But they do make money when people buy gems to exchange for gold. The exchange rate is reactive. A person that does 10x Raids get 200 goldA person that pays will real money will get 250 goldSo if some1 wants some small costs item from the Trading Posts , he better of go farming , because he dont get a trementous amount of boost , with real money .A person that wants a Costumes , wont transform their real cash > gems > gold>gems >buy item , to benefit for the ''boost'' of gold from from other playersAnd even then , the system will takes a 25% cut , going back at 200 goldThat why the company said many times that low costs items > ppl wont buy them with cash .And when they cost 400 gems , but was RNG , ppl whined about predator mechanics .malaka

Different thing is the ingame economy:The gold i got 20 min agao by coverting gold>gems , i ''bought'' them from some1 who spent real money 5 years .We the players use existing money from day 1 launch of GW2 till now that is circulated throught the system)Recycle-Circulation of PAST BITCOIN MONEY is different thing from NEEDING NOW 10/10/2019 REAL MONEY TO KEEP THE SERVERS UPTHE BITCOIN MONEY OF THE PAST have been alreaydy used to create the content like LS2 or Living Story 3 , or pay the 400 workers10/10/2019 NEW REAL MONEY (not gold>gems) is needed to create new content a.k.a LS6 or 3rd expanion or play the 288 workersYou are curently using old money .... used money....already spent....caput money...bitcoins......circulated....bought from some1 4-5 years ago whos doesnt play or breathes...

Different thing ingame economy , effecting players / different thing to keep up the servers

You do know that gems go poof when you spend them in the gemstore right? So people who bought gems to gold and gold to gems 5 years ago most likely already poofed away said gems.Without new people buying gems and adding them to the gem pool we would have alot high gold to gem conversion like for example 1k for 100 gems. And not anyone I know would spend gold to gem for that conversion instead buying gems directly from anet.

So dont worry anet is still getting cash for gems to this day the old gems and cash have been spent years ago aswell.

Without the circulation system , that is based like in real money (your dollar that you spent in the supermarket , in 1-2 year will come back on your hands -they are not printing new dollars every single year for a reason) .

What do you believe ?That a single player that pays 300 dollars per month in the game > getting 24.000 gems , can subtain 50 ''free'' players ?24.000:50 player = each player can only get 480 gems and no more for this month ?And theres a limit like a bunkrupt country , where it forces you to get only 480 for this month ?And w8 till the same player puts another 300 dollars in next month , so you can convert another 480 gems ?

Even theres a aboudance of players that using real money , that each person with 300 dollars can ''carry'' 10 players per month ?so 24.000 gems :10 player = each player can convert 2400 gems per month and a pop up message afterwards slap you with : ''the machines is out of cash , plz try next month''

Simple answer (personal answer C maths:P) : When the game launched the mathematician that did the system insterted some random numbers :The games launced with 1 billion gemsEvery 3 months 15% will be removedIf ppl buy with real cash the ''pricepool'' will be increased by those gemsIf few gems are incerted by bying with real money , then more costly it will become for gold>gemsLow the amount subtracted from 15% > 8% with each year the games get older for ''stability'' , so you wont see 1000 gold = 1 gem scenario

You dont seem to know how it work if I spend 10 dollars and buy gems they are mine it wont go into the gem pool unless I convert said gems to gold by buying gold from the exchange. If I decide to instead spend it in the gemstore my gems goes poof they are used up gone.So there is no circulation you speak of old gems get either held on accounts or vanish if used in the gemstore.Thats not taking into account the % of gems that get deducted as tax when buying gold or the gold that vanishes as tax when buying gems.

About you 300 dollar person yes it works exactly like that but the less gems that are in the pool the more the free players as you call them will have to spend gold to get said 480 gems it wont be equal for all of them.So if lets say 20 of them spend and the gem to gold raises enough for another person to buy 300 gems and convert to gold,Anet have then got 2 persons paying. And thats what it continues to do people spend their ingame time (gold) to entince the people with less ingame time to spend thier hard currency (cash) to get what they want ingame.

Edit 2If exhange worked like you belive then every gold generated in game would end up in the gold pool.Making people spending gems for gold super rich since that pool would be huge.Since you seem to belive every gem bought get automaticly inserted into the gem pool why wouldent every gold made be automaticly inserted into the gold pool?

