That's your opinion and certainly not everyone's including mine. Even if I were to agree that the "quality" of the work is expansion like I cannot even consider agreeing that the "quantity" delivered through the updates remotely touches the overall volume one typically gets in an expansion, even GW2's expansions. As for what they say they would deliver through this newest "Saga" format, all of it is still unknown and unrealized because we haven't seen any of it yet and have no idea if they will be able to meet their current predicted additions. Heck even Mike clearly stated that they are not even talking bout things like elite specs or mounts which are items many have tied to expansions. Also, their latest article they have clearly stated in multiple paragraphs that their goal is to listen to what the players want, even to the point they outright quoted; "Justin Fassino, PR manager: I think the important thing here, obviously, is that everyone at the studio knows that there’s a demand for an expansion. So it’s not like we’re ruling it out."

Well, it's not an opinion ... we are seeing the same elements being released in many recent LS as we were seeing being released in expansions, with the exception of elite specs for obvious reasons. I'm not rubbibng my crystal ball and saying there won't be expansions. I'm saying expansions don't make sense ... even to player who so desperately think they are still necessary. The decision to deliver content in expansions isn't about whether it's THE way to do it or not. It's about how it fits with their business model. Put it this way ... Anet has released WAY more content in LS than they have in expansions ... and you're going to sit there and predict that if we don't get expansions, some terrible things is going to happen? You know, fearmongering isn't a compelling reason for anet to do expansions .. you must realize this.

It's almost comical to see people rally around the need for expansions and what other companies do when you look at the fact that Anet NOT doing what other companies do is why this game is successful ... but OK, you stick with that.

What is comical is presenting personal opinions as facts, especially when they are so deliberately contrarian. You say Anet has already been delivering expansion-level content through live updates. Let's see:

  1. Has a LW season brought the same amount of brand new assets (environments, enemies, sounds) as an expansion like HoT or PoF has? And by "brand new", I mean just that. Newly created not reskins and mashups of older.
  2. Has a LW season brought a new game-changing feature the likes of gliders from HoT?
  3. Has a LW season brought a new game-changing feature the likes of mounts from PoF?
  4. Has a LW season introduced a new game-wide progression system like masteries?
  5. Has a LW season introduced an entire new class like Revenant?
  6. Has a LW season introduced a plethora of new class specializations like HoT and PoF did?
  7. Has a LW season introduced a new major game feature like HoT guild halls? Or at least added to it like PoF did?

And those are just a few. Now, if Anet decides to surprise us with new features of similar impact to the game with this saga, I am all for it. Until then, the answer is no, Anet hasn't been delivering expansion-level content with LW.

Oh, and a question : If LW has already been expansion-level, then why did Mike Z feel the need to mention it as a new direction for the studio in those interviews? I mean, if the claim is that from now on, we will be rolling out "more significant content" via LS that we usually save for xpacs, it's safe to assume that wasn't the case before.

None of this makes sense ... It has nothing to do with if they HAVE done it. It's about if they CAN do it

Again, I'm not forming an opinion ... we HAVE seen expansion-quality content released in LS and nothing would stop Anet from doing so in the future either.

... maybe you should trying playing the game to see it before you come here and say otherwise. You don't need an expansion every 2-3 years to get ANY of those things you are talking about so you really don't have a leg to stand on here.

I never said they CAN'T do it. I'm saying that you are wrong in saying they HAVE and that I am not confident they WILL.

By the way, if you truly believe the answer to all these is yes, then maybe you should try playing the game.

You're confidence is irrelevant. If your whole premise to desire expansions is based on your speculation you are going to lose the content that comes with it, you haven't thought this through very well. You're post even eludes to the truth of what I'm saying ... you just care about the content and I'm willing to bet you don't want to wait an 'expansions-worthy' amount of time to get it either. Guess what, no one else does either and Anet knows that.

Not sure why people are so set in these archaic ideas of how an MMO has to work. Expansions are stupid; NO ONE in their right mind wants to wait 2-3 years for new content. If Anet wasn't dolling out LS, you would be BEGGING for the LS-type model. It's the better model for modern PC gaming. There is literally no limitation to what Anet could deliver to us in this model ... but you got baggage from other games and think you will miss out of something if you don't get expansions ... pretty sad.

As for what ArenaNet considers 'expansion-tier' content:

Early messaging around the Icebrood Saga mentioned “expansion-tier features.” What do you see as those features?

MZ: If you look at the history of what we’ve been doing, cooking 500 was another one of these things. Obviously, built-in gear templates are one of those things that we would want to consider in there. We’re taking on bigger projects, to be able to release those when they’re ready, as opposed to holding all back and then doing it as one boxed product. That’s the difference in the methodology.

Things that we wouldn’t rule out – but that we’re not talking about today – would be like another mount, another elite specialisation, those types of things. Those are all things that traditionally have waited until a boxed product is ready.

