On the wise use of Gems

Hey everyone! New player here. I have a question and need some advice from experienced players. I bought both the HoT and the PoF expansions and will be receiving 4,000 Gems as a part of the package...my question is simple: if you were a brand new player how would you spend those Gems (knowing what you know now)? I will be doing alot of crafting...but I won't be buying any fashion stuff 'til way later in the game.

I definitely will be buying those episodes, someday...but that content is only for lvl 80 characters, which, for me, is many months away. Besides, each episode only costs 200 Gems x 4 = 800 Gems - leaving you with 3,200 Gems to spend.

priority order of gemstore purchases in general most to least, imo:-All living season episodes (ls2, ls3, ls4...no idea on the overall cost so, somewhere around 2000 gems i think. alternatively if you don't like story that much then cut ls2, but ls3 and ls4 are mandatory imo)-Copper fed salvage o matic (800g)-Lounge pass (permanent, not limited use. any lounge of your choice, but preferably mistlock sanctuary) (800g)-Shared inventory slot x3 + full set of unbreakable gathering tools (1890g on bulk buy discount for the slots, 2400g minimum for the unbreakable tools)-Shared inventory slot x2 (ls3 and ls4 portal tomes) (1890g on bulk buy with a spare, or 1400g)

So...with 4000g, i'd buy the first half of that list i think.

Actually - you will reach lvl 80 sooner than you expect. And those episodes - at least some of them -are A MUST. I just reached that conclusion and want to buy all just to be on the safe side (unfortunatelly due to a bug I'm unable to buy gems atm - but that offtop). Also LW3 will cost ya 960gems and LW2 are for 1600 (those are on sale now 20% off - that is why I want to buy NOW not when they full price again).

You can get lvl 80 in less than a week. And with each next character it will take less. But that is a plus since this game really begins at lvl 80 :)

For remaining gems I suggest to buy character slot or bank space.

I don't think there's anything you need to buy right away, but if I was starting a new account now here's the things I'd definitely want to buy sooner or later:

  • Living Story seasons (complete packs work out cheaper than buying episodes individually)
  • Bank tabs
  • Shared inventory slots
  • Infinite gathering tools (only 1 set - use shared slots to share them)
  • Character slots
  • Assorted cosmetics - I like having costumes which don't look like armour to switch into in town, and gliders and mount skins to match characters)

Apart from living story seasons all of that goes on sale sooner or later, so it might be better to wait until it's discounted (I never buy shared inventory slots at full price - too expensive IMO). Also if you're not an altaholic like me you might not want more character slots or even shared inventory slots, but I like having both.

I always thing it's a good idea to go for both useful and fun stuff.

Useful: 2500 gems

  • Copper-fed @800 (or better this week: Salvager's Supplies, 1100 for copper-fed + silver-fed, plus extras)
  • Shared inventory @700 (for the copper-fed; silver-fed can remain in the bank)
  • Mistlock Sanctuary Pass @1000 (a convenient 'hub' with a "return to sender" feature, that puts you pack where you were earlier)

Fun:

  • One glider skin (400-700 gems), to fly in style.
  • One outfit (~700 gems)

And save the rest for later. There's always something that people want... and they are annoyed they don't have the gems. You can also convert to gold, if there's something in the trading post that catches your fancy.

(I don't disagree with anyone else's suggestions; this is just an alternative view.)

By 'storage expander' do you mean Bank Tab...or is that a separate thing for crafting mats?

There's a separate thing called "Storage Expander" that adds 250 to the capacity of every stack in Material Storage. You can buy it repeatedly, to a max of 2k. I find having one (so a max of 500) a very big convenience, but see limited reason for more - it's in my view more valuable to sell materials when you've filled 500 unless you're specifically working to a certain thing.

You will find many of these suggestions in the Upgrades tab in the Black Lion Trading Company. Over time I've increased my Storage to 1250 and only bought it on sale. This has been extremely useful as materials for legendary items are required in abundance. Sometimes you need to save up more materials than others before you're able to craft. Having extra storage saves you from having to use bank tab slots.