Edit 3Incase you dont like clicking links.

ProbablyJohnSmith94 points·4 years agoTo be clear. The exchange has a supply of both Gems and Gold. When you trade to the exchange you influence the supply of each. The exchange rate is relative to current supply of each. The price changes geometrically as one pool empties creating a better exchange rate for the low supplied currency. For this reason it's VERY difficult for the exchange to run out of currency.

.......

level 1KahBhumeKhurss - SBI7 points·4 years agoNot sure if you are allowed to answer this, but is the supply of gold specifically what has been exchanged for gems? or does it account for the sum of gold on all players? Thus if theoretically players are farming gold but not transferring nor buying gems, does it affect the price of gems?

level 2ProbablyJohnSmith25 points·4 years agoThe supplies are contained entirely within the exchange. Players farming gold for personal uses would not have an effect until they exchanged that gold for gems.

.....

Brita_The_Purifier17 points·4 years agoWell, shit, thanks for dropping in.

So, there is a pool of both gold and gems that goes into the value of the trades? Are these pools everything available in the game or is it something else entirely?

level 2ProbablyJohnSmith29 points·4 years agosomething else entirely (paste from below): The supplies are contained entirely within the exchange. Players farming gold for personal uses would not have an effect until they exchanged that gold for gems.

.....

Merus3 points·4 years agoThe geometric relationship is new information, thanks John!

What this means: as the pool starts to run out, the exchange rate shoots up much, much quicker than if there were lots of gems in the pool, and how much the exchange rate goes up per 100 gems or so depends on the current exchange rate.

Even if ppl used real money > gems to buy the Lion Boxes that contain items that are sold to the TP , has a money ''loss'' .Theres a player a while ago that used 4.000 gold to Lion Boxes , and he get 800-1000 back while obtaining new skins ?

If the person buying 24.000 gems dident buy gold with it from exchange zero of those gems will be added to the pool.If the pool is empty noone will be able to exchange gold and get gems untill other people fill it up with new gems by trading their gems for the gold in the exchanges gold pool.

If there is zero gems then window in exchange will show you can trade zero gold for zero gems.

Anet wont loan any gems if you want 100 more wait or buy with cash.

How do you know how many people use real money to buy gold or just spend their gems in the gemstore directly?

Yes if they dont put them into the exchange it wont enter those trading pools at all so it will get destroyed by buying things from trading post or just sitting on their account waiting to get spent.

Why the company dont offer gold when buying gems is quite simple inflation, if they created more gold from nothing it would negatively affect the game. The game already create alot of gold by us killing monsters and looting so having the gold to gem/gem to gld and taxing the transactions both ways combat inflation alot.

The gems comes from players buying the gold people have sold for gems in the past with new gems they bought with cash.

EditIf you read the reddit thread the economist that used to work for anet john smith could have told you all this but you refused to read it, I even copy pasted the answers to you.

Simple answer (personal answer C maths:P) : When the game launched the mathematician that did the system insterted some random numbers :The games launced with 1 billion gemsEvery 3 months 15% will be removedIf ppl buy with real cash the ''pricepool'' will be increased by those gemsIf few gems are incerted by bying with real money , then more costly it will become for gold>gemsLow the amount subtracted from 15% > 8% with each year the games get older

No , a person that uses 300 dollars > he will put ingame 24.000 gemsAs you said ...some will be forced to spend more gold >gems , because they prices will spike up .But still if all 20 players get 480 each (regadles of how many Gold they spent) ...then a pop up message will show up and say : ''I AM SORRY THE MACHINE DONT HAVE MORE GEMS, TRY NEXT MONTH'' ?The company will give them a loan of Gems?Where the extra gems (if you want 100 more) will come up ?

Again ppl that are using real money to buy the Costumes or Lion Key Boxxes (?) (not many use money to get gold , you can do 15 days of Fractals) then those Gems as you said , they incerted in the system and after 1 min theyare destroyed by bying the costumes .Why doesnt the company offer some : ''BUY GEMS AND GET 200 EXTRA GOLD , RATHER THAN BUYING OUR COSTUMES .... YOU PREFER GOLD WE SEE IN OUR DATA''Where again the gems for the gold>gem conversion comes?

