GW Noob.6038
During my equipment upgrade today I noticed that some trinkets are vastly more expensive than others with the same stats...the only detectable difference is that one is collectable and while the other is not. What's the deal with that?

What's the deal with that?"Collectable" simply means it's part of an achievement, namely a collection. Aside from those with useful stats for players pre level 80, most of their value comes from:https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Treasure_Hunter
GW Noob.6038
@rng.1024 Thanks! Guess I'll stick with the cheaper non-collectable versions.
Danikat.8537
GW2 is a bit odd in this respect - items with good stats are widely available and a lot of people are willing to spend a lot of time and gold (or even real money) on items for their looks, for achievements and other things which offer no direct benefit. Which means if you're only interested in the stats it's always good to check which options are available as there is almost always a cheap alternative. One popular option for trinkets is to buy them from the laurel vendor. You can get most of the core stat combinations that way and since laurels have relatively few uses (compared to gold) and you get them just for logging in it's often the easiest method to get ascended trinkets. Illconceived Was Na.9781
Even before there were official 'collections,' some people just liked having items with special icons or names. For example, Sam has identical stats to the Opal Orichalcum Earring. In April 2014, Sam traded at 10-15 gold while the Opal Orichalcum Earring was trading at 2-4g during the same period. At that point, there was absolutely no in-game reason to use one over the other. The only reason one traded at a higher value was that some people thought the name was fun and the icon was cute:

Those are the two items that prompted me to make this post! This 'Sam' earring is now over 200 gold, whilst the Opal one is only 3-4 gold.
Danikat.8537
There's even been requests to be able to transmute trinkets, even though they don't show on your character - just so people can have their favourite name/icon instead of the one for whatever item has the stats they need. These days the difference is more extreme because Sam is one of the required unlocks for Treasure Hunter (and the only event which dropped it suffered from intermittent bugs for a long time, reducing the available supply when that collection first launched). You can see a list of other prized-for-their-unlock value here:https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Treasure_Hunter#World_boss_chests
