Asure tech behind something: a overused plot.

Recommended Posts

i replayed LS2-Hot, i just remembered how annoying to have "asura technology" behind it all.

LS2 - Scarlet, basically a asura in a plant body. Ommad Machine. Inquests running in Dry Top. "Taimi discover things".HoT - Rata Novus, a useless dragon lab, thanks god they make it a minor plot but again "Taimi discover things".LS3 - Rata Novus again, Inquest lab in Draconis moons(Rata Arcanum). "Taimi discover things" like ever.POF - Zero to none "asura tech", Taimi radio.LS4 - To compensate lack of asura garbage in POF, LS4 is oversaturated with asura tech in everyplace in everywhere that i even can name it all, even Zinn name cameback. ah then Rata Primus.......Icebrood Saga: its seems the producers realized that asura "science", is boring, tedious, unimpressive, til now in Icebrood Saga its almost reduced to 0, with except of "essences" thing and still the Taimi radio. Even the try to picture it as a joke/satire about scientific nerds are bland, by far the most poor niche of GW2 lore. Icebrood Saga is in right direction, i hope we wont find a "secret lab" again on ice, or "inquests working for Jormag"(!?!) this is too cheap.

Preaching to the choir about the overuse of asura tech.

That said, it'd be unsurprising if there was an Inquest lab near icebrood territory, since that they do have an interest in studying Elder Dragon magic - especially Kuda. I'd also expect Gorrik to play some role. But I would hope it's not a big role and that the Spirits of the Wild have a much larger role than asura magitech.

It only seems that way due to confirmation bias, I think.

The majority of technology in GW2 and Pact efforts have been driven by a Charr-dominated front, and during LS1 & 3, Human tech RE'd from Steam Creatures. Sometimes you'll sees Asura upgrades on them but outside of Taimi "figuring things out all the time" the Asura have very little presence in the story prior to LS4. They were in a few episodes of LS1 & 2 and that was it, and its always Inquest.

Scarlet Briar doesn't count because attributing her success to being "a plant Asura" is entirely incorrect given that the majority of her armies were Charr, Dredge, Sylvari, Krait and multiracial pirates with only limited Inquest assistance, and that the bulk of her invasion forces across Tyria was formed of a Human technology, even if it was based upon her own prior work.

Even her megathumpers were a Charr tech, later used against the Chak Gerent.

Its just that having Taimi always with us makes it seem true. In fact, we solve problems without her more often than not.

The fences that repel risen was asura-made, the devices used at almost every temple to cut-off corruption is also asura based. The Mega-LIT cannon that took out Zhaitan's tail, as well as the "glitter cannons" were also 100% asura tech - based on Kudu's and Goff's research respectively.

Charr supplied tanks, submarines, and choppers, and part of the airship design, but the rest was pretty much all asura.

and during LS1 & 3, Human tech RE'd from Steam Creatures.Which were made by Scarlet, who created them using her knowledge from asura.

But in Season 1, there was also Levvi and Vorpp who were all major (and the go-to solution bringer) in their own subplots (Southsun and Queen's Jubilee). There's also of course Tixx of Wintersday and Tassi of Halloween; and Dragon Bash (both original and remade) have holograms which are based off of asura tech - made by Elli.

Heart of Thorns and Season 3 has Rata Novus playing a huge role - literally giving us the keys to the dues ex machina eureka moment of figuring out Mordremoth's weakness at the last second, as well as the tools to learn that killing Elder Dragons is bad.

It's more than just Taimi. All the "solution NPCs" from the latter personal story until Season 3, and again in Season 4, were always asura. It's just that Taimi was the one at the helm for Season 2, Heart of Thorns, and Season 3 that makes people focus on her being an issue rather than asura in general.

Scarlet Briar doesn't count because attributing her success to being "a plant Asura" is entirely incorrect given that the majority of her armies were Charr, Dredge, Sylvari, Krait and multiracial pirates with only limited Inquest assistance, and that the bulk of her invasion forces across Tyria was formed of a Human technology, even if it was based upon her own prior work.I believe OP is referring to the fact that Scarlet studied under all three asura colleges, and the Inquest, for the majority of her learning life. She also had several asura-like qualities to her personality.

Yes, her armies were effectively the anit-Pact, but Scarlet herself was asura-trained and acted like an asura. The steam creatures (and thus by extention Twisted Watchwork) and her holograms both originate from asura technology.

Even her megathumpers were a Charr tech, later used against the Chak Gerent.Nope. The Energy Probes were based off of dredge tech, enchanted with Flame Legion magic.

In the group of "bad guys of each race", inquest is by far the most present.

Last time we hear about nightmare courtiers was in HoT, sons of svanir(before icebrood saga) in LS2 in the chapter we did party with Eir+Logan and the BitterFrost frontier in LS3, Flame Legion in LS1/Dungeons. Bandits in Siverwastes as "off-history" part of LS2 (we should repel bandit to skritt open the tunnels). LS3 bring bandits as off the main history in Raids. in LS4 we dont have Bandits, Sons of Svanir, Nightmare courtiers or Flame legion, just Inquest.

I'd agree the other races are due for a eureka moment or two (norn in particular and especially given the current story) and that we should focus a little more on the supernatural element (Spirits of The Wild, Jormag) of things and a little less the scientific and technological.

But the asura are the smarties of the races. It shouldn't be an issue that they tend to be the folks that figure things out or map out the process. It's their forte. There's an organic way to do it VS "Can the smart race not be so smart for a min?", because that comes off as equally artificial.

It's supposed to be that charr have the non-magic tech, asura have the magitech, humans have the history, norn have the mysticism/magic, and sylvari have the "new view"/"anti-dragon" magic.

The asura aren't really "the smart race" because all races are smart in their field of knowledge.

But it ends up that human history is all wrong, norn are just drunken brutes, and sylvari are either side-lined for no real reason, or are distrusted enough due to HoT to never use their stuff. Only charr and asura knowledge really gets used in the plots. And more asura than the charr.

Which I've always found to be annoying. Especially the human history part - their thing was that they had the most stable record of history due to their 1,000+ year empires and kingdoms and how asura and norn lost their knowledge when the dragons rose. But all that history just goes "nope, lies and falsehoods" the moment we kill Zhaitan, and instead the history comes from pretty much just dwarves alone.

Asura are overused and overrepresented. Humans from the books and left over tech could have done half of the stuff credited to asura. They were the no. 1 magic users for a long time. Charr could have been used to solve some of the problems, sylvari could have been used for half of the problem.

I am at this point very tired of asura and their Flanderization.

The Inquest aren't wiped out. Joko only took Rata Primus, not the entire Inquest krewe. Which is more or less the equivalent to them losing the Crucible of Eternity - so not the first major loss they survived from. Joko didn't even take out the base in Desert Highlands, despite having direct access to it.
