Yolanda Hardass.8045
if you press enter, it should bring up the chat window. If you then click on the green text that says "Say" (the text right next to the small arrow there) it will bring up a list of channels you can select to chat on like team, squad, party etc. Hope this helps. Trise.2865
/say is a local chat, it broadcasts to a specific radius around you. Local chat text is green./map broadcasts to most of the map. Map chat text is red.Guild Wars 2 has customizable chat channels. If, for some reason, you're not seeing either red or green text, press backslash "\" to open the chat dialogue box (hidden by default). Click the arrow on one of the tabs. A number of checkboxes or "toggles" will appear. Make sure that Local and Map are checked. Now, whenever you're using that specific chat channel, both of those chats will appear to you. Alternatively, you can use the Gear, Settings, on the top-left to create a new chat channel and customize it.PS: Regards to searching for a Guild: These forums have a Looking for Guild section where guilds and new members can seek each other out. I would suggest looking there as well.

Free accounts are somewhat limited in regards to chat, and cannot send messages to Map chat.https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Account#Free_accounts
Eruaph.4039
Have you purchased either of the expansions? If you are on a 'free' account I believe that certain chat functions are restricted until you do (To prevent gold sellers just making lots of free accounts to spam us with). Tekoneiric.6817
/l for local to the area you are in and /m for map wide. Sometimes people are chatty but much of the time people are too focused on whatever they are doing.
Ardenwolfe.8590
Agreed. Sounds like you have map chat turned off. Otherwise, yes, a free account has limited settings as far as /map.
DeanBB.4268
I see map chatter wherever I go. I also see people interacting, including answering questions that are asked.
Lee.5746
thanks guys that was the problem, I just bought path of fire expansion and now it works! thank you for all the very quick help
Deadly Moonshiner.1354
I suggest you check what chat channels are enabled on the chat tab. It looks to me that you don't have the map chat enabled.Click on the tab options (little down pointing triangle on each chat tab) and there you can set what chats are visible in that particular chat tab.
