TheAgedGnome.7520
I swear that sometimes I activate a tome for a fight I know is upcoming (e.g., escort quests), yet maybe 30-40 sec later when the fight occurs, I realize that my tome is no longer active, as if it had expired somehow and I see the tome cooldown timer is counting down. Is there some automatic expiration timer on active tomes due to inactivity or something like that? I don't see it documented in the wiki, but it sure seems to happen. I.e., I activate the tome, use none of the tome pages while waiting for an upcoming fight, and then notice 30-40 sec later that the tome is no longer active. I just can't figure what is causing the tome to go off of active.
PurebladeProductions.4875
If you're in a sub-level 80 zone, you automatically stow your tomes whenever your effective (downscaled) level changes. Additionally, if this happens without the Loremaster grandmaster trait equipped, you will lose the passive effects of your tomes. You'll only get the passives back when you activate one of your tomes, after mounting and dismounting, or equipping the Loremaster trait and having your effective level changed again. If you do have Loremaster equipped, then your tome passives are removed and immediately reapplied. In both cases, you automatically stow your tome and there's no way that this isn't a bug.A few other elite specs have issues too with effective level changes, most notably Scourges getting all of their sand shades desummoned. Indure.5410
Are you sure this isn't due to weapon stowing? If its 30-45s of you doing nothing your weapons auto-stow. I don't think active skill bars remain if you stow your weapons.

There is no "timeout" from what I've seen.Stowing your current tome, opening another tome, or swapping weapons will cause this. You may be doing one of these without realizing it.Otherwise, mounting will stow your tomes.
TheAgedGnome.7520
Well, of course I haven't been able to replicate the issue since posting about it. That surely means it must have been due to a deep Anet conspiracy, and now all traces of it have been wiped away. Yea...that must be it - it couldn't have been an error on my part. :)