Yes you am comming to my point of view slowly .When you say ''he gems comes from players buying the gold people have sold for gems in the past with new gems they bought with cash.''what do you mean ?I say those gems are from day 1 LanchWhat about you ? They where 3 months ago ?So 300 dollars x 3 months = 72.000 incerseted gems by a single player :20 player = each person can get 3600 gems every 3 months , till the single guy puts 1000 dollars in the next 3 months ?

The company have data that shows that ppl are buying Costumes and Lion boxes for the rare drops to sell them on the TP .But theres some ppl in the past that have used 4.000ingame farmed gold to buy the boxes , and they get personal skins and items that can be sold from the TP for 1000-1200 gold . Theres a net loss hereEven if some1 used their real money to gem>gold > he would spent 100 dollarrs >20.000 gold and stop .Or even do it 5 times , to buy all the Garden plots + 8 precursor ...leaving the only thing left to buy costumes and mount skinsBut If he uses real money to gems > buy costumes +boxes+mount skins the gems vanishes , like never existed , like you are telling me .

Or they are circulated for future use , like i am saying ?

Again 1 pays > company get the money > gems is manipulated among player and offer company to the one who pays.1 pays ...not 2 or 3

The one that pays get more gem>goldThe 20 have the ability for low cost gold>gemecosystem

Good idea! They should charge for every update too!

lol, i sense your sarcasm. o7No, what I am saying is that the game is BTP..updates are included in that but make a worthwhile expansion and people will happily pay.But if you are just gonna go LWSagas and nickel and dime everything in b/w it is not gonna go over well. You know they could do better...everyone knows they can do better. I am just waiting for them to show it.

And what are your better ways to monetize the game?

Lets start with a more functional spending plan and roadmap for the company and then we can talk about what is or isn't a feasible revenue system

What people are willing to pay depends almost entirely on whether they think it's worth it.

People will spend $30 on mount skins if they think the money is going toward game development and not just more DLC

People will spend $10 on an outfit if the game they are playing that outfit in is engaging and fun

They aren't going to spend that money if all they have to look forward to is never ending overworld zerg gold grind to purchase more content from the gemstore

There's a reason FateGO prints money while other games with the same monetization schemes are virtually unknown outside of AsiaThere's a reason WoW is still going strong while other $15 a month games fell by the wayside

Expansions take time and the game requires content between expansions. This all cost lots of money, along side maintaining the server. All this requires constant money flow to do. This game is B2P. So all that money comes from expansion sales and gem store. This why development takes so long in this game. The developers are so secretive because of this every changing development decisions based on this limitation.

But they do make money when people buy gems to exchange for gold. The exchange rate is reactive.

You are completely correct that if you buy gems for cash then spend them on the gem store they vanish exchange dont change in either direction.

Some gems would have been there form launch yes but you know why?People dont want to pay 10.000 gold for the last gems that are in the pool they rather buy new gems and when gems pool get drained to low other people will see they can get alot more gold for their gems and exchange them for gold untill a equilibrium is reached.

I dont know why you think its only 1 person buying gems can assure you there are alot of people buying gems for hard earned cash. But yes if there is no gems it dont matter if you have 1 million gold you wont be able to get any gems untill someone trade gems for the gold that flow in the exchange gold pool.

a) We are styding the ratio or ppl using real money/farming goldNot all 100% of GW2 players use real money every month . So 1x pays and 20x enjoy the game , its more or less 10% of the ppl paying money .Which is a farly accurate number i think

b) From 10% the company gets money , for past and future projects .The gem incerted into the system is ''manipulated'' by the players , like a free food coupon. The company cannot use the already free ingame food coupon from the 10% player to create more money to pay the bills .

c) Spiking numbers from the gold>gem convertion is not the 90% of the community have the idea that is helping the company to allure more ppl to spent more money.Simple answer is the 90% dont want to use money (like myself) .10% pays , not 20%The rest are having fun

Until ppl understand themself that simply dont want to spent money and try to find excuses , i will bite them in the ass

Theres a net loss hereEven if some1 used their real money to gem>gold > he would spent 100 dollarrs >20.000 gold and stop .Or even ven do it 5 times , to buy all the Garden plots + 8 precursorNot every month x 7 yearsIf he uses real money to gems > buy costumes +boxes the gems vanishes , like never existed

But they do make money when people buy gems to exchange for gold. The exchange rate is reactive. Every time people buy gems with gold, it moves the exchange rate in favor of gems (that is, gems can buy more gold), which makes it cheaper to buy in-game items with fixed gold prices, like icy runestones or the griffon mount. That implicitly raises the value of gems, which entices more people to buy them.

