon's I bought exotic's for as well. (I do realize eventually I'll have to swap either a dagger or pistol out for a scepter.)

Specter player here. If you're buying exotics off TP, I suggest buying carrion and work your way to making Viper's. You can keep your carrion rings and amulet (if you need vitality) but the remainder of your trinkets should move towards Viper's too.

You're correct in your assumption that Specter plays better as condi, and the scepter is a really fun weapon with both pistol and dagger. I personally roam wvw using scepter/dagger with torment and malice sigils, and then sword/dagger with cleanse and energy sigils.

This build works great for pve too, whether instanced content or just open world.

I kind of need Scepter/Pistol in our matches but Sc/Dagger would give Shadowsquall a better rate. How does Sc/D feel in a moving fight aside from its swiftness?

I have a template for condi and one for mostly healing and group defense. Viscerally, I like playing condi heavy more, you can kind of feel the fast crunchiness and especially if you're weaponizing a handful of legit shooters or aoe with Rot Wallow Venom (lighting up whoever has Dragon Banner can be wild). I play the same way with both templates since you're deciding on ally or enemy targets on the fly for whatever buff or debuff you need in the moment.

significantly less clunky than sc/p because of the forced movement on sc 3. You can run around sniping people if/when required, then jump into your shroud to cleanse condis and just tank damage when you see someone coming to burst you.

I like that movement on sc/p #3 though. That's pretty often how I keep from getting ran over by a zerg and to stay ahead of my team. I should try sc/d again with increased run speed and see how that feels. Thanks.

Shadowstep is a great way to engage/disengage from groups, particularly so when paired with Blinding Powder. You get tons of synergy when used with Specter eSpec because of the barrier you gran/get from stealth. Lots of fun to be had if you get accustomed to reading pushes from groups of enemies, and knowing when to port out. the S/D combo is also good for porting around because you can use sword 2 without selecting an enemy to essentially get a free port and cleasnse to that specific spot too. These are are just a few tools to help with your positioning.

Well of Gloom is quite underrated as well, and is a short gap closer (or gap-maker, if you're trying to escape). It's often just enough to make people stop wanting to chase you. It also serves as a decent healing skill now because of the heal-per-tick increase they gave it a few patches ago.
