How do i know when to join WvW?

I have been mostly PvP and pve player till now. So i wanted to give WvW a go, but i am really confused: whenever i join WvW there is no group to join, only few people roaming around. I had luck only once with finding a large group of 30 + players. I can only do some solo content, which i don't like to. I would like to play with groups, not too small, not too large, but i have no idea when is the right time to join one of WvW maps? How do i check that? Also how do you win WvW? I've been playing for about 3 hours, got some useless rewards, 10 silver, 2 Tomes of Knowledge and that is it??? In one PvP match (which usually lasts 10 mins) i get better rewards, if i win lol.Any tips or guides, please? I am completely lost.

Well there is the GW2 wiki page on WvW which would be a good start. Other people "command" raid squads and lead them around either Eternal Battlegrounds, or the three "borderland" maps. You will generally follow the commander around and capture enemy camps/towers/keeps, and fighting other enemy squads doing the same thing. You earn "pips" over time which add to your "reward track" progress and your skirmish chest progress. You will soon find yourself swamped with various rewards, actually. These commanders aren't always around obviously, since it depends on other players stepping up to the mark, but if there's not one on your current map, you can have a look in the other maps.

"When" will depend on your server. Probably afternoon to night for whichever region your server is in. Eternal Battlegrounds (EBG) is the most popular map, so that's your best bet. It's up to players to take initiative to tag up, so there may not always be one. When a tag leaves, the map can quiet down for a bit, and maybe that's the situation you found yourself in when you tried to join before. Usually another person will tag up after awhile though, especially is your'e on EBG.

@Sifu.9745 said:Thx for your replies , guys:)I am on Gandara eu btw.

Edit: looks like it is a bit frustrating playing with melee weapons in WvW when two large groups fight each other, or is it just me?

It's not just you. Welcome to the pirate ship meta. Maybe try your hand at solo/small group roaming.

Can't remember how long it lasted last time we had pirate ship, but I don't expect it to be around for too long.

Fellow Gandaran here. o/

Gandara doesn't have as many regular commanders as some other servers, but there's almost always at least one open tag in the evening, prime time. There might be on in the afternoon or sometimes in the morning, but it depends who's online.

Next time you're in WvW be sure to ask in map or teamchat for the server's TeamSpeak details - you'll be able to see if there's any commanders/squads active, and listening to a commander on TS makes it easier all round. Also, Gandara has a WvW community guild which is another good way to link up with the WvW community and find out if anything's happening. There's no requirements to be fulfilled on your part other than being on the server, so it's definitely worth joining if you want to get into WvW. Again, ask in map or teamchat in WvW and someone will likely be online who is able to invite you.

As for winning/rewards: winning in itself isn't very rewarding in WvW. Matches last one week, and are divided into 2-hour long "skirmishes". Servers earn 5, 4 or 3 skirmish points depending on if they finish 1st, 2nd or 3rd in a skirmish, and whichever server has the most skirmish points at the end of the matchup wins. However, the nature of WvW means that the winner is usually decided by whomever has the most players over the course of a week. As such, it'd be unfair to reward players or penalise players simply because one side has more players online at a given time.

You earn rewards in WvW merely by participating. Completing events - ie capturing objectives, defending objectives, killing enemy players etc. grants you participation, and after every 5 minute "tick" you earn reward track progress based on what level your participation is at. Participation decays over time if you're inactive. There's a little chest icon above your minimap you can hover over to see your current participation level. You can check your current reward track on the 3rd tab of the WvW panel.

There's also a second source of rewards in the form of a skirmish reward track. Provided your participation is at least Tier 3 you earn pips which contribute towards it. You can see the rewards and how many pips you'll earn per tick on the 2nd tab of the WvW panel.

Think of the whole thing as a cross between PvP reward system and the HoT map meta event reward system.
