I've made it to 80, I am naturally in the market for a mount. What's the procedure, buying straight out of the market, or from a stable dealer. If dealer where are they? Also, what is better, a ground type ie. "dinosaur", or a fly type ie. "griffin?

Nope, once you done the PoF story you have to do some quests in the desert maps to unlock these mounts: raptor/springer/skimmer/jackal , gryphon for a long quest cost 250 gold. same for roller beetle, a collection in the map "domain of kourna" (3rd episode of living season 4.

Here are the places:Raptor = finishing PoF story step "sparking the flame"Springer = Highjump Ranch, desert highlands heart quest (cost 50 contracts + 1 gold coin)Skimmer = Skimmer Ranch, elon riverlands heart quest (cost 50 contracts + 4 gold coins)Jackal = Sand Jackal Run, the desolation, heart quest (cost 200 contracts + 20 gold coins)Gryphon = Sunspear sanctuary, collections that require buying items, total of 250 gold coins.Roller Beetle = After finishing collection in domain of kourna (almost free)

Different animals are the skins for these 6 mounts, purchasable on the trading post for 400 gems, warning: random skin

You only buy skins for the mounts on the Gemstore, not the mount itself.You earn the Raptor by doing the First Story to Path of Fire.The Springer, Skimmer and Jackal are bought from Heart Vendors in Desert Highlands, Elon Riverlands and The Desolation, respectively.The Griffon requires finishing the Path of Fire Story line, completing some collections, and having 250g to do so.

The griffon is the only one that's really difficult to. The raptor is given to you for completing one short story instance and the rest just require you to reach and complete a heart and then buy it. You also don't need to get all of them right away. The raptor and springer are probably the most useful, the rest are pretty much optional, even when playing in HoT maps.

Easy as heck to earn all your mounts, and if you follow dulfys guide ( http://dulfy.net/2017/09/24/gw2-griffon-mount-collections-guide/ )to getting the griffon you will be done in no time. NOT DIFFICULT AT ALL!!!!!!
