Im not sure if i should go for masteries hero point completions or finish my PoF and HoT story line. And if masteries and hero point what the best way of going about that is

The glider upgrades involve improving the speed, control and durability of the glider. On its own is fine if you want a way to glide from one point to another or just a way to avoid fall damage (some jumping puzzles don't allow the glider and/or mounts to be used). When it comes to the mounts masteries, I'd say that they are more impactful due to them changing multiple mounts instead of only the glider. If you want your raptor to jump a lot further than the non upgraded version, then that's the first thing you need to focus on, as it leads towards accessing other mounts. In the PoF zones, some mastery points can be only accessed by using different mounts.

In the vanilla game, you can gather just enough hero points to unlock every core specializations and one of the elite specializations to near completion. Just keep clicking on the button to learn that utility skill/trait, you don't have to worry about leaving out something that you might need later on. Masteries can be found in both the vanilla game and HoT/PoF. In the achievement tab, you can find those masteries telling you on which map that specific mastery is located.

If you finish the PoF and/or HoT story lines, you'll have to work on some mastery lines anyway. Updraft Gliding and bounce mushrooms as a minimum in HoT, with Poison cloud Itzel mastery, Nuhoch Wallows and the Exalted stuff close behind; and Raptor 3 (long-jump) to get Springer. Boosting Springer or Skimmer to 3 will enable you to unlock Jackal. I'd also advise cranking the Pact Commander line in the Central Tyria masteries, so that you can unlock autoloot (the last tier of Pact Commander).

Hero point completions are relevant only if you want to use a HoT or PoF elite specialisation, but are essential if you do want that.

For HP completions: the best thing is to look out for HP trains (find them in the LFG tool). Same for mastery points, although for those you'll need to be in the right region as there are three pools of points.

As others have already explained, you will need a bare minimum amount of Mastery Points and Masterys to complete the HoT story line. Those are usually listed to you as you progress.

Hero Points are used to upgrade your classes and specializations trait lines. That said:

  • Grinding to lvl 80 or boosting already grant you the exact amount of points you need to get your "Core" class traits and utility lines.
  • Any point you get on map completion is "extra". You use those to open your specializations lines.
  • Points on "core maps" grant you 1 hero point per completion, meanwhile points on Expansion maps grant you 10. You need around 250 for each specialization.
  • You don't need to complete Hero Points on HoT to use on HoT specialization, as HP are universal. But in a general way each specialization has more than enough HP on maps to max your specialization and still have extra points.

HoT HPs are somewhat harder to complete since the maps are in a general way, harder. PoF HPs are easier.Commonly, people make "Hero Point Trains" to gather players to complete HPs, you may want to join those in your current map for some advantage.

Keep in mind that, with the exception of specific mastery upgrades, you don't need to max every masteris nor unlock your specialization to beat story content.
