What is wrong with advising to look at what profession could benefit?Once they know builds, know the class and what it is capable of no one will say anything if they go ahead and make own build.For better , for convince, for lulz.But atm it's a new player with very little information, why not advise, what is wrong with it?

I have no problem with you recommending a build to a player, you BELIEVE to suit perfectly. My problem is, that the likes of you act like you are serving us the undeniable truth. The meta is an opinion of a minority of players, those who actually run the benchmarks and calculations, who believe that a class has to be played in a certain way to meet certain parameters. You call it efficiency.

The problem is, we cannot look into the heads and minds and thoughts of other people - yet. So what works best in theory, might turn out horrible for the person behind the keyboard. Just because it meets the computer-calculated requirements, does not mean it is the best or the only possible way to do it. It only means that according to the parameters the person who ran the benchmark set up, this build works with a very high efficiency factor.

So if someone has a good feeling about creating a boon duration build with his character, why don't you let him proceed? If he runs into errors, he can still ask for advice. Your opinion of saving us time, by giving us the ultimate answer is not very smart. It is about as funny as telling me the answers of an IQ test, right when I am about to fill it in. Yes, I know the correct answers now. But I never know how good I would have performed.

Please do check timetable, I mention it, for any game mode, meta has builds even for open world. And it's not builds on papers it is builds tested and used by many players or it won't be there.

You can't pass IQ test if you don't know basic alphabet, can you?

BTW they don't have a good feeling all they saw is how scourge F2 skill can convert condition into boon. Given that F2 is spamable on low cd, boon duration brings absolute nothing.

As someone who prefers to play an elementalist/weaver despite her being listed dead last in practically every power ranking, I say build what you like, experiment. That said, there's nothing wrong with knowing what the community thinks of your build and which builds are optimal. After all, we do have several character slots.

@Tamur.6503 said:Hi all,

To make this as short as possible, here's a totally hypothetical situation, and a question at the end:Question: how did you amazing forum people who can spout this stuff ever learn it? Trial and error seems like it'd take an awfully long time and more gold & time than I'll ever have.

For me to answer was, learn together. Created a guild that didn't care about people's player experience, that welcome people to ask questions, we learn together and grow together. If someone didn't know the answer, I would wiki or google it. If that didn't help, I would use Youtube and Dulfy. If that still didn't help, I'll get out there and experiment with the game and learn things myself. There is also reddit, but a lot of my knowledge came from guildies, in-game guides like the Personal Story, and wiki. Also, the forums is a good place too for asking questions :D

I learned a lot of stuff by just doing it and then more stuff by playing with others in WvW who were a bit savvier than I at the time about certain things (builds, tactics, etc). After that watching some videos of people playing on certain builds (and slowing down the vids to see the combos in action), then lastly by practicing in game. Find the right people in game to pick their brain and most anything will be learned quickly enough in this game.

I have always being the annoying guy asking question on Map chat ever since i started the game.

Rude people are around, yes, but a lot of mentors as well. Do not be afraid to ask simple questions.

For research:

  • The official wiki is frankly speaking perfect.
  • Than we have the Dulfy website we a ton of guides for what you can't find in the wiki.
