What to salvage with which kit and what to sell?

Recommended Posts

You won't go wrong salvaging EVERYthing using the cheapest kit you have. It may not always be the absolute best choice, but it will almost never be the wrong choice. Particularly at your level where crafting materials are more valuable.

If you want to waste some time, you can check the TP prices for rares or exotics and see if it's worth selling them.

Blues & Greens (any level):Salvage only. Use copper-fed or basic kits (if you have free crude kits, that's okay too).

Rares

  • If L68+, salvage with using silver-fed or Mystic kits (or Master's Kit). (You can choose to sell Greatswords, Staffs, and Swords, too, at near lowest-sell price, if you have time.)
  • L67 or less: most people salvage with copper-fed/basic, but I'd recommend selling if you can get 10s+.

Exotics

  • Weapons: Sell
  • L68+ armor: sell if you can get at least 30s. Otherwise salvage with silver-fed/mystic/master kit.
  • L67 or lower armor: sell if you can get at least 20s. Otherwise salvage with copper-fed/basic.

Bags of Unidentified Gear

  • Never ever salvage
  • Always sell unless
  • You can (a) maximize your Magic Find and (b) have the time and inclination to open them with super high MF. This takes a long time, but is more profitable than any farm that helped you acquire the loot. But: boring for most people. (The rule of thumb for this gear used to be very different, then the economy changed.)

PS when I say "sell," I always mean choose a price near the lowest sale offer. Never insta-sell to the highest buyer, not if you're interested in "what is better" financially.

What about Trophies? Salvage or destroy?

Which do you mean? Most "trophies" are considered 'junk' that sells when you press 'Sell Junk' at a vendor. If you mean drops labeled 'salvage items', roughly the same rules of thumb apply:

  • Blues/Greens: salvage all, along with the gear
  • Rares: it's worth selling any that are worth more than 10s. I'd use a basic/copper-fed on those worth less. (There are people who have more complicated rules for these; this is a guideline for the rest of us.)

Just a couple of other options--

Salvaging an exotic with a Black Lion salvage kit will often give you dark matter, which you may need if you're planning to craft ascended gear. (You can get dark matter at a lower rate with regular kits, or from salvaging ectoplasm directly.) And some of the runes/sigils you get back from them may be as valuable, or even more so, than the original item.

And if you have a taste for gambling, some people toss less valuable exotics into the Mystic Forge, in the hope of getting a skin they haven't unlocked yet, or even a precursor. Unlike the gambling with rares, you are at least guaranteed to get an exotic back.

That's a bit misleading. To be fair, the most notable example is a recent change: salvaging unidentified gear containers is always financially worse than selling them, a lot worse. There are other, older examples where the choice of kit matters and the where the difference between choosing to sell vs salvaging makes a difference to one's wallet.

If one is interested in extracting the most profit for the least effort, then it matters a lot to spend a few extra seconds salvaging vs selling some items, and being careful about the choice of kit. If the goal is to expend the least effort, regardless of the income, then sure, salvage everything. But that's true by accident: salvage-all is simply faster than anything else by default.

All good points.

You need to consider the cost of time, both to the human player IRL as well as the in-game time of sorting inventory vs. doing another fractal or whatever. Salvaging is so close to ideal that IMO it's always worth it, especially if you're doing some Diablo-esque speed farming like with a guild group or something. You've also got the convenience of having all your crafting mats full so you can insta-make the next legendary or whatever comes up. I don't care about the price of ectos because I'm waiting to see how cool the legendary GS will be.

If you need a breather, figuring out your inventory could be it.
