Entering Guild Wars 2, my impressions after the tragedy of Bless Online!

Guild Wars 2 was a game I tried to like, quite a few times but it just didn’t grab me. Up until now that is.

I’ve been on an MMO phase recently, getting back to WoW even leveling a new pally to 64, but alas I got bored of it. Then I tried Rift, which I liked but the community wasn’t there. Along came Bless Online and it was supposed to be the next big thing. Supposed to be, being the keywords here. I tried it and to be honest I liked what I played but in between constant bugs and paying 40 dollars for something I could not play (9 hours game time, with about 2 being actual playing) I decided to get a refund and look elsewhere. Then somehow Guild Wars 2 comes along onto my plate and I gave it a shot. GW2 never gelled with me, I don’t know what it was, but it just didn’t seem like my kind of game. I decided to try it out anyways.

That brings me to right now, and I’m enjoying the hell out of it, I’ve kind of accepted the fact that most MMO’s now are full of single players just going about their business. This however does not remain true with GW2 for the most part, people are just going about their business doing their own quests, BUT now other people are doing it with them, and the need to ask to join up isn’t there. Again you still are helping each other though. Interesting enough the way GW2’s quests work aren’t quite like any other MMO I’ve played. Quests are usually kill X amount of this, or grab X, escort that. That remains the same way here, BUT those 3 objectives can be mashed into a single one. Quests here are represented by hearts on the map, telling you where to go. This is unique because people group up and are doing the same thing you are, and you can gain credit by helping others around you, making grouping up kind of a must, kind of forcing you to play with others.

You can join more than one guild at a time too, hopping/representing one to another to join in on the discussions. I’ve met some good people so far this way and by the way of main chat. There are also jumping puzzles here too, tricky platforming to get a good piece of loot. I met someone that stood by me as I failed a jump over and over again but with immense satisfaction as I finally completed it and was awarded with a nice chest of items. I’m in over my head when it comes to customizing my character, I blame WoW for that. There’s a bevy of different skills to choose from, and this is a GREAT thing to have. I haven’t played a game with this much customization since Warcraft initial launched.

The maps in this game are pretty big and varied with TONS of stuff to do in them. For example, maps can have 12 Hearts (quests) 6 Vistas, the camera spins around and shows you an interesting sight. 8 mini boxs (point of interest) 12 checkpoints that you can jump between all of them for a low cost. Finally we have 5 or 6 Hero Point nodes, which usually has you fighting something/one to earn your point. The developers really took the time to make this game shine. Not to forget Jumping Puzzles, they usually go hand in hand with Vistas, an MMO with carefully, sometimes aggravating, timed jumps to get you the reward. Cool Stuff!

I go through spurts of gaming look for the next one that will put me in the zone and overlook anything else that happens to release for months. With Guild Wars 2 I think I’ve finally found that game. I urge everyone to try it. Thank You Bless, you turned me to a forgotten gem that I still have the Heroic version to the left of me in my stand. Here’s hoping I continue to play it.

Thanks for making this thread. It's good to have perspective and periodically remind myself as a primary PVP player that there's a hell of a lot of things Guild Wars 2 does right, and community involvement/incentive on the PVE side is certainly one of them.

Glad you're enjoying the game. See you during my brief excursions out of the mists.

Just wait until you see the expansions. Especially the heart of thorns maps. They are like nothing you've ever seen before. But fair warning, the enemies there don't mess around. Bring a towel to mop up all the blood and tears! And unlike WoW, you can't just out gear open world content here!

I don't want someone here if they don't enjoy the game, and they don't want to be here. We shouldn't be sad they leave to find something they do enjoy better!

Haha he' s right, I remember doing the story in HoT and just kept dying over and over again, until gear simply just broke off my body and I was nearly naked. Right after finishing that story, I had to desperately look for a repair armor anvil lol

At least repairs are free now, back in the day we had to pay ?

That really isn't accurate. Fractals are dungeons by another name. Raids are also a thing here. There are challenge modes, achievements, masteries, legendaries, fractal potions and boosts, etc. I think GW2 has legitimate endgame content. It just doesn't have a gear treadmill. And that is different. Instead of better stats, you go after skins, achievements, potions, boosts and all that. Some people are okay with that. Others find it lacking in structure.

