What's the difference between the Watchwork Portal Device and the White Mantle Portal Device?

Recommended Posts

We actually have four portable gizmo-versions of portals:

1.) Watchwork Portal Device

  • single use/consume
  • short cooldown
  • user creates an entry and an exit

2.) Twisted Watchwork Portal Device

  • single use/consume
  • short cooldown
  • user creates only an entry
  • upon use, you get teleported to a random location in tyria

3.) White Mantle Portal Device

  • infinite use/consume
  • 30 minutes cooldown
  • user creates an entry and an exit

[EDIT]

4.) Experimental Teleportation Gun

  • single use/consume
  • short cooldown
  • user creates an entry, does a long leap (900 range) and creates an exit upon landing

Small note: the Twisted Watchwork destinations probably aren't entirely random. They seem to take you to a 'map completion' location, e.g. vista, POI, WP, and perhaps things like JP (start only; I haven't heard anyone getting taken to a chest). Understandably, there's relatively little comprehensive "drop rate" data on them.

They are, however, a potential source of great fun. Every December, they are mystaple gift choice, along with a jumping-enabled tonic and my Annual Wintersday challenge:

  • Get on a lowbie toon (ideally a newly created one, if possible).
  • Pop the twisted portal.
  • Use the tonic.
  • Return safely to LA without using any WPs or mesmer portals.

It's harder than it sounds, depending on where you land.

@Oglaf.1074 said:It is my understanding that they function entirely differently:

Watchwork will take you to a random area of the game.

White Mantle will emulate a Mesmer portal.

This should be clear by the first response, but I'll reiterate: the random destination one is the Twisted Watchwork Portal Device. There is a "regular" Watchwork Portal Device that emulates the mesmer portal in consumable form. The (much) later added White Mantle Portal Device is the same, but infinite use.
