Arenanet Market Research

Recommended Posts

I think Arenanet needs to do more market research.

Improve on areas that have kept players in the game, and work on areas where players express a need for improvement. The research could provide Arenanet on the direction they should go as a company to provide a product that fits/grows their audience.

However I haven't seen any kind of polling done from Arenanet so here's an unofficial one.

Anet don't need to send out surveys to find out things like where players spend their time in-game, because they already have that data. Almost everything we do in GW2 is recorded, at least temporarily, and Anet can use that data to build up 'heat maps' showing where players spend the most time, or extract stats like which professions/races/skills are most and least used, which mounts players prefer and all kinds of other things. (One of their infographics even included the most and least deadly enemies - the ones which killed the most players for each time they were defeated and the one which was killed the most times for each player they killed.)

There is of course a danger in trying to draw qualitative conclusions like "What do players enjoy?" from quantitative data like where we spend most of our time, because the things which take the longest may not be the things we most enjoy doing, but that's where things like feedback posted on this forum comes in - for example they got the message pretty quickly that players were not enjoying the time gating on the skyscale collection and changed how it worked to make it less restrictive.

And getting that data from a survey isn't as easy as you'd think either because if you make the questions too vague all the answers will be different and there will be no consistency to draw conclusions from but if they're too specific a lot of people will ignore them or answer ones which are actually irrelevant and then fill any comments fields or free text boxes with what they actually want to tell you. Creating good surveys and analysing the data correctly is a whole specialism in it's own right.

I'm sure Anet would do that if they thought it was necessary. I know they used to send a survey to anyone who hadn't logged in for a while because I got it for my second account after I forgot the password. I'm not sure if they still do that (or if they send out surveys for other groups of players which don't include me) but clearly they are willing to use those tools when they need to. They've also done things like asked WvW guilds to test new WvW maps, or asked raid guilds to test new raids when they think it's relevant.

So basically they already have a huge amount of data on us (this wasn't about GW2 specifically but I once saw it summarised as "MMO developers have the worlds Google and Facebook wish they had") and are willing and able to gather more when they need it, using the method/s they think are most appropriate.

I think your results will be impacted to some degree since you made this a public versus private poll. Just a recommendation in the future.

Well I guess I'll bite my own bait

General:

  • What do you enjoy about this game? The unique blend of dynamic action and rpg elements, the wvw mode.

PVE

  • What do you enjoy about this mode? / Why do you enjoy this mode?I dislike this game mode. maybe less than 5% of time time ingame is spent on PvE
  • What do you dislike about this mode?Poor AI, lack of meaningful multiplayer cooperation in an MMORPG. Exists as a dps-fest.
  • What would you like to see more of in this mode?Enhanced AI or combat mechanics to the same extent seen in WvW/PvP, condition bombs, reflects, stealth, boons, strips, etc. Open world player killing

WvW

  • What do you enjoy about this mode? / Why do you enjoy this mode?Highlights and utilizes the best of GW2's combat mechanics.
  • What do you dislike about this mode?"PPT", "Karma Trains", and "Ninja-ing" objectives without a fight. PvE.
  • What would you like to see more of in this mode?More map variety, more ways to kill enemy players. Rework of the wvw ability system. More emphasis on player vs player than player vs environment.

PVP

  • What do you enjoy about this mode? / Why do you enjoy this mode?Highlights and utilizes best of GW2's combat mechanics.
  • What do you dislike about this mode?Profession balance is more relevant here and game is far from being balanced. Focuses largely on capping points instead of being a deathmatch. Match riggers ruin experience.
  • What would you like to see more of in this mode?20 v 20 or 30 v 30 death match / an actual guild wars mode. Heavier penalties for afkers and riggers. More focus on game balance, higher frequency and quality of balance patches.

I like the visible (to us) data this poll provides.

I, like many others in wvw, have lost interest.

What I enjoy about the mode?Massive pvp environment...2 or 3 big grps coming together and fighting til the last man

What I dislike?lack of attention, lack of updates, rarely shaken-up

What would I like to see more?more weekly events, more conversations with the devs

True, it seems a bit naive to think that a forum poll like this would bring any meaningful/reliable results.

Another GW2 is dying thread (but in poll form!) since it already assumes Anet doesn't do their own market research/maintain statistics to begin with.

This poll is going to be biased and unreliable due to having too small a sample, since it doesn't include a lot of players who don't regularly visit the forums and ftp players (many of whom would likely vote for the first two options). More veteran players, including myself, are probably going to pick the 3rd choice since they are more likely to have finished most of the non-grinding content, but also most likely comprise more of the active forum population. Thus, you have a poll that is more biased towards the third (GW2 is dying) choice.

Let Anet do their own, more objective, market research as they have been doing.