Every new player should know that for 50 Euro you will get 2 years game content. In this 2 year Anet will add another 3 months of game content, more if you buy the next xpac. Lets make a list what a new player should do in these 2 years:

  • Max level meaning soft cap + all masteries
    • Lvl 80 in pvp
    • Lvl 350 in wvw
    • Lvl 100 in fractals, this implies that u have at least a toon full ascended(also implies that having at least 2 crafts at max)
    • 20 k AP to do that you must complete almost all the achievements in the game, events included.
    • 1 legendary weapon gen 1
    • 1 legendary weapon gen 2
    • 1 legendary Armour set (whatever pve, pvp, wvw one). You will have to repeat some of content in order to farm your ascended gear or achievements or levels but it will hardly feel like a grind.....Also very important : a part of buying past Living World chapters, is not required to spend more money.Let's face it GW2 is a good deal.

Best part of about GW2 in this sense, it doesn't have to be a job. It's easy to put down. No subscription. It's easy to pick back up. Your gear is never invalidated. No chasing the treadmill.Keep an eye on the news for events and content releases, and do those when they land, especially Living Story episodes. As long as you log in during their release period (usually 3 months), you have them unlocked for whenever you want to play them.

I guess its hard to get out of that gear/power grind mentality theirs something very satisfying about feeling like your hero is getting strong and stronger as you progress but in GW2 i can go back to areas where i started at lvl 2 and get killed by a champ its just feels weird. all this being said i do look forward to doing the PoF storyline as for me the story is what i enjoy most in the game.

If you want to overpower low level zones completely, and have a constant grind to build your power up, have it reset, then grind again to get back to the same level, this is not the game for you.

There is nothing wrong with that. People like different things, and that is two hundred percent cool. There are plenty of other MMOs that will offer you that exact experience; sadly, for people who prefer the GW2 model you have a choice of approximately one game, but at least it is not zero...

You sir are completely wrong. What are you saying is a lie! You could say you don't like the endgame or it's not what you are expecting, but to say there are no dungeons or no endgame is just a LIE! There are dungeons, raids, fractals, lvl 80 events, metamaps, achievment points, wvw, spvp and other arts of progression. If you don't like it, it is your thing and it is ok, you can search the game you enjoy, but please don't spread lies and be honest! Yes, Guild Wars 2 is kinda different, more friendly and, no, not all people dislike different games. There are enough people, who appreciate the different and innovative way GW2 is aproaching. So be free to choose like others. There is a game for every user on this world. Have a nice day!

Duno about eu, but in na I still see dungeon posts every now and then. And when I post for one, takes about 2-10 min to fill up depending on the time amd dungeon path. There's also raids if you want to get into that, though it's better to do it with a guild than to pug it, especially if you're new.

@op nice post and glad you're ejoying yourself ?. Look forward to trying out hot and pof maps, though be warned about the obs there; they're tougher than all core mobs. Hope you learned to dodge ;)

Fractals are no replacement for dungeons. At first they may look like one, but when you've done a dozen of runs, you see how shallow they are.

You can get some of that kind of experience in fractals. You'd better really be into fractals if you're going to do it, but as you basically need full ascended gear for max level fractals and the only semi-reasonable way of acquiring enough fractal relics for all of the boosts and potions you can buy is getting good enough to do CMs daily. There's a definite progression of sorts, and for most players these top rewards that actually do increase your combat capabilities (but only in fractals!) are beyond the reach of anyone but a die-hard fractal runner. It's sort of like raid-lite.

I don't think raids have much in the way of gear/item progression the way fractals do, but there's legendary armor to craft if you want to go for it and plenty of achievements!

The question is whether that's just too different for you than endlessly upgrading gear every time new content comes out. I mean, I enjoyed that model as well and found this one a little weird and aimless, initially. But there's plenty of depth to combat, to each class and each game mode. If you can work your head around progression in terms of improving your game rather than your gear, you might learn to enjoy several game modes and work on them regularly.

I've been playing 2.5 years and I'm just now starting to get a little more serious about fractals, ran into some guys who have been doing dungeon runs for years and join them now and then as well. I've always loved open world in GW2 and I'm even planning to participate in ranked PvP this season. I guess after playing this game for awhile I've found that I can always find something to do if I look for new things to try.
