Halp me please. Returning player wondering about professions.

Recommended Posts

Hey, I am returning to GW2 again and am thinking of perhaps picking up Path of Fire too!The problem that I have is that I haven't played in a loooong time and a lot has changed, I really barely played at all in Heart of Thorns tbh so I am sorta out of the loop there too.I have a couple of professions at 80, ele, necro, thief, guardian, revenant and then I also have a mesmer at 45 ( got loads of exp boosts so could take it to 80 in a day probably ).And I am sorta trying to pick between these and pick one that I can play, probably between my ele, necro or mesmer.

I really like necro but I've sorta been looking around on forums and on different websites like snowcrows and they sorta seem to not be all that great in PvE at least :/, and I am not really all that fond of the idea of just being met with '' lol necro '' when I am trying to do content or to underperform because of it.Are necros way behind other professions?I like ele too, honestly it's probably quite even between them I'd say but mesmer just seems to always be wanted and seem to be REALLY good ( as far as I remember they pretty much always have ).Too bad that I am not a big fan of their sword skills tho >.<...

Anyways, what would you guys recommend? Is your profession a big problem in end game content, are people pretty chill about it or does the usual '' MMO douchebaggery '' kick in and people just shut you out because of it?The numbers that I've seen have been quite unbalanced, necros seem to be quite behind and not offer much :/.And with mesmer it basically seems to be '' go sword or else ''...

I'd take other suggestions and thoughts too.I have loads of exp boosts and such so even just leveling something new wouldn't be a problem.I am just trying to pick something that I can play and enjoy without too many headaches.Thoughts and opinions in regards to PvP are welcome too, but I think that I get my fill of that in fighting games lol. For the most part I am looking to mainly play PvE.Thanks!

Ask yourself: where are you headed and what is your goal? (for this game)

If you are under no time constraints, why not make a new character and start from scratch (ideally keeping the old characters for play in the future)?

As far as necromancer, the class is fine. Unless you plan on raiding within 1 week without any knowledge, gear or understanding, it makes no difference which class you pick for getting back into the game. Necromancer have no issues in fractals as damage dealers and even in raids a necromancer performance is far above what success would require.

If you do want to skip the 1-80 progress, might I recommend that you at least play the story first to refresh your memory. That includes HoT and PoF after the vanilla campaign.

Final note on "endgame" challenging content, which refers to mostly fractals and raids here. Certain classes fill certain roles, with the vast majority going towards damage dealers, and as such many people expect certain builds on those classes. Mesmer, or rather chronomancer, for example, use main hand sword because it provides the possibility for differing offhand weapons while the only other main hand weapon for chronomancer (scepter) is lacking.

Thanks for your comment Cyninja, I wouldn't say that time is necessarily an issue I am just a bit impatient when it comes to leveling haha. Now that you mention it I always skipped the story in GW2, I usually do in MMO's which I've sorta regretted a lot especially in FFXIV.I paid more attention to it in Blade and Soul back when I still played it and greatly enjoyed it and it made me regret having skipped it so much in past MMO's >.<.

I've been thinking about perhaps deleting my Mesmer and going through the story from scratch to have a fresh experience with a Warrior, especially since I am not feeling the sword with Mesmer at all tbh. It's very boring and clunky imo.

I think that what worries and bothers me is that I have a very annoying tendency to like classes and characters that are low tier/ the worst in games that I play <.<.So I start enjoying something and go '' oh god, what's wrong with it? '' and then I check the meta on websites and things don't look good and I go '' of fecking course... ''.

Btw, how far into Path of Fire do you get your mount?Would you say that it's worth getting Path of Fire early on or should I wait until I am finished through the vanilla game and Heart of Thorns?

Well you can always give it a shot, if you don't get invested in it, just stop.

Short note on deleting characters:

  • birthdays and birthday gifts in this game are tied to characters, not account. Remaking (deleting and creating a new character) resets this day for that character. The main benefits/downsides for getting an additional character slot:

Benefits:

  • there is daily content which benefits having multiple characters mostly related to acquiring certain resources
  • multiple birthday gifts, especially beneficial on older characters
  • some people use same class characters for different builds or game modes saving the hassle of changing gear
  • using extra characters as storage is a lot cheaper than extra bag slot or bank slots

Downsides:

  • higher cost, for buying an additional character slot
  • name might require being flexible or using name change contracts
  • having a huge amount of characters can become confusing

Not a huge issue in GW2 since in general endgame content difficulty stems more from organization. Any class can succeed, just not fill every role. All classes work fine as damage dealers since the required benchmarks are not that high.

