ToS rules extended to other languages or not?

Recommended Posts

There's a rule in the ToS to not insult or offend people etc. Is it only for english, or is it only for the main languages of NA and EU (english, german, french)?Or does it also extend to languages like russian or hebrew? and what about if it's written in latin letters instead their real letters?

Why would "be nice to each other" care about what language you're speaking?

But yes, it does include any languages they can police. It's to an often amusing degree to English-speakers who use the filter to find curses and offensive words in other languages.

Surely, "don't be a horrible person" is easy enough to adjust to in any language."You may not select an Account ID, Account Display Name, ArenaNet Message Board ID, Character ID and/or Team designation, or provide any communication or information on any Message Board, that ArenaNet, in its reasonable discretion, deems to be vulgar, threatening, racist, sexist or otherwise offensive, including but not limited to references related to any religion or deity;"

Case by case. All reports are viewed by the relevant teams for action. I'm sure they'll Google-fu any neccessary slangs/languages.

If I am remembering correctly over the years I've seen a complaint/s on the forum about being forced to change a character name and it turned out it was in violation of the rules even though it was in a language not officially supported in game. I imagine this would also apply to chat. If reported GMs might have to research if it is in a language none of them speak.

And what if you curse in Klingon? What then?! Will Anet have to learn every language, real and fantasy???

The implications are mind boggling!!!

Or they can just google translate. That works too. It wouldnt surprise me if someone get banned for calling another person a "creaking door" or something.

If you want to report someone for saying something offensive in a language which is not officially supported, and especially if you think it may not be possible to look up the word/s used because they're written in Latin letters then it might be better to submit a ticket rather than just using the in-game report option, so you can explain why it's offensive.

However you report it you should be aware that Anet will not discuss the outcome of a report with anyone except the person reported. So even if you submit a ticket they will not tell you what actions they took as a result.

Exactly what @Danikat.8537 says:If you think it won't be obvious, file a support ticket and be explicit: what was the exact phrase used (when & where & what time). Offer a translation to your best understanding and then point the support team to where they can look it up for themselves.

In short: make it easy for whoever gets your ticket to see what you see.
