Download speed SO SLOW!

Ok so... I'm getting really frustrated. I just purchased GW2 with POF and HOT together this morning, downloaded the client and started the game download. My download speed fluctuates from 600kb to 0kb/sec. Over the past hour, it's gone up 3%. Is this just a VERY large download or is there something else going on? I read somewhere else that I may need a VPN, which I purchased, but that hasn't helped with the speed at all. I changed the assets in the target to assets from my state (WA). I am at the point where I am about to ask for a refund and I really don't want to do that, but this wait is ridiculous. Any help/tips are appreciated :)

EDIT to add that my internet speeds are running at 60mbps

Generally the support is very good. They fixed this issue for on the previous game build. But now i have the same issues as you. Waiting for their response to my ticket. I think they might suggest a new download server to connect to, to which i dont know the IP yet (as they suggested with the previous patch).

I did a repair of the file. Make a shortcut if you haven't done so already and add
-repairto the target in the shortcut properties. This solution doesn't work perfectly, but I went from only getting 0-500kb/sec to 2-3mb/sec. So it will help. Took me a good 2 days to download the whole game =/

Eek. -repair crashes my client.

The normal client downloads 90mb every 1.5min, consistently. Shenanigans are afoot..

*edit;unfortunately, the solution appears to be renaming the gw2.dat file to gw2old.dat and redownload the game. It'll be faster as long as the same problem doesn't arise when I hit PoF content.

**Started old behavior around 27% :/back to old .dat file

I ended up making a script that restarts the launcher every 30s, but now I'm convinced it's not downloading 90mb every time. With 700 relaunches it should have downloaded 64gb, but It's looking more like 3-4gb. :\ 17600 files down to 14764

Any suggestions? Changing -assertserv ips doesn't seem to work; nor does -repair flag. Nor clientPort

This only seems to happen while downloading specific content.

GW2 deals in many smaller files. When it's having to download thousands of files that are only a few KB, it has a lot of overhead, so it'll never be able to reach your raw speed. GW2 is also having to manage Gw2.dat and verify compressed files, which further limits your speed since it'll pause to do that instead of continuing to download more files. Besides that, the only other difference with specific content is if you're the first one to download something, since the server you're connecting to has to download it from ArenaNet first, but that's not really noticeable unless they're having problems.

Try rebooting into safe mode with networking to potentially stop most software from interfering (msconfig > boot > safe boot with network under it). Under safe mode, try launching Gw2.exe directly to see if it's better, then try using the option:-log -assetsrv 64.25.41.2

That server is located in Texas, so it may be a bad option depending on how far away you are, but it's ArenaNet's primary server so it's guaranteed to work if you're NA. The -log option will record what it's actually doing, so after a few minutes, check the log file (%appdata%/Guild Wars 2/Gw2.log) for any errors.

Understandable, although inconsistent speed is not the issue. The issue involves the launcher disconnecting after downloading "90MBs", then waiting 1-2min before retrying. If I rename Gw2.dat to Gw2old.dat, then restart the launcher, the download starts to work as expected until, what I assume, the launcher starts to download specific content, which probably means the content is coming from a different server, or is in a different format.

I gave this a go, and it resulted in the same behavior.

The only resulting error is an HTTP request timeout. Here is the log, if you're interested.

All of the logs are showing that it's timing out while trying to request a single file, which is 89.6 MB. If you were not able to actually connect to the patch server like it's saying, it should show the connection error message and no progress would be made (the launcher downloads several files at once). Since you can wipe Gw2.dat and make progress however, you are able to connect, so the problem is with the specific file. Ensure that you don't have any software that blocks websites based on their URL, including your router. Running under safe mode should have disabled almost all 3rd party software, though some firewalls are really hooked in and will only make it worse under safe mode. If you're not running anything like that, then your ISP is likely the cause, which will require using a VPN to patch.

You can test it by opening the file in your browser, which is:http://assetcdn.101.arenanetworks.com/program/101/1/0/1757741/compressed

To test that you can actually access the patch server:http://assetcdn.101.arenanetworks.com/latest64/101

Windows firewall rules are open for the Guild Wars 2 client (udp/tcp), and I don't believe I have any other program that blocks internet traffic. No luck with turning the windows firewall off either. My router will block inbound traffic from IPs outbound traffic did not go to. My router is also connected to an apartment building network, although I don't believe they block internet access -- not certain though. Also, the behavior persists, if I connect my computer directly to the apartment building network. Not sure about the building's ISP.

You can test it by opening the file in your browser, which is:http://assetcdn.101.arenanetworks.com/program/101/1/0/1757741/compressedThis file hangs at the end, for about 2mins, but it does finish downloading; perhaps it's timing out before finishing with the launcher?

To test that you can actually access the patch server:http://assetcdn.101.arenanetworks.com/latest64/101successful, get 20082594 1854295 32826536 1854288 10604

http://origincdn.101.arenanetworks.com/latest64/101as above, so below82594 1854295 32826536 1854288 10604

Thanks again!

**Using a VPN solved the issue. An unfortunate solution. : (

After a little experimenting, the launcher will time out after about 60 seconds of no data transferred and although it does know the file size, it won't report it in the log, just like yours. If it paused for 2 minutes, then that's likely the problem. Do your larger downloads normally pause (92 MB)? Skipping ahead, a VPN will probably fix it, which would imply that something along the line was monitoring your traffic. There are many free ones you could try, tunnelbear being the last I saw recommended.

You could try using my alternative patcher, but it's only going to help if slow downloads are your only problem. It's primary purpose is to allow you to download patches anywhere and bring them back to host your own asset server for GW2 to use. Simply run through the steps in order, or you could skip to the patch step and allow it to download as it goes. Since pausing is a problem, adjust the connection timeout accordingly under the step for downloading updates. When patching, if a warning pops up about skipping uncompressed files, those are what GW2 falls back to when a request fails, so you will want to close GW2 and start it again to get it to re-request the compressed version.
