New to WvW. Could really use some advice.

I got my brother into this game recently. And he LOVES doing WvW (although we're both terrible at it) So I've been trying to do WvW with him. But I'm finding this game-mode confusing, and have a couple questions..

1) How do you find out where everybody is and what they're doing? There are these massive groups that seem to be operating on the same page. But the text-chat is empty, and so is the LFG panel. How do you get hooked up with these big groups when you enter the zone?

2) Can anybody recommend any good guides on the basic objectives/strategy of WvW? And finally...

3) Can anybody recommend any good guides on how to play a thief in WvW? I've done PvE since I started playing the game. And this is a totally new play-style that I'm terrible at. I'd like to get better :p

Thanks!

Most servers have a community teamspeak or discord that they advertise in-game and is where they do that coordination outside of text chat. Try to ask for your server's platform in-game.

Thief is usually relegated to a type of playstyle called "roaming" and not so much the massive group zerg fights you are asking about. Thieves pick off reinforcements, pick of players far out of position from their zerg, flip camps and kill supply yaks.

nsp needs you and your bro.

for tips, check metabattle.com knowing a basic build will allow you to speed up your experience and then you practice and make iterations on your own. =)

You won't be suited for zergs on a thief unless you're very confident in your skills and understand more about zerg combat and how your server leaders play. As mentioned above, most people communicate with voice chat. If you intend to blob, you'll probably want to play another class as a newer player to WvW. I say this as a thief; unless you make a show out of yourself by really performing excellently and making big plays, most blob commanders will be actively upset you're bringing a thief to a zerg fight if you go down often. Sometimes it only takes one person to lose an entire 50v50. So be mindful of the choices you make. Nobody will be outspoken against trying to help, but dying can cause enemy downs who hit you to rally which can turn the tables in really close fights. So if a comm says to reroll or leave, please do so/take secondary objectives like camps.

As for playing one itself, the #1 priority of any thief in the PvP formats is to learn all of the other professions, first, as to be able to properly counter them.

I'd ask in map/team chat for a guild to join as a new wvw player for what server you're on (not your host if you have a host server). I imagine someone will reach out to help you out better.

Just respect what the commanders have to say and you'll be okay. Some are more responsive to allowing others participate while not playing WvW-specific classes or builds, but if they're adamant (usually due to close fights or losing), respect their call and go experiment and roam about.

At its core, it's all just capture and hold. Keeps/towers upgrade to become more defensible over time based on supply deliveries via dolyaks from surrounding camps. Supply is used to make siege to attack enemy structures or defend your own, so camps are important as a resource. That said, each world gains points based on what they capture after every tick (when the timer goes to 0) and based on player kills. Most points here over a period (longer timer called a skirmish) wins the skirmish, and those skirmish points are added up over the course of the week. Camps are worth few points, while towers and keeps are worth increasingly more, so while camps fuel everything, maintaining keeps and towers and killing enemies while not dying is what scores the big points for each skirmish.

Whatever you do, don't use your PvE build in WvW. It will not end well for you. Ask for build advice for that either in the respective profession sections or by asking players/commanders/guilds in WvW for links to the builds they run. Again, joining a guild will help a lot here.

The only time I intentionally played a thief with a zerg was when I was playing with the intent of squirreling to pull enemy zerglings off their commander to both weaken their numbers and also kill them stragglers that couldn't help chasing the squishy thief. As a thief you excel mostly as a camp flipper and scout hunter. They make great keep tappers too if you are trying to slow the flow of enemy reinforcements.
