Try this trick:

Stealth -> Shortbow 1 -> swap weapon to dagger/pistol while the arrow is in mid air -> backstab to steal

You can also shoot Shadowshot and keep yourself stealthed. To do this, simply shoot Shadowshot while on stealth, then quickly stow your weapon when the bullet connects, this is a powerful tool in your kit if you want to stick to your target while under the effects of stealth.

Always attempt to land Steal, and combine weapon skills with Steal (Shortbow 2, dagger 2, sword/dagger 3, sword 2 + steal always add value instead of steal alone).

If you're running DD d/p, one of the most useful in your kit is pistol 4.

Also, decap and map control is mostly your job. Lol

When it comes to PvP, the thief is a very mobile glass cannon. Thief is a very squishy profession with low health and survivability, but the evasion/stealth and high mobility more than compensates for that. It is true that thieves in PvP should be focusing mostly on neutralizing enemy capture points and +1 or outnumbering fights for example, your teammate is in a 1v1 against another profession on a capture point like close or far, you join them and you +1 or outnumber the fight. If you find yourself in a team fight like 2v2 or 3v3, try to either kill an enemy player or leave to neutralize a capture point so that you force the enemy players to capture the point once again.

Core s/d and d/p daredevil are both great builds for thief in PvP. Core thief has more evasion while daredevil has more stealth. Core thief is more of a +1 profession in longer fights while daredevil focuses more on bursting enemies from stealth. If you practice it well enough, you can backstab low health professions like elementalist, guardian and thief which allows you and especially your team to finish them off and you've created a 5v4 situation.

One more advice I can give you is to learn teleport spots. This is crucial for thief as it can help you kite certain professions that don't have teleports like warrior or can help you reach places faster. And finally, about face is a great keybind to use when using skills that have backward leaps or dodges like withdraw or roll for initiative. What you do is hold LMB, about face, withdraw and hold RMB to continue moving forward instead of turning the opposite direction.