Its the reversePPl that have money , they would keep buying everything from the gemstore (even there wasnt a gold/gem option) and farming ingame to max out their character + buying some gold from goldseller sites. For 90% of the pp, if there wasnt a option like GW1 , they would just skip the gemstore and we would see each mats/items spikking up from 80 silver to 10 gold (like WoW) and they would buy from a goldseller site to buy the 100.000 gold precursor.

90% play whatever content and get rewarded for some amount of gold > so they are freely after some time to enjoy the ''free'' gemstore loot .Its not they play to serve the 10%

The 90% is the one benefiting , like in WoW + Wildstar that can use gold >pay subscritionIts is not for the 10% that have the money

You do not understand business, like at all, nor how generous Anet has been to gw2 players. And you clearly don’t have any better recommendations.

“things got little bit more pushy with the "Macro" transactions”... Game doesn’t run in free pal.

Actually it does exist because of donors and good will.. Do you really think the games costs cover the games upkeep.. No its because of us donating money to get gems through our good will..

No 90% buy gems and convert it to gold.. Earning gold would take you a thousand years to do.. Especially solo.. The games economy is not real its artificially kept up by Anet imo.

@Dante.1508 that is exactly my problem here it feels like little by little that the marketing designer is taking over the game designer place. That is why i mentioned the Khan ur helmet. It feels like i was supposed to be easier to get from the collection, but at one point they changed it to the equivalent of the legendary gold sink but way worse. Like someone that doesn't know how it worked till now and just pushes it to the maximum.Have people noticed also that they started to sell more and more armor skins in the gem shop even though they drew line in the sand and it was outfits for the gem shop armor skins for the game, but they trickle them down slowly there so it is too late when people notice. Another thing most of the outfits and armors in the gem shop and BL chest look way better then their counterpart in the game. I wish they added them at least as DLC requiring gameplay so it doesn't feel so disconnected from the game. The whole thread derailed to how the game makes money , my problem is not that, the problem is that it affects the experience of the game.

There was an initial gems pool that anet seeded at the start of the game, but half a year later they mentioned that this pool was long gone. What is here now is all gems that were exchanged by players for gold

What about you ? They where 3 months ago ?So 300 dollars x 3 months = 72.000 incerseted gems by a single player :20 player = each person can get 3600 gems every 3 months , till the single guy puts 1000 dollars in the next 3 months ?Yes. Notice though, that if gem pool got too small, and people would still want to buy, you would start seeing some ridiculous echange prices (like 1mil gold for 100 gems). So, people would stop buying gems, because those would cost too much. On the other hand people would exchange their gems for gold, because it would be so much worth it. And the system would soon get in balance again.

The error in your thinking is that you assume one of the pools can ever get close to being empty - with the way the system is set up, it would be possible only if the game was truly dying and noone would bother to buy gems for cash anymore.

@Killthehealersffs.8940 said:PPl that have money , they would keep buying everything from the gemstore (even there wasnt a gold/gem option) and farming ingame to max out their character + buying some gold from goldseller sites.

The 90% is the one benefiting , like in WoW + Wildstar that can use gold >pay subscritionIts is not for the 10% that have the moneyYou may want to look up some of the research on that subject. You are completely wrong here - Minnows (the players that don't buy) are absolutely essential in this kind of games, because without Minnows, you won't get any Whales. GW2 gem exchange system only compounds that even more - in order to buy gold for gems, you absolutely require those that will farm this gold and then sell it for gems. If noone was buying gems for gold, all Anet's income from this system would plummet to zero very fast.

From the pure business point of view, Minnows play exactly to "serve" the paying players. They may not realize that themselves, but that is their main function in non-subscription games.

