Masterwork gear sell or salvage

Its never worth selling on the TP, and there is an equilibrium with vendor prices when the material value is on the low side. However, its still recommended to salvage most items because there is a chance for getting T6 mats out of lvl 80 items (with bigger gear pieces yielding multiples), and those will at least break even in cost. If you "really" wanna min/mix profit, then you'll have to sit down and do the math for each type of gear; based on what materials it outputs, quantities, % rate of up tier salvage, the value of T5 vs T6, vendor value of runes, and the calculated average rates of your output.

Every time I've ever bothered to do it, hands down any potential material output with low value is not worth flipping on the TP. You can either vendor or salvage, but any profit you might make will likely not break even if you need to buy those mats later. Its overall more productive to salvage and process those materials (like mithrilium, spiritwood sap, or Mystic Curios) for later use, and sit on the excess for a price spike to sell on. Theres also an effort to sink surplus materials during festivals, which can be made into something more useful or rolling on a rare item (see 4 Winds).

In the current market the only items that might make significant over vendor is leather armor pieces, because T6 leather is still very expensive. But given the prices on the TP, you're still better off salvaging itself, and crafting on it later.

@KuRupT.3512 said:So I’ve read multiple old post that have said to salvage masterwork gear.... but it only gives mats that generally sell for less than the actual gear. Am I missing something? Seems better to just sell to vendor. Or is there some masterwork worth selling on TP? Im very confused

Salvage any white, blue and green gear for materials, blue and green for luck (!), and sell the minor runes/sigils to a merchant. :+1:

yea I have been salvaging white, blue, and green gear with copper fed kit and yellow gear with silver fed kit. any exotic gear I get, I set aside for other characters I am still leveling. yellow pieces I look at their prices on TP and sell if higher than ecto, though i cant think of any time when that was the case. I sell sigils and runes on TP if higher than vendor value (considering the tax).

out of curiosity, what does one do when you get exotic gear? salvage and sell? or just sell on TP? or something else?

There are some spreadsheets you can use to answer the question to the copper, even taking into account your time. When you look at them, you'll see that, indeed, some mat prices are so low that you can earn more per hour by vendoring certain a lot of greens and even some blues.

I'm going to leave it as an exercise to the reader to find sites that offer those details because I think it's a bad idea in a world when we have "Salvage All." The amount of micromanagement required is immense. Even though it takes little time, it requires your attention and will ultimately suck most of the fun out of the game for 99% of everyone. (Remember: you have to pick through gear to vendor, save it, and visit vendors often enough that your inventory doesn't clog up all the time.)

tl;dr salvage all green and below — it's the most coin for the least effort (even if it isn't always the most coin possible)

Caveat: if the markets heat up due to some of the changes ANet has mentioned, then we might see times it's worth using the TP even for masterwork. (Not very likely; just don't assume that the status quo is permanent.)

I salvage it as well but I use black lion salvage tools that yield a better percentage of bonus mats. What I'm after is the Dark Matter globs. It's the only way I know how to get them, and I consider it good to get about one per item on average. The rest just goes in the bank.

Oh one other thing - IF the exotic is selling for more than a gold on the TP I sell it. IMO a glob of dark matter isn't worth both the salvage tool and a gold.

usualy its worth that becouse the sigil is worth so much check what the sigil is worth and salvage with a black lion kit instead mate.

I do use a black lion kit. Generally if the exotic has a sigil that's worth much the exotic itself is higher priced. Obviously, if you expect to get more out of the salvage than the sale, you salvage, regardless of the reason.

I always salvage green and below, with one exception. If I'm in the Silverwastes with my magic find boosted to open all my HoT bags and ID my PoF unid'd gear, and I accidentally jam up my inventory to where I can't salvage, I vendor whatever has rolled up as light green-or-lower armor, since it's what's mostly likely to return a lower value in materials. (I don't have a L53 bag opening character, so it's all L80 gear, and I've got silk and gossamer coming out my ears. If I ever do, I'll switch to vendoring just enough heavy armor to make room, rather than all of the light.) Otherwise, I don't feel like the difference is enough to make up for the time to stand there and sort through it all.

@Linken.6345 said:I thought you always opened the unid gear on lvl 80, do you still get the named weapons as a 47-53?

  • its much harder to do events and get vinewrath kill for the mf boost as a lowbie =)

I was thinking more about the bags than the unid'd gear with the L53 bag opener character part of my comment--as far as I know, unid'd gear doesn't scale with the opener, so you'd still have a chance at the named weapons.

Edit to add that it occurs to me that I don't think the HoT caches affected by MF scale with the opener character level, either, so that part would only apply if you were also opening the other champ bags at the same time.
