Profession suggestion for a returning player

Hi! The title says it but not all of it ^^ I'm a returning player with the love for MMOs rekindled within his heart. My only 80 is thief and I do not own neither HoT nor PoF (i'm not f2p though).I'm actually looking for a good soloing class since I do not have any friends (that I remember of at least) and visuals are important, it gotta be cool!I was thinking about Guardian (blue fiery melee fighter, zealot, burner of heretics) and Ranger (I've always liked the idea of being the archer, plus i think it's very effective in WvW but IDK about PvP, though i really do not enjoy the pets, just leave me alone animal!)You can also suggest me a class out of these 2 ofc. I generally focus on PvE (like the filthy casual I am, I don't even raid, maybe i will) but I also play WvW and PvP too, and I'm thinking about buying the expecs when it goes on sale or my country stops being a "trump hole" and our gdp can stand against the almighty euro ^^Thanks in advance, you stopping by here, reading through all this gibberish and giving me your humble opinion is very nice of you ^^

Guardian is my main and Ranger was my second creation, so nice choices! Honestly, I find the Guardian to be a great and diverse option for Core Tyria. There's a variety of weapon choices and play styles. The Guardian holds up well in PvE, especially in Core Tyria, but that will translate out to either expansion if/when you pick them up. The elite specializations available via the expansions are both competitive. If you're not a fan of pets, I'd avoid going Ranger. You'll be limiting yourself significantly.

If you want looks then go with light armor profession as they have definitely the best looking armor sets. Medium armor is the hands down worst but heavy armor have some decent sets (not as wide choice of cool looking armor as light but much better then medium).

For solo'ing Ranger is hands down best no question asked. Necromancer is right there but only if you own PoF and take scourge elite specialization. Otherwise mobs will take too long to kill, not viable for pve and fast world map completition (if you are going for that).

For guardian, just keep in mind that its only tanky when you give him soldier's gear, in berserker gear it has very low health and poor survivability in open-world content. You can't expect to solo a champion with him as you would do with a ranger or scourge easily.

Pets for core ranger carry probably at least half of your damage, so if you don't like pets, I'd stay away from ranger. One downside to Guardians is that they have no 'faster movement skill' like rangers or necros...or pretty much every other class. You're going to constantly depend on using one shout or another, or staff 3, to give you swiftness to move around the maps. Whereas with necro, you just put signet of the locust on and it passively grants you 25% movement speed.

I have both ranger (2 actually) and guardian, with both HoT and PoF. I like core guardian so much that I still haven't tried out the two elite specs for it, even though they're fully unlocked and I have even completed the HoT elite weapon collection.

@Renegade.6240 said:Hmm I'm actually surprised, generally in your classiacal MMO, the tank would be a better self-sustaining class so soloing bosses would be easier but the archet being the easiest soloing class has really surprised me. GW2 is not your classical MMO though is it :D

No traditional class triangle here, there are no exclusive tanks, healers or DPSers, it all depends on the build you run and almost all classes can cover all roles to a certain extent (obviously with some exceeding at it over the others). Guardian spesifically I think has the second top DPS in the game with Dragonhunter HoT spec, second only to Staff Ele and Firebrand the PoF spec is a nice all rounder that exceeds in support. As for which to pick I would definetely go with Guardian, it's more diverse than Ranger and Firebrand spesifically probably has the best visuals in the game.