@Swagger.1459 said:Sorry, but Anet makes exactly $0 dollars when someone exchanges gold to gems.

New gems fill the gem pool when players buy gems with cash and then decided to exchange them for gold.

If they dont exchange them for gold no new gems get added and the gold to buy gems raises we dont see the 100 gems for 1 gold anymore that was there at launch do we?

Until ppl understand themself that simply dont want to spent money and try to find excuses , i will bite them in the kitten

You do know that the people in the 90% that use their time in game to earn gold and exchange that gold for gems make it possible for anet to get cash from the 10% right?

If noone spent gold for gems there would be no gold for the gem buyers to get for their cash bought gems.

The company dont care if the 90% know that they help them earn cash they are just happy that they do.

Would you rather the 10% bought gold from bots and anet got nothing?

No 90% buy gems and convert it to gold.. Earning gold would take you a thousand years to do.. Especially solo.. The games economy is not real its artificially kept up by Anet imo.

Please talk abit with Killthehealersffs.8940 s/he seem to think that only very few people buy gems and convert to gold.

@Dante.1508

So you don’t understand that comment. I’ll explain it more for you.

Anet is in the business of online gaming. It’s not a non-profit organization. It took money to create gw2, and takes money to keep this game going.

You are not a goodwill ambassador or donating to the game, you are a consumer. You do not volunteer for Anet to keep the game running, nor do you donate money out of the goodness of your heart. You paid for the game to buy access to playing, and any money you have used on the game was for virtual goods and services for your character(s), not because you’re willingly donating money to Anet for nothing.

This is a business that needs to be profitable in order to stay in business period. That’s how the corporate world works, and it doesn’t run on free.

@Vancho.8750 said:@Dante.1508 that is exactly my problem here it feels like little by little that the marketing designer is taking over the game designer place.

So all you want is free stuff. I have good news for you, you can exchange your gold for gems and get everything for $0 off the gemstore.

Guild wars 2 is hands down one of the best value in terms of content per dollar in the entire entertainment industry.

The amount of fun you can have right now, just buying Path of fire is incredible.

Comparing it to mobile games cash shops is just plain wrong.

Now. The dark side of this value for the money is a more aggressive cash shop than I would like to be. Aggressive in the sense it relies on loot boxes and heavy incentives to buy gems.

It's a 2 edged sword and i'd be curious to see a gaming company find the perfect balance or maybe even completely reinvent the business model.

New gems fill the gem pool when players buy gems with cash and then decided to exchange them for gold.

If they dont exchange them for gold no new gems get added and the gold to buy gems raises we dont see the 100 gems for 1 gold anymore that was there at launch do we?

Until ppl understand themself that simply dont want to spent money and try to find excuses , i will bite them in the kitten

DISCLAIMER: I am not using the terms whales or minnows in a a derogatory fashion only as a descriptive one showing some people have much much more "spending" cash for their leisure activities than some other do to varying degrees.

The thing people need to understand is that cash shops are popular because there lots of "whales" out there that put lots of $$ in it.

People seem to not understand the mechanics of having a closed ecosystem, IE the game world and currencies generated within like gold etc and how it interacts with a cash shop and cash shop currency when that cash shop currency can only be acquired or generated from outside the closed ecosystem.

It quite simple, any gems in the game have one source which is generated from outside the game ecosystem directly by Anet themselves via $$$ to gem purchases. Therefore any time someone acquires gems, be it from the exchange as a gold to gem or directly from Anet a profit is still made.

When you use real money to buy gems the profit for Anet is directly generated in a two person transaction If you use gold to buy gems from the exchange a profit is still made but it's indirect and is a 3 person exchange as the gems you bought had to be bought first from anet.

As far as I am aware Anet does not put gems themselves into the the exchange so people can use gold to buy gems, that would be kind of stupid and cutting their own profits. If that's not the case I would like to see some proof of this.

As far as I am aware all gems in game are generated from outside the ecosystem when someone buy them. Now those gems leave the ecosystem when:

A. someone used the gems to buy stuff in the cash shop, you get the items and poof the gems are deducted from the game world.B. using the exchange via the 15% fee or cut Anet takes backc. when someone hoards gems and quits the game or is perma banned etc

It's a symbiotic relationship, if the people using gold to buy the gems didn't then the whales would have no reason to buy gems to exchange for gold. Remove either one and Anet loses lots of profits.

