About Stereoscopic Snapshot Function?

Ok, I just recently (yesterday) saw this function was available in the options and I wanted to see what happened when I used it. When I opened the jps file I got 2 images of the same snapshot side-by-side and that got me to investigate, what was that for?

I then understood that stereoscopic pictures were used to fake 3d sometimes by using some methods but, everything seems to require certain special optic tricks and/or special lenses, so that got me wondering: Is there a way to use those files, using only software, to produce content? Like maybe a software that opens said file extensions, or mixes the two images so that I can see the results? What kind of content and how can I produce with this resource?
