How is PvP These Days?

I'm looking into potentially getting back into GW2 after a long hiatus. I'm a semi-casual player who enjoys PVP.
I left the game back when warrior/thief were the absolute dominant classes in the game, and most 5v5 teams had at least 2 warriors on them.

As a non-warrior main (mesmer and necro, mostly), I couldn't stand the high mobility/high sustain/high burst that was the warrior meta back in the day.

Have things improved since then?

You're gonna love Spellbreakers.

I'm assuming that Spellbreakers are more of the same. Correct?

ill try to be a little bit helpful,

it still has all three, high sustain, mobility, damage, but so does you're mesmer.. mirage is the dominant spec atm and is literally god tier

That doesn't bode well. I like my cannons made of glass and my tanks shooting peas.

Sounds like it's not worthwhile to come back.

If you are willing to sell yourself out and basically trade wins and manipulate matches with a friend. You can hit the top spots.

If not then it's not worth playing ranked because the cheaters here are neeeeeevvvvveerrr punished unless it's a "ban" minor wrist slap temp ban. Basement kiddos just laugh it off and continue to cheat.

Not really accurate. I have hardly seen any "cheaters", and a very small minority actually match manipulate.

The main issue at hand w/ the game is the complete and utter lack of balance. Many classes are outperforming others by miles; some are sustaining like a bunker whilst dealing damage like berserker builds. Many of the damage skills with the new elite specs have short c/ds and don't really require much strategy or skill to get off.

To top it all off, Anet communicates very poorly to the PvP player base. One is left to simply pray that the next balance patch brings things to an even level - but generally these patches solve nothing and even sometimes make things worse.

So with that being said, if you're willing to go stand on circles and wait for the inevitable 10-20k 4-10 sec c/d damage skill to hit you... or if you're willing to wait balance patch after balance patch just to be repeatedly let down.... come aboard and join us!

The state is a lot worse. If you had trouble vs. Warrior back then (which you shouldn't have because you could dodge count them back in the day) well full counter makes them disgustingly braindead so it enforces a meta that REQUIRES unblockables.

Mesmer is a lot worse right now tho cause they can spam evades while attacking and can NEVER get caught if you weren't a braindead player who cried about old school Warrior. And since you're a Mesmer main you have an easier time facerolling the keyboard because now stuns doesn't even really counter Mesmer anymore. Every time they dodge, they break out of stuns apparently. Their Mirage spec is still anti-fun to go against, so somebody like you might enjoy this game right now and for 4 more months.

But wait, Mirage (mesmer) and Scourge (necro) is a thing in pvp

So... more of the same. I can't believe that warriors are still dominating this game. I think I left ... 5 years ago? And it's still like this?

I can only assume that having an overpowered class is as-designed. It doesn't make much sense to me. In most PVP combat games it makes sense to have a beginner class - one that has a low skill floor, but large payoff. Oftentimes it's an assassin-type class such as a thief, or sometimes a medium armor class. However, the design is to also have a low skill ceiling such that the class cannot excel at higher levels due to a critical limitation.

Wow. That stinks. I think GW2 still has the best PvP game mechanically. It's surprising that poor execution continues to plague it after all these years. And the same problem, too!

As the person who created that vid, it's getting used out of context.

That video was made back in 2017 right after PoF, at that time warrior's full counter had half the CD that it currently has, on top of dealing more damage. This was also before warrior's stances and passive defenses got nerfed on top of a slew of other misc changes.

Warrior right now is very competitive, but it's hardly the dominant class.

Interesting. That's somewhat more positive. I'll pop back in and give things a shot. At the least, there's a lot of fun-looking PVE content that's been added.

I ended up leaving GW2 to go play MOBAs simply because they had better balance. And, even if one class (or profession/champion/god/etc.) was OP in a MOBA, you could ban it in the game, which is really helpful.

It would be interesting to see something like that in GW2 - ban a calling/profession. It would force the players to have a wider knowledge base than just 1 class, and mix things up a bit.