This isn't speculation it's a fact which is why we have seen the decline or downfall of many p2p game in favor of f2p game with a cash shop. B2p game now have gotten into the action for the simple reason that it brings in lots of revenue.

Over time companies have realized that having only minnows means not enough profit but having only whales means a game that will eventually flop due to a low population.Whales will spend more in a game world that is healthy and for the game to be healthy it requires far more minnows than whales which then allows and entices the whales to spend more $$$.

The bottom line is that every time spend lots of time to farm gold to then buy gems from the exchange you ARE helping Anet sell gems. You do so by allowing whales to then skip the boring in game gold farm to simply buy the gold they want to so they can then just right away do what they wish to in game.

Essentially everyone that "grinds" gold in game to use on the exchange is a gold farmer for Anet which allows Anet to indirectly sell gold to whales and that makes them lots of $$$ and they don't even have to pay their gold farmers

...snip...

I am asking youWhy do you think , that because you can manipulated the gems that is inserted into the game (from 1 x player that already payed them) , what makes you a player that offer any finance support to the game ?You manipulate the gems , you have read some ''studies''that you dont understand , and you dont know how to answer based on they studies you already did

This argument here is a strawman fallacy.

People using this fallacy are trying to narrow down the context of what is being said, to narrow it down to one to one simple transaction in which technically you can say Anet made no money. Technically this is correct as indeed the person buying the gems to sell on the exchange already made Anet their money.

HOWEVER

It's also incorrect as it's a strawman fallacy because the person buying gems for gold in the exchange is helping Anet earn a profit by allowing the person selling the gems on the exchange to actually buy gold and skip the gold grind part of the game. This causes the whale to buy the gems in the first place. Without this incentive provided by the gold seller Anet would not have made that sale.

This argument is a simple troll using a fallacy to try prove or peddle a point that is clearly false and to cheaply con people into thinking that they defeated an argument that was never made in the first place.

No this is wrongYou are not grinding gold , to help the ppl that are using real money .You are grinding gold to get an item , even if that from a NPC , trading with other players, or trading Posts or the Gemstore .The person that is using the cash is rewarded for some extra goldAnd you benefit from the Gemstore as a goldsink+the ability to get itesms without paying moneyThats an ecosystemYou will never know the person whos is paying , not he will

In the end the only money that are going for content+expanion are the REAL CASH , not then endless gem transaction between players

What next ?PPl that not bothering with with farming gold and simply login to play the game , they are Oathbreakers ?Thats the results of the ''studdy'' from the piece of paper sais ?

Again another fallacious argument.

The intent of the people using the exchange is irrelevant whether the incentive is to buy something for gems in the cash shop or buy something in game with gold. This is another prime example of a strawman to peddle a point that is false. It also doesn't matter if the transactions are anonymous.

All you said here is irrelevant to the argument.

The net effect of people using the exchange means Anet makes more $$$ they otherwise wouldn't have. It simple business after all.

You are doing the circular falacy here. You are telling that players grind gold to simply waste it on the Gemstore ?Why not bothering to keep it to their self to gain more wealth , if not to get something ?Are Humonoid that stupid ?

They farm something to get somethingAnd from that action of something , some1 else is benefiting in returnAnd thats ''else'' in return benefit the first

(i pay to buy jeans , because i like them > the company get richer> they hire new desingers> i get more cooler cloths next time >they open new factories)Ecosystem , real money circular system in real life

Again more fallacies on your part, I am not telling people to do anything. I also never said that everyone that grinds gold sells it all on the exchange and I am sure some people do hoard it for various reason. I also never said people in game were stupid. That's still all beside the point.

People sell gold on the exchange because they want gems for w/e reason, you cannot know what that reason is anymore than I can beyond speculating that they need either the gems to buy somethign or if selling gems they need gold to buy something.

The net effect of this exchange is that it allows Anet to sell gems to people that wish to buy gold for w/e reason who then in turn buy gold for w/e reason. That is a fact and it's also fact that anet makes gem sale because of this system.

Period.

Try again