@Kolsyrad.2807 said:Btw, how far into Path of Fire do you get your mount?

The initial first PoF story mission unlocks the raptor. Further mounts are unlocked while continuing the story and maps. Some people play the first PoF mission just to get the mount for movement. Mounts are account wide unlocks, similar to gliding from HoT.

Both would work, I do suggest to people to get the mount though since it allows for an easier transition from other MMOs.

Regarding the classes, it really depends on what you want to do.

If you're going to enjoy open world content, it honestly doesn't matter what you pick, infact Necromancers is one of the easiest/Strongest for that.

If you're going to Instanced content (Fractals and Raids) then somewhat, I think everything can work if you find some people to play with, the usual problem is pug groups that assume any non meta-build = idiot player that doesn't know how to play, and thus starts complaining. As long as you read up and know what you're doing, and talk with people it's usually ok, as long as they're willing to listen, if not leave :p

So as someone said above, it's really about what goals you set for yourself, and how you want to reach them. For example yes Mesmer is very much wanted in raids etc, but you are locked into 1 playing style, which you might not enjoy at all, or people again going to get salty etc.

I wouldn't delete a character , as someone mentioned, birthday gifts are great.

I think that what worries and bothers me is that I have a very annoying tendency to like classes and characters that are low tier/ the worst in games that I play <.<.

I know the feeling but I"m also would not jump ship just because certain classes are better than others. Just play what you enjoy. You will need to invest some time into them and perhaps you may find you like them later. I used to always say to myself, why do I pick the worse classes, but in gw2, it's alt friendly. For instance, I could not stand Longbow ranger when HOT came out. I used her as a mule until recently, when I put my engi's ascended viper gear onto her and I definitely enjoy condi soulbeast with shortbow, dagger/dagger. Is it meta, heck no, but I have other classes for that.

So I start enjoying something and go '' oh god, what's wrong with it? '' and then I check the meta on websites and things don't look good and I go '' of fecking course... ''.

You're not the only one, but you really should just play what you enjoy and build a alt gear/character for meta if really want to be a min/max player.

Having returned not too long ago myself, I don't recommend you start over a character. It took me 2 weeks to get control of my character back somewhat but I'd rather be frustrated then frustrated and bored( leveling again).

Personally I like Spell Breaker for wvw roaming, Firebrand for Fracts( power support hybrid quickbrand) but they are great as support if you're into support. I'm not.I've kinda shelved my weaver(ele) although she was my favorite pre and during HOT. Weaver and Sword is a bit clunky.

Btw I thought I should ask here instead of make a new thread.

Does anyone know why sometimes you get stuck in place and can't move in the middle of your rotation?Am I doing something wrong or what's happening? I've noticed this with thief and ele in particular, like if I am doing cloak and dagger and try and go to the back of my enemy my character will sometimes not move and be stuck in place.Same thing with my ele when I am doing my Tempest rotation and I am trying to move to grab my conjured weapon and I can't because my character just decides that she doesn't want to move for some reason <.<.I have no clue why this is happening, does anyone know what I am talking about and why that happens?

Can't say I've seen anything similar, you're sure you've not been hit by an Immobilize effect (condition) ? or something similar.

Sounds like either you are immobilized or it's lag :).

I'm going to agree with the others, it sounds like an immob, lag, or something else on your system is chewing up resources.

  1. If it's an immobilization, you should see an icon above your utility skills that has a red background and crossed chains.
  2. If it's lag...check to see what your ping is. If there are tons of other players around or you've got tons of flashy effects going off, try turning your video settings down a tad.
  3. If it is system resources, see what else you've got running that you can turn off. Kill steam - it's small, but every little bit helps, close web browsers, maybe temporarily disable your anti-virus (note - TEMPORARILY, as in just long enough to verify it isn't the culprit), etc. Check your installed programs (start->run->appwiz.cpl for windows machines) and make sure you don't have any stinking toolbars installed - they're a great virus vector and the suck resources like mad, you wouldn't believe the number of times I've uninstalled stupid toolbars and had people tell me their machine is running like it was brand new.