The irony is that the focus on expansions up until recently is probably the reason we didn't get many of these things. If they DON'T focus on expansions, this stuff is more likely to see the light of day in a timeframe people are more happy with.

I only care about getting the same quality and quantity of content as before (xpacs included). How they choose to deliver it as up to them. If they manage to deliver it through LS, I couldn't give two kittens if they don't make another expansion. I can only speculate as I obviously haven't played this saga yet, but nothing they have said so far indicates that's the case. Comparing instanced bounties and a belated QoL feature to things like mounts, new classes, elite specs is laughable at best.

Mike Z might try to convince me that the HoT t-shirt we got the other day is an expansion-level feature, if it serves their current PR strategy. Thing is, I don't need anyone to tell me what is an expansion-level feature in this game. I have both of Anet's expansions installed and I can see for myself what is expansion-like.

Yet here we are ... some kind of imaginary big barrier that prevents you from believing they would do it, even though they already have. The whole premise for you wanting expansions is because you think you're being lied to ... that doesn't make sense ... Anet is lying to you about content they would release in LS ... but not expansions? You need to go back and rethink what you are saying here.

@Inculpatus cedo.9234 said:Funny, players state that Mounts are 'expansion-quality' content. We received 3 Mounts in Living World.

Yeah apparently there is NO evidence that Anet could ever deliver expansion-quality content outside and expansion ... except for all the examples where they did.

They have not.

@Inculpatus cedo.9234 said:Funny, players state that Mounts are 'expansion-quality' content. We received 3 Mounts in Living World.

I would have thought it obvious but I' ll point it out anyway: There is a pretty big difference between introducing a brand new feature of that scope (main mount bundle, mechanics, framework) and simply adding to what already exists. The work behind these two endeavors is not even comparable. Mounts are a PoF feature. LS4 added to that existing feature (in the most annoying way possible but that's an opinion).

In other words, if this saga introduces a brand new feature of similar impact and scope to mounts, it would be an expansion-level feature. If it simply introduces yet another mount to our collection, it's not.

So let me get this straight ... you are confident that you will get what you expect from an expansion you haven't seen and don't know when it's coming ... but from the same people ... you have no trust whatsoever you will get anything resembling expansion quality content in LS even though we have statements and examples otherwise?

Yeah that makes sense ...

I admit, I didn't realize facts are matter of opinion. One can easily see what expansion-level content is by, you know....playing through an expansion from those same devs.

And the devs are free to make whatever content they like of course. That doesn't mean I have to let hype machines do the thinking for me instead of doing it myself.

The devs seem so out of their element as of lateThey just aren't inspiring any confidence right now imho. They said there would be expansion-worthy content with living story but what they spelled out as expansion worthy was just not what everyone else was expecting.I know Obtena is gonna tell me that new elite specs, mounts, or mechanics are possible with the saga platform but they have literally said they are not even working on any of that right now. Without those things I just don't see people staying interested long and fairly unwilling to wait for the amount of time it would take to add that 'after' the saga or 'late' in the next saga (however they want to word it).Its a weird time in the game..no question about that.

Right ... so if they DO start working on that, when you do you want it? 2-3 years from now in a time crushing expansion? I know you don't. I know NO one does. We want it now. Yet people complain that they don't want it in a LS model and rather have an expansion? Guess what ... people aren't thinking here.

Honestly, I think what we are seeing here is the impact of events that happened at Anet earlier this year. It seemed weird to get 500 cooking, legendary sigils, etc ... just sort of dropped into the game, somewhat uneventfully.

Somehow you think this is our fault? Who decided to ignore GW2 development and pursue new projects which in effect led to the position they are in today? Sure the layoffs worsened that situation but the fact remains they chose to put minimal resources into GW2 after PoF and did not start working on the next expansion (or expansion like content) which has put everyone devs included into this current situation. This is why we won't see any expansion for 2 years if ever and this is why they are desperately trying to force feed this new "saga" format dressed up with the promises of expansion like content coming somewhere in the future. They truly don't have a choice now and this was all as a result of them taking a gamble on these other projects which clearly backfired in a big way.

You can try and rationalize until the cows come home but Anet put the game at risk with their own actions and now they are desperately scrambling to make up ground which is why we won't seeing expansion like content like new classes, races, elite spes, mounts etc anytime soon, it has nothing to do with trying to deliver it in a new format!

Your arguments are always opinion based and I knew you would target that one line and not my argument which is why i left it in there. The fact is everything I said is reality and no amount of trying to shuffle the cards will change it, so stop trying to dress up a defense for not needing an expansion as antiquated methodology in gaming and call a spade a spade. Anet has no other choice but to hope this works at least up until it really is defensible by having it come out in game through this "saga" or until they get it into an expansion.

Haha thanks for the recap. I know a lot of players already 'know' the stuff, but somehow I found it interesting to see what the guy himself had to say during the interview. In a way it can be helpful to actually see what has been said by the devs, without all the additional speculation and reading between the lines.