Google abit and you will a lot of posts on what you must spend on... that includes LWS and bank slots and shares slots and etc... always buy on discounts and be patient ! ask if you are not sure if something has ever been discounted

@Misquesh.9504 said:Level 80 content is months away? I leveled up my first char to the max while being f2p in a week or so.

It depends on how you play, and how much time you have.

It took me almost 7 months to get my first character to level 80, but by then I also had another 4 characters between level 20 and 50 and I'd made and deleted numerous others. I'd also spent a lot of time exploring the map, not necessarily doing things which gave XP, like trying to climb the scenery in places that aren't even jumping puzzles (or at least I didn't know they were puzzles when I started) and talking to any named NPC. And on top of that I was doing this about 2 hours a day at most, some days not at all because I wasn't home or I was doing other things.

It's definitely possible to level very quickly in this game. But not everyone will want to do that and when you're considering what you'll need to buy and when it makes more sense to go by your own expected timeline than the average or what other people are capable of achieving because your experience may be totally different.

Don't buy stuff at full price... usually it comes around.

I'd suggest prioritizing the copper fed salvage kit, and a bank tab or two.

Unlimited gathering tools, and maybe buy 3 more shared inventory slots to place them (as a pack, not separately) when you can. Getting PoF and HoT already gives you 2 and you'll want to put the copper fed in one.

Remaining gems can unlock living story-- in particular I'd unlock LS3-- parts 1 and 3 as they are very useful in getting ascended jewelery.

@GW Noob.6038 said:Well, it seems pretty clear now: buy the Living Story seasons, infinite gathering tools, a Bank Tab, and a copper-fed Salvage-O-Matic. Thanks a bunch, guys! I appreciate all your help!

This is exactly what I'd get. The only thing I'd add is that if you plan to have multiple toons, shared storage space is also very important - and keep your infinite tools and salvage-o-matic in those slots so all your toons can access them without swapping every time you log.

S-Tier upgrades:

  • Copper-Fed-Salvage-O-Matic (no reason to buy a shared inventory slot, you'll get 2 once you use a level 80 boost from either expansion)

A-Tier upgrades (in no particular order):

  • Living World Episodes (ideally all for the story, but season 3 takes priority)
  • material storage expander (holding 500 of each material allows to store more than 1 stack, very useful in trading materials to bank characters or vault slots)
  • infinite gathering tools (main downside is they can only be on 1 character at a time unless you invest in more shared inventory slots to hold them)
  • character slots up to 9 minimum (for each class 1)
  • more shared inventory slots

B-Tier upgrades:

  • Bank tab expansions
  • character bag expansions
  • Silver-Fed-Salvage-O-Matic
  • one of the permanent hub access passes

@Cyninja.2954 Heya! On the permanent hub access passes: I received one - The Lily of Elon - when I bought the Ultimate Edition package. The problem is is that I won't have access to it til I've completed episode 1 of the PoF expansion at lvl 80. I had planned on buying the 'Mistlock Sanctuary" passkey but wanted to find out if it would be accessible at my current lvl (22) first.

The Mistlock Sanctuary is quite amazing, nicely made with access to services and even fractals, and I don't like it (very personal taste). Just don't like the extra loading screen but I know a lot of people love the pass. Me personally, I enjoy the Royal Terrace Pass and am using that one (I do own the Lily of Elon pass too).

I would hold off on getting another permanent pass in your case. First due to the 1,000 gem cost and second since a permanent pass needs to be placed into a shared inventory slot for maximum use, which would force you to use both level 80 boosts (one for the salvage-o-matic, one for the pass).

There is another reason why you might consider doing the first PoF story mission (requires a level 80 character though so either get to 80 or boost, I'd recommend playing naturally on you first character). The first PoF mission unlocks the first mount which becomes available to all characters on the account. The major downside is the mix-up on story and coherence.
